I have a opinion on the buck to doe debate going on right now in MM we have some guys saying it only takes 7 bucks to service 100 does and that it really doesn't matter the age or the quality of buck thats doing this to increase the population or quality of a deer heard.
I disagree with this statement and the reason why is I ask myself why did mother nature (who knows best) set it up that way? A doe will pick the strongest buck not the biggest always but the strongest. And its that way with all heard animals the strongest male is the one that breeds the females now it has to be because thats the way nature intended it to be for the simple reason of survival of that species, and buy having the strongest male breed will increase the health of the heard.
For reference how many people hear would buy cattle, horse, or dog with bad bloodlines or a history of health problems? my guess is not very many.
The best way to prevent lesser animals breeding and passing on poor genetics would be to have more competition between adult males not juveniles and the more quality bucks in an area would force the lesser bucks to expand there range looking for more breed-able does which should spread quality genetics to other herds in that area and should allow for the overall deer heard to have better genetics and should also help with problems due to inbreeding and also decrease the chances of a sick or poor genetic buck finding a mate to pass on his bad genes.
Well you know what they say about opinions but that is mine also i really do not care if the dwr biologist is saying 7 bucks is enough to do the job i think they can be narrow minded and for a lack of a better word lazy on how they approach deer the deer population hear in Utah ya 7 bucks can (get it done) but is it the best way to do it?
