Check Stations

I got to thinking the other day about check stations because at the recent RAC meeting they brought up that just as many deer were killed this year with the 3-day hunt than the last couple of years. This is crazy! Not only was the weather awful 2 of the 3 days in the North the deer weren't were they normally hang this time of year. How can they say that the half a dozen deer they check every year at the check stations is a good way to count harvest numbers? I think it'd be a better idea to work something out with meat processing places so that they send in numbers. I know some people cut up there own animals but I think it'd be a much better gauge than a few check stations.

Thoughts?

I think there should be mandatory harvest surveys. With all the online tools out there it wouldn't cost the division much if anything at all. If you don't complete the survey you're not eligible for a the next year.

I agree.. Nevada does this and there deer heard is doing great!

well in nevada you have to return a hunt survey within a set time period after the hunt. If you fail to do so you can't apply the next year or you have to pay a fine (something like $50). Seems like a pretty good system.

Well here in Utah, they dont have there schit together like that. And the check stations are a joke, So many people just drive by or go different ways and dont even pass them.

Mandatory harvest in my opinion is the way to go. Do away with the spot check phone survey and fill it out online.

IDAHO was the same way you had to return info either online or by postcard, don't know if it is still the same or not.

Thats weird I hunted utah LE as a NR and had to do a survey with in a month of the close of the season or I couldn't apply to utah for one year. I got a letter and 2 emails. Nocalhonker

That is the case on limited units. I think we need that kind of data on all tags not just limited tags. That would be the most accurate way to count harvst.

So this has raised an interesting question. I think we can all agree that harvest surveys are needed and beneficial. What would be the best scenario for surveys, large regions or the smaller units proposed by the division? Or do the current phone surveys already break this down? This seems so simple it's amazing they aren't doing it.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-17-10 AT 08:40PM (MST)[p]If it is just harvest information you want, why not make it mandatory to send the tag back (or the un-used portion if tag was filled) at the end of the season. If you dont send it back, you arent eligible to apply for two years. The division could send a self addressed pre-paid envelope with each tag issued. They could send a survey as well for that matter. Then you would have accurate harvest data instead of a sampling, and it would be a whole lot cheaper than paying personnel to do phone surveys....

"So... Now you got a little taste of what I do...pretty dang exciting, eh?"

Check Stations, Ha I spent twenty days during hunting seasons in a LE unit in NE Utah and never saw a warden let alone a check station.

Mandatory harvest report is a good idea... REAL NUMBERS are what I want- not estimates... Internet, Phone, postcard, whatever- let's do it.

As far as surveys- they are practically worthless. It is impossible to control the responses and know if there is any truth to them at all... Surveys will not help. Harvest data can...

+1, +1

no surveys, but mandatory harvest data is agreat idea, and....... no filly outy, no getty taggy next year!

GREAT POST/THREAD

I totally agree with a mandatory harvest survey submitted
within a certain period after the end of the season.
Failure to do so would preclude you from applying next year.
Every bit of info. would help better manage the state's deer
herds.
