How many bucks? How many years?

I am curious how many years everyone has been hunting Utah's general season deer hunt and how many bucks they have killed.

I have had 22 general season tags and killed 2 bucks on general season, the 1st in 1988 and the 2nd in 1999. I have had plenty of opportunity but have chose not to kill. 9 of those years were spent in the dedicated hunter program which I NEVER killed a buck.

Lets here about you guys/gals.....

17 tags, 15 bucks when I started hunting I used to think it was quite an accomplishment to shoot a deer every year, now I just like to hunt and look for a mature buck.

In the last ten years I have killed two bucks.....passed on tons...missed a couple....I have not killed since joining dedicated (last two years). I can say that I have had chances to kill multiple bucks every year, just not the buck I want to kill....

I have not killed a deer here in Utah for 10 years. I have missed a few nice bucks over the years. The last 9 as a dedicated hunter. I missed a buck this year. Like I said, I have had the opportunity several times and made mistakes on several stocks and so on. I have chose not to shoot LOTS of bucks because I too look for a mature buck. I have seen them, just have not connected or chose not to shoot.

I think Utah needs to close roads down durring the hunts. WAY to many roads everywhere.

I think that I have only killed 3 deer in all my years of deer huntin. I started at 14 (which I think is plenty early) and now I am 33.

I have harvested 8 buck deer in 13 seasons I've hunted in Utah. I've become VERY picky the last 5 years, since I've been in the dedicated hunter program. Only mature bucks for me...

I have had 38 general season tags and 1 limited enty tag for
thousand lake in 1987 it was a bad hunt did not find a buck that
was worth shooting have killed 17 bucks up to 1987 have not killed one since then have pssed up a ton of buck

3 deer 7 tags. All of them where before I turned 18 and the biggest one was a 15 inch 2x3. Haven't killed a deer in the last 4 years because I feel that I have shot enough smaller bucks and I have been unable to connect on a nice buck so far.

I dont know how many tags total over the years, I've spent several years working out of state but, two bucks in the last five years.

I'm not in Utah but I am 15 in Idaho and am 3/3 on deer tags. Not too proud of shootin a small buck and 2 does but I use it to put meat in the freezer.

Though not Utah, I went out to the rafters just to take a quick inventory.
looks like about 67 total.
About 35 years of hunting.
Mostly California bucks where we are allowed 2 per year.

Looks like most TARDS that are willing to CHIME in are PROUD to say We've eaten some TAG SOUP in Our days in hopes of finding a decent Buck to Harvest & have let numorous smaller Bucks WALK in HOPES of someday they'll live to an age they'll become a NICE(Not necessarily B&C!)Buck!

I sure the Hell don't see anything wrong with that!
If it wasn't for people/hunters/sportsmen like these Our Herd would be in even worse shape!

A BIG THANKS to Sportsmen taking management in to their own hands that let PISSCUTTERS walk every year!

Tag Soup really ain't that bad,a little thin, but I think most of us have taken a turn at it!

God is Great!
Life is Good!
And People are Crazy!
I love not acting my age,
Damn I love my NASCAR race,
And Hell yes I love my Truck!

the last 9 years as a dedicated hunter.2 deer.the dedicated hunter is utahs best management tool. and now they want to get rid of it......

Ive killed 1 buck in 7 years in Wyoming. And Ive never killed a deer in Utah, Had tags, even had a book cliff tag the first year they opened it up after being closed. I wish Utahans would be so picky when they come here, the deer in areas G and H have a hard time getting mature. To be honest, I hope they do get rid of the dedicated hunter program, it would open up more opportunity and help with quality for regular folks and young people.

+1 bbop, i guess i'm not familiar with the dedicated hunter program but it sounds like a good one, this maybe a dumb question but what is it about?

12 Utah general season tags, 4 bucks (two decent four-points, two small two-points). Passed on several smaller bucks in recent years.

I have had 21 general season tags..13 years in the dedicated hunter program I hunt all three seasons in these last 13 years have gotten 10 deer in them 21 years..8 have been mature 4 points two have been 3 points...I have always been picky...I am curious what caliber of bucks are people passing up? I personally think 160 plus is a good deer for general season Utah...

Ive had 18 tags in Utah. Harvested only 4 deer. Two were L.E. and 2 were General season. Best hunt ever was this year. Didn't see many bucks or harvest but had my 3 year old son along side me. That kid is awesome!

Im 27 so hunting for 14 years if i did the math right.
4 archery (two 2 points and two 4 points, 26 wide and 30 wide)
2 muzzy bucks(one spike and one 2 point)still want a trophy with muzzy.
1 rifle(5x4, 24 wide)

extras
1 moose and 1 speed goat. both with rifle!

