Henry Mountain Management hunt

Just got back from my hunt on the Henry Mountains for a management buck. The stipulations for this hunt are one side must be 3 points or less, not counting the eye guards..

When I drew the permit, and began contemplating what kind of hunt this would be, I decided that I wanted 4 things with my buck and in this order. The first was not a want, but a requirement..lol..
#1 One side had to have only 3 points
#2 I wanted to take a buck with lots of mass.
#3 I wanted a buck with high antlers,
#4 and last but not least, a decent spread..

We arrived on Saturday night, and right as a storm rolled thru..we took a drive and was in rain, hail, and snow, and only seen 7 deer in 3 hours..???.. Sunday our rides turned up a lot of deer so things were looking up.. We made a plan to be where we had seen the most bucks and anticipated the opening morning as we went to bed. We headed our of camp with a 1/2 hour ride ahead of us to get to our planned area. It became light enough to see about 1/2 mile from where we were headed, and I ride right up along side a 26" 3 x 4 and a 29" inch buck my son had seen the night before. Lloyd Jacobsen of the Iverson Bull fame, was also checking out this buck. He asked my son if we were going after him in the morning as he was helping a friend with some tough health issues, and my son told him to go for it and told him "I really don't think we can get my dad to shoot a deer tomorrow".. Anyway I drove away from that buck and Lloyd and his fried with the tag were right up the road. I told them to smoke the buck as we rode by, which they did about 5 minutes later! That made me feel good to know the gentleman had the opportunity to take a great buck.
Seen a lot of deer that day but nothing I would want to pull the trigger on and end my hunt so quick..I took about a mile hike during the middle of the day and my new knee decided it didn't like me much and by the time I got back to the wheeler, I could barely put any weight on it????? Don't know what I did but it pretty well was going to restrict me to spotting and stalking from the roads.
The next morning just at light be find a great buck lying about 75 yards from the road. He was probably 32" wide, a sweet basket shape, and quite high. I could see a great 4 on his right side, but could only see a great split on his lower fork and a bladed tine on the back. He stood and started walking away and I really thought he was my buck. He had everything I wanted, but my son got out my scope and then blew my excitement by telling me not to shoot. I looked thru the scope and the buck had a 2 inch split, not a blade on his back tine...I couldn't quit thinking about that monster buck..We run across 4 smokers that evening that we so fun to see, but so frustrating when you had to just watch them walk away.
Again another day of lots of bucks but again I held my cool, and was very patient. Wednesday morning we took a short hop into an out of the way area, and seem 4 more big bucks that were serious trophys! As we headed up, our neighbor in camp who also had some serious health issues was behind us. We saw a number of management bucks and passed on a good looking 27 inch 3 x 4, went down the road and turned around about a block away, and as we came back, our neighbor dumped that buck as we pulled up..
Today my son and my step brother and his son were going to have to leave in the afternoon so I hoped that today would be the day.. We seen bucks on every ridge as we cut across the road across the side of the mountain. Seen about 15 bucks in the first mile, but only a couple of smaller management bucks and the rest were 4x4's.
We pulled over to glass and I found a small four point in front of us and asked my son if he had seen it. He looked over at a distant ridge and I told him he was looking the wrong way..He suddenly yelled to get my gun as there was a huge buck heading up the ridge and he was sure he was a 3X something. He grabbed the Swarovski and verified he was legal.. We were looking in the direction of the sun and I couldn't see the buck. He finally ran over to where I was and pointed me in the right direction. I finally caught movement and my son told me to take the shot before he topped the ridge. I picked out the buck and touched off, and dust blew up in front of me and I just caught a glimpse of the buck lurching ahead. I told him I thought I missed but he said I had taken out both front shoulders. We watched for about 10 minutes and then headed up the hill to find him..

My Hunting Party!

