Utah's Wildlife Board Decision.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-02-10 AT 12:57PM (MST)[p]Tony, I too found it interesting that the motion was pre-written. Thanks for all that you do and will continue to do for Utah and our deer herd.

Tastes good doesnt it! Man i'm glad the board actually cares about deer and not themselves!

I am not going to say I am surprised.....and I am not going to pretend that I am not happy about this! :)

I also am not going to pretend to enjoy watching the bowhunters cry like CRAZY.....not that it mattered to me AT ALL and I did nto have an opinion on the Statewide...but wow...this is going to be fun to watch. Everyone thought that there were too many Utah threads....watch out now...it is going to go CRAZY! haha

Next Step:

Combine limited entry and general unit application and point systems. Choose your poison, hunt often, or hunt trophy unit.

Now that the entire state will be essentially limited entry, does this mean that SFW and the other conservation organizations will take up to 5% of all tags statewide?

This is but one step in the right direction.
Now Fishon and everyone else can get on with doing all they think needs doing to help grow more deer.
habitat improvements predators etc.
This doesn't stop you. now lets get on with it.

What will elimination of statewide archery do to the extended Wasatch deer hunt? It might become an even better hunt in the future.

Right on, as I heard them say all of the current projects of habitat, predator control and other management was already going on in units, so this will just be another added step in helping in controlling hunter pressure in smaller areas. Lets keep working hard on all of these areas and help our deer herd make a come back

Did anyone else get the impression that the Wildlife Board has NO clue what they are doing procedurally or substantively? The pre-written motion changing the option 2 language, not knowing how to amend motions, etc. etc.

Option 2
Unit-based management, hunting in 29 units

This option would require the DWR to manage each of the state's general-season deer units for a minimum of 18 bucks per 100 does. It would also require a switch to unit-based hunting. There would be 29 general-season hunting units. As part of this option, the DWR would:

Maintain its unit-based approach to deer management.
Likely require all hunters to hunt on individual units.
Decrease the number of permits for a unit if it averaged fewer than 18 bucks per 100 does. Permits would not be restored until the unit returned to at least 18 bucks per 100 does.
Modify the Dedicated Hunter Program into a one-year program.
Wait until 2012 to implement these changes.

Advantages-

Allows the DWR to more precisely manage general-season units
Allows the DWR to more evenly distribute hunting pressure
Ensures that all units will eventually have at least 18 bucks per 100 does
Improves harvest-data collection

Disadvantages-

Limits a hunter to one general-season unit
Makes it more difficult to draw a permit for some units (reduces the likelihood of hunting every year)
Makes it harder to hunt as a family or group
Requires Dedicated Hunters to draw a unit, and changes the program into a one-year program
Poses law-enforcement challenges (more boundaries to enforce and patrol)
May result in the loss of approximately 13,000 permits
Will likely require an increase in deer permit fees

Hey CUPSY???

You're not even gonna give anybody a piece of Mind?

Its not my favorite option but it is done now and over. I can accept change! Now if we are going move to fix deer herds, why not implemt MANDITORY HARVEST SURVEYS????!!!!!???? The division doesn't require it on all L.E. and O.I.l. units cause it doesn't work or its not valuable info! They do it because it is important to know what is going on, on that unit and as a state.
All they would have to do is make a very short survey like they already have. Make it the same if you don't fill it out weather you killed or not you are not eligable to apply the following year!
Just my 2 cents! You can never have too much knoladge/info DWR thats why people seek higher education!

Ya, I hope they don't just call this the end. More needs to be done. I hope they don't cut those tags and then turn around and have a 9 day hunt again. But, I believe the real powers see Utah elk and the Henry Mtns. unit as successes because those are the hunts that put Utah on the hunting map. But, that "success" comes at a serious cost, and that is most hunters are forced to watch from the sidelines. I believe those who control things see dollar signs when they think about big bucks in Utah. Utah elk generate boatloads of money in the form of conservation tags. I fear that the longterm goal of those who really have the weight to throw around is to see our deer hunting managed like our elk hunting.

Also, I'm betting that once our general units begin producing quality bucks, there will definitely be conservation tags issued for those hunts too. That's how they'll ultimately pay for the tag reductions.

Does anyone know how they'll treat lifetime license holders? Right now, we get a tag for whatever unit we want. I expect that will continue.....???? I know there aren't many of us out here, but does anyone know what they'll do with that?

Ill be the first archer to pipe in. A good decision????? Mabey
29 units sounds ok.... question whose going to police those? (other than the public)My only problem...THEY VOTED AGAINST 80% OF THE STATE.
THE CHAIRMAN CAN KISS MY YOU KNOW WHAT!!!!!
Ok im done now.

Shoot em till their dead

Not to beat manditory reporting to death, but they also require dedicated hunters to keep track of harvests. I for one have got a dedicated hunter survey every year i was in the program.
Also this would negate all those annoying survey callers who have no idea about the questions they are asking calling my house. And just maybe save the DWR some money on glorified tellimarketers. I dunno maybe they are volunteers or interns or maybe they are paid.
Either way it makes sense to me to get it directly from all sportsman and not from a third party.