29 tags and 5 bucks killed

2 with a bow
3 with a rifle

I can't remember the last year I killed a general season buck in Utah. It had to have been more than 10 years ago.

Many opportunities at good bucks early on. A big reduction in not only good buck sightings later on, but any buck sightings!

It's always an adventure!!!

I'm 45 so I guess that would mean 29 G.S. permits.
Pre 1994 with a rifle I took a buck every year but one. Since I've
been a feather flipper I believe I've taken 7. None in the last 6 years. So I guess I would be ABOUT 18 for 29.

Wiley,
I am nominating that for post of the
century on Monster Muleys!

Your are spot on.

18 general buck tags
6 filled

I killed 1 spike my first 10 years of hunting.

I killed the other 5 in the past 10 years, all 2's & 3's. Better deer typcally found but I suck and I never connect.

I'm sure that since "G" is a General tag for Wyoming residents, they are letting the small ones walk lol....

I shot my last buck in Utah in 2001. It was a 4X3 on the General season. I have no desire to shoot small bucks.

Since 1994 I have harvested 2 bucks and lost a smaller one (bad choice on my part for shooting).

Figgured I'd better clarify before I get called on(again!)

2/3 of my antlers in my rafters are California blacktails, limit 2 per year in my zone.
Rest are muleys & a couple whities.
Haven't missed an out of state hunt since 1984.
Eaten several high dollar tags as well.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-27-10 AT 05:00PM (MST)[p]woodruffhunter- I note how a lot of nonresidents take younger bucks at the last of their hunts when going out of state, (I did that in Nevada this year) its an expensive tag and hunt, and going without is harder because of that. I blame WGF mostly, they give way too many tags for nonresidents, and then general tags for the residents, that puts a lot of bucks out of business before they get a chance to mature.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-27-10 AT 06:44PM (MST)[p]It's nice to see the interest in this topic. I am a little surprised that a few of you are not commenting on this. You know who you guys are. C'mon lets here how many tags and how many bucks?

Jim, I admit I do not see as many deer or bucks, But I still see as many good bucks where I hunt. I just am waiting for a slammer to make a mistake, but if I didn't have a tag I would not be able to pass smaller bucks the last 11 years.

Not sure how many tags (there were a few years I didn't hunt), but started at age 16, now 35; 4 deer.
2 rifle, 1 Muzzy, 1 bow.

I've missed more than my share, too. I get the more selective the older I get.

Good question Tony I've never thought about it. 20 plus years of hunting Ut, and est deer killed is 12.

Hunted 17 years 7 deer harvested

5 with riffle
My 1st deer was a 2 point about 16"
1 3X3 18"
1 2X3 21"
1 small 2X3 meat deer for my brother in-law that was hurting for money.
1-limited entry 27" 4 point (book cliffs 08)

2 4X4 1-18" 1-20" both with muzzle loader

12 years in the dedicated hunter.

6 archery
1 muzzy
11 rifle

Tony,
How many bucks have you shot out of state? How many in micro managed unit states?

There are not enough deer in Utah...FOR REAL.

In about 2003 or 2004 I Killed a buck in unit 10 Colorado that was a 27" 3x4. Bought the tag for %3,500. Biggest waste of money I have ever spent on a hunt other then my 6 year old daughter was with me to enjoy it. Right or wrong that is the reason I shot the deer. It was the last day and she wanted me to shoot one.

Have had 2 other tags that I bought for Colorado, the unit right outside of Grand Junction and have not killed a deer either time there. Burned those tags. I think it was the unit 41, 421 area. Bought both of those tags for about $1,500 if I remember right.

Shot a buck in region Y in wyoming on private land in 2006 with the R&K hunting company. Nice buck and a great experience with my 12 year old son. He killed one as well on that trip on his 12th Birthday. Story was in Muley Crazy.

Had a Nevada 101-108 permit in about 2001 and did not shoot a buck, I drew that tag. It was a Muzzle Loader tag.

Bought a Mexico tag for Sonora last year and killed a nice 180" with my son and had the same tag in 2007 and killed a nice 190" buck. MIght go back there in January (there was a big slammer 210" type buck I missed last year and no one else killed it.

I have max points in Wyoming for deer
I have 10 points in Oregon for deer
I have max points in Arizona for deer
I have 9 points in Nevada for deer
I have 8 points in Colorado for deer

I think that about covers it.

Well if I figure right, 44 tags and estimate maybe 20 bucks killed. Switched to strictly archery in 1999 and havn't even taken a shot at a deer since then.

If people are not killing deer, why do you want to limit thier oportunity to hunt?