I couldn't have asked for a better finish to a great week. I held out for what I wanted and finally found an exceptional buck.
This hunt was a lesson in patientence, persistance, frustration (from watching monster bucks just walk away) and yet was very enjoyable and rewarding...
Hope you all enjoy the story and photos!
Rick

I finally met BigMoosie on the hill and had a good visit...I haven't heard whether he took a buck or not!

sweet buck rick! i never had a doubt youd get a smoker!!! thats a whole lot of eyes you had, lol im glad you did since i didnt make it. congrats to all involved

HaHa...all my eyes were very inexperienced except for Jace and without him I would probably have not done as well. He was on the scope immediately for every good buck we saw.
The others were just family who didn't even know much about the Henry Mountains. They came down a few years ago on a buffalo hunt but had no idea what they were looking at...But they learned a lot about deer this week...

Beautiful Buck!
Congrats!

"So... Now you got a little taste of what I do...pretty dang exciting, eh?"

Awesome, that is a great looking buck! Great photos, thanks for sharing.

There is no such thing as a sure thing in trophy mule deer hunting.

Nice Job there antlerrick!

Looks like Nice weather too!

God is Great!

Damn I love my NASCAR race,
And Hell yes I love my Truck!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-05-10 AT 06:06AM (MST)[p]I would say that is a good management buck! You draw way to many tags though.:)

ps. What do you estimate his age at?

Rick, having been on a management hunt before, I can understand the frustrations you went through seeing the huge bucks you can't shoot. That said, you had a great time seeing both country and critters that most hunters only dream about. Congrats on a great buck and hunting experience.

Yelum

Elkoholic, How do you draw "too many tags"? Is that possible?
That is like having "too much fun"...it can't be done...
And I don't see where I have had that many tags? If you count family, we have done well, but then I have had them putting in long enough that they finally have to give them a tag!
I am guessing that buck is 6 or 7 years old. The officer seemed to think it ewas a lot older than the average buck taken down there...
Yelum, if was frustrating, but I didn't let that stand in the way of a great hunt. Seeing those big bucks was really no different than driving around looking at them when scouting.
The Henry's have some of the neatest, roughest and most varied types of habitat around in one unit. You can see why the deer can hide away year after year, and the feed down there is amazing. We were seeing different bucks every day as we hunted thru the same areas. They were in the pre-rut mode with the little bucks rounding up the does, and the big bucks just cruising around. Seen lots of bucks sparring but nothing really getting after it. It would be a treat to be down there next week when the rut was getting into full swing!

Awesome buck Rick !!Management buck ? That is my kinda of management hunt. Where they starting to rut yet?

Awesome buck. I think you met your goals and then some. One thing I learned down there is that 10 power binos are basically worthless. Need to get me some of those 15s! Congrats!

GREAT BUCK!
My hunting buddy's dad shot another great 3x4 down there this year too. I think it has a 30" spread.

Congrats on a great hunt and an excellent management buck.

Zeke

Management Buck? That's a Stud Buck in my book!!

I guess they need to get those "bad" genes out of the gene pool and someone has to do it, lol... looks like a ton of fun!!

Was wondering for S&G's, about how many points does it take to draw a Henry's "management" Vs "any buck" tag??

Congrats Antlerrick!

Joey

Nice job buddy!!!! Looks like you had a great time!! I really wanted to come down....but I was in Palm Springs playing golf....looks like you did well though!!!

Rick,
Congrats on a great looking buck!
Good to hear that it all came together for you!
Thanks for the pics.

Sageadvice...As far as points for the regular rifle versus the management hunt, the max bonus points of 16 will finally move into the next level iin 2011. the management points need 10 for 2011 to guarantee a permit unless permit numbers change and then there is only 8 in that pool versus about 60 in the next level down on the regular rifle...
I knew I would never draw a rifle tag before I died so I took the management tag to be able to have the opportunity to hunt the Henry's... I thought I had 12 points this year but looking at the odds, I either had 11 or 13, but even 10 points got a tag.

Perfect buck to harvest Rick. You met the objective of the hunt plumb center. That's a mighty fine specimen. Mature mule deer are magnificent trophies regardless of their point count. Personally, I'll rather have mature mule deer trophies over any animal in the world.

