I need to apologize.

Obviously we are all passionate about what we believe in and for that I am grateful.

As with anything there is always many ways to get to a destination. Some are quicker then others but harder, and others seem to be simpler but take much longer. It does not make any of them more right or wrong.

It is comforting to know that we at least can still voice our opinions in public and not be beaten, fined, jailed or shot for it.

Regardless of today's or any other meetings outcome we all still want to fix our deer herds.

So my apology goes out not because I disagree with you but because I called names or took personal shots at some of you.

That was unprofessional and definitely not warranted by me.

This system is not perfect and the way to restore a healthy deer herd is not exact.

I simply have some resources I am trying to utilize to fix a problem we all face (declining deer herd) and if I am guilty of something it is guilty for wanting my kids to have the opportunity to hunt. So yes, I am selfish in that way.

Whatever passes today in the board meeting has no impact really on MY ability to hunt but it does on thousands of others and my kids.

I sat through the information meeting yesterday and herd 2 things over and over and over by the entire wildlife board, every DWr employee that made a presentation and by the DWR director himself.

The common thing they all said is 1, we need more deer and 2 we need more money to get more deer.

So that my fellow MM members leads me to this. How is the DWR going to get more money when we are in the worst financial crises in my lifetime? Why would the Legislature give more money to the DWR when they themselves are suggesting to cut there budget by up words of 1 million dollars when biologically it is not needed?

Are all of us ready to make up the million? Do you even trust that if you gave the DWR a million they would spend it wisely?

Most of you on here don't even believe in their counts or study's or polls so why would you trust them with raising your license fee?

These are real questions I would like answered.

I will be at the meeting all day today and would hope any of you that can make it would. You wont hear me harping on elk or pushing my agenda today. Those battles I will fight in a different format.

Today you will hear 1 man representing himself and his kids asking the board not to shut out the future generations.

Thanks Tony. I hope they choose the right option. I am against any tag cuts. I dont think any of the options will grow more deer. We need does, not bucks. Bucks will be the outcome of more does. "If you build it, THEY will come."

I, too, dont want them taking away opportunity away from my kids. I have 3 boys that worship me and want to go hunting with me and pray for me eveytime I go hunting to kill something, but I cant wait till they get to come with me or I get to go with them. My oldest is 6 and I hope the current trend of cutting tags stops soon because they may never get a tag. Who knows! We do bring the tailer and all go out on a few hunts and do have a blast.

Lets hope for the best.

Honestly- you shared some things that are obvious concerns to most of us, in particular myself. Herd numbers, tags, future of hunting.
It concerns me that those in charge of our wildlife believe that money is the answer. The one plus side to that is there will probably always be a lot of tags available as that is the greatest source of money. If money was the way to larger, better deer herds- I know we would all be willing to chip in our share. But I don't think the rest of us believe that money is the way out of this. If the DWR wants to explain what the money would be used for- and how that would benefit the herd- we might get on board. Unfortunately that doesn't happen...
Are the days of hunting in my home state every year over...? Do I need to plan on unting out of state and spending a lot more money to provide the same expereince to my children..? I have but a 7 month old daughter right now. I'm young. I have a lot of time ahead of me. I don't think hunting will be the same as when I was growing up. But I want to share it with my children. I'm in a Master's program to try and better my life financially so that someday I can really have time (and money) to do the things I love.

I want to thank all those MM members who do have time and resources to make a difference now. Even if I don't always agree- I know you are generally fighting for the same interestes that I am. I hope to make it to the meeting today...

Thanks Fishon,
You know with all the back and forth i've read on here the last 6 weeks, I don't know which option you hope they vote for today.
I assume you are in favor of option 3? Because that is the only option as described by DWR as not having tag cuts?
And all of you folks who don't want tag cuts, you are all in favor of Option 3 also?

Tony,

You and I have agreed and disagreed on many things over the years. We happen to see close to eye to eye on this one. It doesn't matter though, I have gained a lot more respect for you over the past month after having spoken to you about this stuff. I've gained respected not because of your position on the issue, but because I can see that you really care a lot about the future of mule deer in Utah and you're trying to do something about it. You've stoked my fire a bit.

