Vernon Deer

I was hoping to go out to the Vernon Unit to do my own classification/counts using the same route as the Biologist to see what I can come up with. I called the Biologist and asked him what routes he used to do the classifications. He blew me off and said "I don't give out that information so the deer do not get poached". You have got to kidding me!!!....really? I can understand there may be a poaching problem, but this is should be public information. I will probably write a letter....

Anyway, Would anyone be willing to PM me that may know about where the DWR does their classification counts? I was headed out there in the morning.

Don't know about routes, but I don't thiknk you'll find many deer. Most move off the unit to winter. At least on the North end.

I figured they headed towards the desert, but I just want to know where they do their classifications for that unit herd. I think they normally do it in November and 1st part of December on the winter range.

Anis Aude said they don't do even do field counts anymore so I'm not sure how you could come up with the same numbers they do. It's all based on computer generated models anyway using the W.A.G. theory.

It's always an adventure!!!

I'll just drive out, count four bucks and ten does, and leave. Then I will get on my computer. I know there must be 40 bucks per 100 does and for every square mile there should be 200 deer. Then I'll figure 200 square miles are in the unit and times that by 200 deer. Wallah, 40,000 deer! and 16,000 bucks!

I'll take the square root of 30 divided by 26 multiplied by the inverse of 1/3 watch a little roughin' it outdoors and wallah! We can give out 8,000 tags!

The W.A.G model is always right!

To be fair, I did go out with a biologist last year for a couple hours to do classifications. He was very careful to make sure we had good sample sizes and didn't count them twice, when he wasn't sure, when there was only 1-2 deer in the group, or when the cover was to thick to see the entire herd. We actually classified 106 deer. If I remember right 40 were fawns and 16 were bucks. He told me he does this 4-5 times during November/December until he has a good sample size of 400+ deer from different parts of the unit. I still don't understand how they can really figure out the total herd size on the unit from this information?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-10 AT 09:32PM (MST)[p]He is the Bio over the Pahvant unit. He did say he usually counted more on the route we were on. This was post hunt 2009.

Please find out how many 100's of Deer the DWR thinks there are on the Pahvant?

Couple of Nice Bucks down there but total Deer numbers are like everywhere else in Utah,a f'n JOKE!

I got something the Utah DWR can W.A.G !!!

The 2009 annual report does state that deer are counted from the ground and done immediately following the hunt.

That biologist is a total duche bag i talked to him when i drew the vernon and he is definately the biggest retard ive ever talked to he couldnt tell me anything i didnt know.
Those deer usually high tell out of there after the hunts.