After reading your post I'm really tempted to load up and head down with the cameras this week. Best I'll ever get to do on the Henrys. Thank heck for at least one place left where we can see mature bucks.

Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations Rick. That's another good time with friends and family!

Barbie doesn't like to deer hunt?????:)

Eel

As a matter of fact Barbie was there but she chose to stay at the wheeler when I shot the deer. I was planning on doing another photo shoot but I decided not to in respect to ktc. It would not be the same without him to enjoy the fun he started.

If you can remember Barbie got her start on a deer hunt. Saddlesore found her in the cliffs in colorado with ktc. She has been on a few more great hunts since that time. I packed her around in my pack all week but just couldn't get myself to pull her out.

Nice job Rick! That is a tremendous buck and to do it with family at your side makes it that much nicer! Hope your knee is okay. Take it easy and have a great day!

Chad

Antlerrick, Thanks! Just was curious. Seems like a guy in your points situation certainly has a great option to hunt for that quality of buck. Seems like a lot of points but then again, that's a lot of buck!

Congrats again!!

Joey

LAST EDITED ON Nov-06-10 AT 12:50PM (MST)[p]Thanks Chad!

Joey, yea I had to burn a lot of points, but I got to experience arguably the greatest mule deer unit in Utah if not in the US.
I would have never been sure I would ever have drawn a regular tag, and with my limited mobility now, I opted to not do the archery thing, although that is what I have tried for the last 5 years.
If you look at harvest statistics, the Henry management hunt has the 2nd highest age class harvested, behind only the Regular Henry hunt, in Utah.
It as definately one of the most enjoyable hunts I have been on and I would do it in a second if and when the opportunity arises again. It is not for everyone as some guys look down there nose at a 3 point, but it is the largest scoring buck I have taken. I have taken a few nice muleys, but nothing like this buck.. I have been an elk fanatic for years, mainly due to the poor deer situtation on our area the last 20 years, and this brought to light the enjoyment and thrill of hunting big muleys again.
The memory of a great hunt and having family with me is now in my mind and that makes it very satisfying...
In visting with Sean, the conservation officer who is stationed on the Henry's, he explained that the theory of taking these bucks out of the gene pool is not the main issue. The biggest reasoning is to create more hunting opportunity for hunters, and to harvest deer that the regular rifle tag holders would never harvest. The "gene thing" is just a minor reason as to why they hunt 3x's. It makes sense as these deer will die of old age and now it creates an opportunity for some fun and exciting hunts!

Rick, Makes a ton of sense to me and i'd say that you done good!! I'm not one to ever turn up my nose at a big three. I have one, not in your class of buck, that sits along side several nice 4X4's and to me, it holds it's own with them. Actually, i have a hard time understanding why some will shoot a small-young 4x4 that isn't going to score well and pass on a mature 3x3. Cracks me up but each his own...

Hey, did you take that buck with your .257 Weatherby? Is that the same gun you were thinking of hunting LE Elk, was it last yr or a couple years ago? Cool looking scope too. Thanks!!

Joey

Joey, that is my .257 weatherby mag, and the scope is a 4.5-14 Burris. The wife bought it for me for my b/d right after I won it. I really like it. I ended up killing my elk with my 300 RUM, but my daughter killed her bull with the .257 this year and it done a number on him. You couldn't believe the damage it done to this deer. I was amazed.

What a stud buck, way too go ricksta!!!

Slam, I was hoping you would make it down and spend some time before you left. Hope your new endeavors work out for you

Rick,
Have you heard anymore from Ron (bigmoosie) yet and is he alone or he got someone with him?

Brian...He stopped by camp Wednesday night when they came off the hill and I haven't heard from him since. He had his friend from California and his wife with him. They said they were seeing a lot of management deer but they hadn't found the one yet..

Way to go dad!
You made an awesome shot on an awesome buck..
I was glad you kept passing on a lot of those other bucks and we kept working at finding a good one..
That was a fun week!
