LUCKY EXPO DRAWS

Guys the lucky draw post from earlier has been left with some great, promising stories of either hunters or their buddies that have been to say the least- real lucky.

Now I know that some people feel negatively about the expo tags and if the money earned does not go to help out the wildlife here in Utah, as some have said, then I'm not a fan either. That being said I have put down some dough the last couple of years with no results. But what about the people that drew a coveted tag? Any cool stories? I heard about a guy that drew a Pauns deer tag and he got a killer buck. Others?

The expo tag money is not going back on the ground for wildlife. It is going for overhead and such.

Now when the tags were given to the expo it was agreed that a "SIGNIFICANT" amount of that money would go on the ground for wildlife and that the expo draw odds would be available to the public shortly after the expo.

I know this for a fact because I was one of the guys that made the deal representing MDf, Don Peay made the same deal representing SFW and Ray Lee made the same deal representing FNAWS.

Now all of you expo tag lovers out there, Where are the fruits of the expo tags which generate roughly $1,000,000 a year and where are the draw odds that were promised?

You are not getting either. You should all demand you get these 2 questions answered immediately.

I did not attend the Expo last year and I don't plan on attending this year.

There are no good expo tag stories because the EXPO tags are not being used for what they were intended to be used for. Now they are lining pockets and paying overhead.

Those 200 tags were ripped from the public and now you are getting nothing out of them and unless you drive to the expo you can't even apply for them.

When will you guys put your foot down and say enough is enough?

I have an idea on how to handle this. It should be interesting.

I think you might have missed the point of this post. IMHO

There are not enough deer in Utah...FOR REAL.

No I didn't miss the point. It ask for good expo tag stories. I simply gave the story as to why I did not think there is a good expo story.

The expo tag draw odds are on the website... Not sure what your talking about on that aspect?

Also... I don't mind it, It allows you to put in for the limited entry hunts twice in one year, basically doubles my odds to draw that coveted elk or deer tag... Plus its a good time

The draw odds WERE NOT posted until this year. That is what Tony is talking about. SFW and cohorts only published the draw odds this year after they got too much crap about it. There was no reason they couldn't have posted the draw odds in previous years, and they know it. Especially if it is as Tony says that they agreed to it in the first place.

Sorry guys, I thought the poster was looking for stories about sportmens exciting stories about their hunts. Maybe I misunderstood the intent of the post.

As for as opportunity. I think the Expo tags give me more than the state draw does. I can only put in for two species and one chance at each in all reality. The Expo gives my kids and wife and self a chance to draw a tag for every species in the state. Plus multiple chances. I think it gives me more chance than if you throw those tags back in the general draw. Plus my kids just love going down and enjoying the mounts and seeing some of Outdoor Channel heros! Believe me I don't want to see all the tags go to this system but I am ok with what they are doing now.

I think the sled took off 25 years ago! Time to get control of that baby!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-15-10 AT 04:28PM (MST)[p]I drew a bull moose tag at this year's expo. When the results were posted, my dad called to tell me the good news. We talked for 10 minutes and I still didn't believe him. I had to look it up for myself.

On the fourth day of the hunt, we called in a rutting bull that was bigger than any we had seen so far. But he wasn't quite what I was looking for so I decided to pass. Moments later, I stumbled onto this bull while sneaking through some thick timber. He was only about 75 yards away, standing broadside staring at me. I knew there were probably bigger bulls out there, but I decided this was too good of an opportunity to pass up. One shot was all it took. It was a good ending to a great hunt.

I'll play, in 2008 I drew a Henrys Buffalo tag through the regular draw. Then in 2009 I drew a henrys buffalo tag at the expo. I hunted my once in a lifetime buffalo, two years in a row. I think thats pretty luck, dont you Tony!!!

I got lucky, both my dad and I have the same first name, even though I use my middle name. Our taxidermist called my dad thinking he had drawn an expo tag for 2010. Dad called me to let me know I had drawn instead. I didn't believe him either, had to look about four different times just to let it sink in.

The result, I took a nice archery bull off the book cliffs. I couldn't be happier with the extra tags and extra drawing available. Do I wish the money was used better? Yes, I do. But, I wish the money the DWR received from our tags was used better as well....
