After spending 20 days chasing bulls on the Wasatch with my bow I decided that I needed to enjoy some time with my boys in the outdoors. My oldest is 8 and the younger is 3. I had 10 days off work for the opening of the rifle season. I decided that I would take my boys for the first couple days since I had never hunted the area before and they could tag along for some scouting. I figured the opportunity to harvest a mediocre buck with my kids in tow was more important than a trophy animal. After getting to our hunting area on opening evening of the hunt we found a pretty good bull moose and a bull elk. About a half hour before dark while traveling one of the many small side roads we found a buck that allowed us to get out and get within 70 yards. The buck oddly stood there for what seemed like forever as we were in clear sight. My oldest could see the buck clearly and I told him I was going to shoot. I put the buck down cleanly in his tracks. My oldest, who I had never really figured would be the hunting fanatic like me started giving me high fives and yelling ?You smoked him?. The smile on his face in the picture is worth all the money in the world to me. The experience has been the highlight of my hunting career.