Seems to me if you feel the need to punish someone for shooting a deer, make people turn their tags back before they can get one the following year. Tag out, sit out.

I've killed two bucks in 89 and 92 with a bow and one little 4x4 in 84 with a rifle. Been concentrating on elk with my bow pretty much since which I sucked at too. Next year I'll be hunting the Henry's with my bow on my Zero point tag. First time I've had the oportunity to put in for deer in a long long time :)

Cheers,
Pete

Many a buck has filled the freezer to please a youngster along for the hunt. I think it is just about always a valid reason. Kids need to see success not just riding about looking!

I like the if you fill a tag you set out a year idea! Give an exception to hunters 18 and younger.

There are not enough deer in Utah...FOR REAL.

Geez Tony! Now all the pieces are starting to come together. No wonder you're after the elk, look at all the deer points you have!!!! I don't hold out long enough to get that many points. I usually can't get past 2 or 3 before I cash in. And that my friend is the beauty of smaller units and micromanaged hunting areas. You can actually do that. Guys like you can hold out for the whopper tag and guys like me that just want a chance at a decent buck can cash out early and hunt.

by the way, just razzin ya about the elk thing!:D

It's always an adventure!!!

Like it or not, my family started me out at a very young age on our Calif. cattle ranch and i didn't/couldn't hold back when Grandpa or Dad told me to, "go ahead an shoot that buck", that they'd tag it. By the time i was 16-17, i had a good many bucks killed and it had grown into a obsession of only shooting the bigger or biggest bucks.

Near as i can figure i've had over 85 California tags and 22 out of state tags from 6 different states. Counting everything including those taken as a kid, pretty close to 100 buck deer taken.

Utah= 21 tags 1 Buck Harvested, 1 Buck missed
I have had a tag every year since the age of 16!

Idaho= 11 tags 4 Bucks harvested 2 missed
First tag at 14 yrs old 7yrs strait in the
late 80s till 94, I took 3 years off then hunted
started again in 98 till 2001 3 of the 4 bucks
were killed in the first 7 yrs.

Colorado= 4 tags 05 07 08 09, 1 buck harvested
I was able to be alot more picky in Colorado.

Total= 36 tags 6 harvests 3 misses all bucks 4 point
or better.

I'm 43 and I've had 24 Utah general tags and 1 Limited Entry Archery Tag. I took 3 deer the first 3 years I could hunt starting out when I was 16 through 18 when I had an itchy trigger finger.

I've gone completely archery for the past 20 years and have only taken one buck and the only reason I took it was because it was the biggest two point I'd ever seen in my life and it was a stag to boot. I have a soft spot for weird-looking bucks. A lot of my effort has been spent archery elk hunting in the open bull areas where I've taken several rag horns. After that ends, I usually spend my time on the Wasatch Front in search of a monster muley.

I've gone through the hunting phases and am more of well, just a hunter. I'd rather have an opportunity to hunt and keep passing up bucks waiting for a true giant or a weird-looking buck rather than having to sit out of the game.

One of my 6 children has been hunting for a couple of years now and I have encouraged him to take whatever deer that makes his heart jump. He arrowed a 140-class 4x4 last year just a few days before his 14th birthday and I couldn't be a prouder father. I'm hoping to get my twin 11-year old girls through Hunter's Safety so they get a chance next year.

Good luck to everyone!

I have been hunting for 25 years and have killed 9 deer. I have been in the DH program for the last 10 years and have only killed 3 in that time period.

Never hunted Utah, but I figured I'd throw my numbers out there

At 12 years old, I had my first deer tag in California. It wasn't until I was 17 in 2000 when I took my first buck. I have turned into a horn hunter the last five year and would rather eat my tag than shoot a young deer.

17 deer total
-12 bucks
-5 blacktail(one bow kill)
-2 muleys
-5 whitetail
-5 w/t doe(3 bow kills)

I guess I need to take better notes as time goes on.

I live in CA. and didn't tag a deer this year and I cashed in all my CA. points on an X zone hunt. Before that, I always hunted a D zone. In approx. 18 years of hunting that D zone, I have taken 3 deer.

I have taken 4 deer in various Utah general hunts, I think the total of those hunts is 8 or 7. 3-2 pts and 1-3 pt.

I hunted CO. a total of three times in what is now a very bad deer unit of CO. 2 bucks, almost identicle 3x4's. I personally think that bad unit in CO. is a better use of ones time for a decent buck than all the general units in Utah. But, at this point, it is not about killing as much as going hunting. The other trip to CO. I missed a nice mule deer.

Hope that Utah is able to make some small adjustments as we go.

I think this post shows much about the issue regarding Utah deer.