I hate to say this but after attending a couple of Wildlife Board Meetings in the last year, Keele Johnson drives me nuts. Is he the best representative we can find in the SE region?

I'm personaly glad he's in there. He made alot of sense and could tell he's passionate about the health of the deer herd.

Just because he choked up and nearly shed tears when discussing his experiences with mule deer as a boy does not mean that he makes rational, well-reasoned decisions that are best for the mule deer herds. I guess I just have a personal gripe with his views.

I wonder if Keele Johnson was emotional when he beat his wife. I heard rumors we wont need to put up with Keele Johnson much longer because I heard that Keele Johnson is leaving the board in January.

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/603453/Blanding-lawmaker-wont-give-up-House-seat.html

Rep. Keele Johnson, R-Blanding, says he won't resign his southeastern Utah House seat after his marital problems have become public, but he may not run for re-election in 1998.

Johnson, R-Blanding, and his wife of more than 20 years, Lynnette, were involved in a domestic abuse situation last March. As reported in the Salt Lake Tribune, Lynnette Johnson filed a complaint against Keele Johnson with the Blanding City Police and sought a protective order from a local judge. Lynnette Johnson said her husband struck her, Keele Johnson told the newspaper that he pushed his wife and she accidently struck her head.

How does someone get voted in or appointed to the board? Does the governor appoint the position? Is there a vote?

I am a bowhunter. I want to do whats best for the deer not necessarily the antler.

My MAIN PROBLEM was when they admitted that 4 out of 5 RACS voted against taking away statewide archery and within a matter of seconds 6 guys that do not bowhunt voted against the public opinion.

Thats a joke.

Yeah that is a good point. I understand option 2 passing since it won out at the RAC meetings but I am suprised they got rid of state wide archery-If anyone knows how this will effect the extended archery I would love to know.

+1 on the mandatory reporting! This may not be the best option for the herd, but it's a step in the right direction. I think the reporting would help out alot!!!

They already have mandatory reporting set up for all the LE hunts, so how hard could it be to include the general hunts?
I think that would be the most accurate input as far as harvest you could get.
The gals who call and ask all the questions have no idea what a "harvest" is. I think they assume they are asking about your garden. Some of them are really on top of things!

Congrats to those option 2 proponents.

I have nothing to do with this guy or even know who he is....but why would you post something from 1997?!?!?! Did you even look at the date that this article was printed??

I am an archery hunter and I'm happy to see that they are ending the statewide archery tags. Sure it will limit the amount of area that I have to hunt and I won't be able to pick up and go chase a ghost anywhere in the state, but it will be a true start to helping to manage the deer. I think the next step in this is to have the dedicated hunters pick the weapon that they want to hunt with for that year. I know that the bow hunters will still stick to bow hunting, hard core muzzleloader guys will stick with their passion, and rifle hunters would stick to their trade. I'm tired of seeing guys stroll into the archery shop a day before season opens and gets a dozen arrows for the hunt when they haven't practiced their craft. These guys have no idea how much practice it takes to make sure you make a good humane kill and do it right. I know of several people who wound several deer a year during the archery hunt and then get out with their trusty rifle and get it done. These guys are doing some damage to our deer herd as well and it should be addressed next.

I was waiting for someone to post the date. It still happened regardless of the time.

Elite, this shows the kind of person you are.U a politicion? You sure dug up dirt in a hurry against someone that shared a different view than your own. What does his personal life have to do with anything that took place today.

Real stand up.

I think it does, He made some bad choices back then and he continues to make bad choices today. This shows a history of bad choices! lmao!!

Brutus, hahaha, this was old news. I was just saying that maybe his emotions from his boyhood was the same that he used when he beat his wife.

I went to the meeting until 12:30 and then I had to book it back to Logan to take a test (which I got close to 100% on). I have been in favor of option 2 from the beginning. So I am happy that they voted in that direction. As far as archery I think it going to a unit basis is going to be a hard thing for some people. I just hunted the extended hunt for the first time, and I loved every moment in the snow up to my knees and 4 degrees. I hope they do something that allows for an extended hunt even if that is the only place you get to hunt.

Someone asked what they are going to do with the Lifetime license holders. I understand that they will still get first dibs on tags at least in the beginning. Then if they stay spread out like stats show that they have been, it should not be a big problem. If all the Lifetime hunters go to the same four or five units every year we will have to solve that problem then.

There are still a lot of questions to get answered, and they won't all happen at once.

I think everything will be better in a few years(5-10), but I may be wrong.

Until then I suggest you all pull out your predator gun and go whack a coyote or two, it is a group effort to control them.

Dillon

why dont you clean your own closet before you start cleaning somebody elses. I dont know Mr. Johnson personaly but im sure we've all done things that we regret but dont be that guy that has to drag everyone elses dirty laundry out. It'll come around and i'm sure your not perfect contrary to your beliefs.

Well Johnson is old news because he is gone from the Wildlife Board. I just hope his replacement has a few brains which most Wildlife Boards members are lacking. Ernie Perkins is the only smart one.