Like so many others, I wonder sometimes if the people running the show have any clue what they're doing and/or even care what us little guys think. I had lost interest in even worrying at all what direction it all went. I gave up my SFW board position because I didn't believe that even being in that position would do any good. I still believe most decisions are being made by a select few, but you Tony, have stoked my fire to want and get things headed in the right direction.

Regardless of what is decided today at that board meeting, more still needs to be done. Us little guys need to demand more. We can't let them make any of these changes, or even remain status quo, and call it a long term plan without more changes happening.

Tony you are no different than a lot of the poster here. You are passionate in your belief, feelings and desires, as are many others.

We who really care about our mule deer herd have one thing in common, and that is the hope and desire to see it turn the corner and hopefully improve, both in number of animals and quality of its bucks.

We all enter this court from different directions and with different ideas and thus its obvious there is bound to be many conflicts and disparity with our opinions. But in the long run, it behooves all of us to treat each other with respect and understanding. We don't have to agree with each other and we all should be encouraged to express our concerns and recommendations. But by days end, even with all our difference we still should be able to remain friends, as the real truth lies somewhere between all of our beliefs.

I too am very concerned about Utah?s deer herd. I have three children and grand kids who I hope will find the same enjoyment from wildlife, and specifically mule deer that enhanced my life. I personally think we can't continue to give 96,000 permits each year. As stated in other posts I would LOVE to see them cut tags in half and double the permit fee until the time comes they really get this thing figured out.

It is obvious to all, that you, I, SFW, MDF, and Division really does not have a real solution on how to fix this thing, or what will be required to get it done, or otherwise we would not be at this point. I would have liked to seen far more done (restrictions) than any of the measures that will be taken. And the reason I would like to have seen that done is for my grandkids and hunting?s future.

So we all have a different point of view, but let none of us, except the foolish, feel we can't be friends. And it's always best to treat friends fairly and with respect. If we learn to do that and to give and take, the sooner we can correct this problem.

Insults and name calling hurt our cause and beliefs, whereas a good handshake and friendly smile will take us and our ideas much farther.

Hopefully we can some how get this mule deer thing figured out.

Have a good one. BB

We need more MONEY??? We have a convention coming up in a couple of months where ZERO of the funds generated by OUR tags goes to wildlife! Why the hell would the dwr agree to this? Take the $ earned from the convention and start putting it on the ground! Do the math theres $ to be made!

Passion is just one of our emotions and the line is thin between passion, anger and frustration.

We are all passionate about hunting! We would'nt spend the time and money to be involved if we were not.

Most of us overlook being called a name every once-in-a-while because we understand passionate people.

Tony, you can call me all the names in the world (you havn't yet) and I will be unaffected because I know you are passionate about having things better for EVERYONE. Keep up the voice bro!

Best regards, Zeke

LAST EDITED ON Dec-02-10 AT 11:49AM (MST)[p]I do not know the answer to helping the Mule deer herd. But I guess there may be more than one answer to the question.
Maybe some of us ( the little guys in the world) need to see the problem and do what we can.
Like not shoot a deer every year for the sake of just shooting a deer. I have hunted every year for deer and could have shot a deer every year. But have not. I have hunted though and have enjoyed hunting even though I have not killed a deer. Maybe we need to start policeing our self and let the government do there best with our help.
Just a thought !
Thanks for your help Tony .Lets keep doing what we can and not give up the fight.

Tony,

I was there today when you gave your advice to the board and I thought you did a great job. I personally was for option 2 and a unit by unit archery hunt. I just felt like the board was more for helping the herd than the hunters for once. And money did not seem to be much of an issue. I do agree that the motion seemed to be written last week and not at the meeting, and that the board got stumped when they tried to amend things that were not passed.

I am trying to look into the future, but I can't see what is at the bottom of the hill from my seat on my sled!

Time will tell what will happen to our herds.
