In Utah, most will complain and tell you they just dont see as many deer as they used to. They will re-minis about the "good ol' days".
We hear the same argument year after year. We hear jests made about the great opening day pumpkin patch. (I honestly think that is a funny way to describe it.)

Why do we need to cut deer tags anymore than we already have? we should less and less hunters make it afield year after year?

In 1988 deer tags peeked at 285,000. hunters that year killed 85,000 deer. that is almost perfectly a 30% success ratio. this year how many general deer tags were sold? 150,000? maybe 100,00? maybe 90,000.... maybe 70,000? Do we really think they need too cut tags again? i think we have complained enough.

I am a fan of micromanagement. I think we need to break down our general deer hunts like we have our LE elk. And yes we do need to cut tags in some areas. In other areas we should keep it around where they currently are with respect to tag numbers. Once units are micromanaged the state would be better able to control the buck to doe ratio than they are able to do with the 5 monster regions we are now messing with. It will take a few years to stabilize and get the information from each area to know exactly how many tags to allocate, but it is possible.

In my opinion the worst thing the state can do is micromanage deer and then allow a hunter to hunt all the hunts if they get a tag. I think you should have to pick your hunt (rifle, muzzleloader or archery) and hunt on micro unit.

I am not alone in this view point. Many states have seen great success with this ideology. Look at Colorado. In the past 10 years every unit has produced a Boone and Crockett buck.

Utah is leaning in the right direction by making changes that need to be made next year.

I would encourage all of us to voice our opinions and make it right by attending RAC meetings in November, that is when they will discuss the changes I believe. I know some people hate the RAC system, but at least they give us a chance to be heard.

I agree with dillon 100%

YAWN!!!! I hunted the entire muzzleoader on the manti. We camp on burnt hill and pretty much covered from Philadelphia Flat to 6 mile. Ya we saw some pretty good bucks, not a lot, but some. Thing I didn't see was the Fish and Game. Funny thing is we did see them in town when we dropped in for gas, twice. These are the guys who we are supposed to micromanage our untis? The same guys who tell us every year there will be about 25% sucess? That there are more bucks this year? That there are no wolves in Utah? REALLY????? So what happens when your unit is micromanaged and lets say it starts producing monster bucks and lots of them. The DWR is going to keep tags low in that unit? The same DWR that is selling tags on Antelope Island to the highest bidder? REALLY????? The same DWR that pleads poverty, yet has nothing but new trucks in there fleets? The same DWR that has there Bucks and Bulls RACS while some of us are still hunting. It takes 4 months to organize the big game draw and draw for tags, but these guys have all there game check and survey info in about a month so they can make rules/regs for the following seasons? These guys, who have done such a bang up job in cultivating deer in utah you now want to micro mangage? If you failed to be productive in your job for 18 years(the big winter kill in 92' until today) would you still have a job? What have the DWR done in mule deer management that makes you think they will do anything more than sale tags and cross fingers? In order to micromanage you would have to have DWR on the mountain, constantly. They would have to be the most knowledgable about the regions deer in order to do a good job. Not in town, not checking urban fisheries, not backing up DUI arrests, in short not doing any of the things they currently do. I don't like Don Peay or SFW, but I would trust them to micromanage ten times over before I trust the DWR in Utah to do it. Hell, the director doesn't even know where he is hunting(cited recently). Pretty much says all you need to know about his leadership, and the organization in general.

Hunt the SE part of the State and then ask do they need to cut tags. HELL YES they do.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

prediction:

1) advocates of micromanagement will get their way.

2) everyone will still think the hunt sucks.

(proof: we've cut tags, increased prices, stopped killing does on the archery hunt, choose your hunt, shortened seasons, 1 to 5 units, moved the muzz out of the rut; has it helped?)

Hunted on the cache, seen one littlebuck. He would have been toast if I could have gotten my daughter a little closer. Seen loads of people, heard about 3 shots. Pathetic. It wasn?t a surprise, I hunted allot of the bow and muzzy in the same area. I spent some time on Nebo. I saw more elk down there than deer. I'm glad I took up archery again at least I get to shoot at something!! (3d) Please bring on the whitetails?. Trade some elk for a few hundred dinky dog deer. Then my Kids will be able to experience hunting. Oh wait I will have a limited entry elk tag sometime in the next 9 years...

I think you are right Smelly. I am a fan of the micromanagement myself. I would like to see the whole state be limited entry because I like big bucks and dont mind waiting. I am a minority(willing to wait for a chance at a big one), and I have kids that want to hunt so I realize that we cant run the whole state like it was the Henrys. My selfish desire to kill big bucks would kill the future of hunting.

Part of me wonders what would happen if just opened the whole state up to OTC with no caps, but you had to stick to one micro unit. The first year or two would be a fiasco, but soon the hunt would not be that big of a deal. People would go out opening day and come home, after all it is just OTC deer, nothing special. People wouldnt take 2 weeks off work for the once every 3 years tag that isnt there anymore. The serious guys would probaly just start hunting on monday. The state could sell more tags, people can hunt all they want every year, the family deer camp can come back again, and we still wont be able to shoot 30 inch bucks from the wheeler.

i agree with hossblur that the DWR has done a pour job with deer. but they dont get paid by the succes rate on mature bucks so why would they change. At the rack one or two years ago for southern region, Anis was excited that the previous years succes rate was 25% and 80% of that 25% was 1.5 to 2.5 year old bucks. Im sorry but that doesnt excite me. The main argument for the youth not being interested in hunting is lack of oppurtunity but, i really belive that its a lack of getting that heart pounding experience when you jump that big mature buck and it and runs over the hill. if thats all you see is spikes and fork horns the excitment wears off after the first couple years. quality is were its at. hope to see everyone at the racs!
