Well after having success on his first elk hunt my 12 yr old son was pumped for the deer hunt to start. To say he is on his way to being a hunting addict would be a huge understatement. When he passed his hunter safety this past December I told him he would probably only be hunting birds, but went ahead and put him in for a southern general tag without him knowing. When the draw results came out and I showed him the email he just sat there and grinned. It was like Santa had actually delivered in April!
The muzzy hunt finally rolled around and we headed south for three days to mostly just get out in the hills. We spent a couple days on the Boulder and did not see a whole lot, only one shooter buck and a few yearlings. The next weekend was full of fun as Garrett harvested his first big game animal, a cow elk on the Fishlake. Two well placed shots at 300 yards had his confidence high for the coming deer hunt.
Friday rolled around and we headed south. We met my cousin John in town and headed to the cabin. This would also be Johns first hunt for an antlered animal. John is a veteran competive shooter that has just started hunting. He has harvested several does but we were all excited for his chance at a buck. Friday night at the cabin we discussed plans on where to hunt for opening morning. Thanks to a tip my brother Scott had recieved, my Dad (2lumpy) had spotted a group of bucks that night in an area that we sometimes hunt.
The next morning hopes were high as we hiked into the area that the bucks had been spotted the night before. As daylight broke a group of does feed out in front of us and kept our attention for several minutes. A couple hundered yards later the group of bucks from the night before was spotted. The yardage was ranged at 384 yards and Garret and John set up for shots. A couple of shots later two new hunters were wearing giant smiles.
Garrett's 20" 2X3 Actually the bigger body buck of the two they shot.
John's first buck 3X4. Punching all those paper and metal targets paid off!
Scott, Garrett and John all smiles before the drag out...but I think they were all smiling 2 hrs later so it must not have been that bad. Steep hills are sure nice on the way down!
Back at the truck with Grandpa (2lumpy). That's who it all started with 29 yrs ago (my first opener). Thanks Dad!!!
I have always loved the opening weekend meat pole. One of my fondest early hunting memories! Rubber necking to see the bucks hanging in the trees.
A truck load of bucks for the drive home!
There are not enough deer in Utah...FOR REAL.
