Unfortunately, I think those big checks are what guide policy in this state. I'm telling you, they see our elk hunting as a success and there are powers who would love to see our deer hunting just like our elk hunting. High success, huge animals, but unfortunately VERY FEW tags.......and of course ya gotta have conservation tags and someone has to sale them.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think it'll end with a cut of 13,000 tags. Things need to be far more limited than that to produce the best deer in the country as they have elk. 13,000 is just the beginning.

A march on the capital needs to happen. The governor needs to get involved and get things straight, or get voted out of office by a bunch of angry sportsmen who are tired of seeing what we love turned into a hobby for the few and the rich.

Dont forget that there were a lot of people that warned you, a longgg time ago, exactly what SFW was up to.

The chickens have come home to roost...

I don't know that I would blame it ALL on SFW. I haven't seen any of those other groups who enjoy "easy money" from conservation tags go on record against them. And, the UDWR and Wildlife Board probably like that "easy money" too.
If the UDWR and Wildlife Board weren't enjoying that conservation tag money and the benefit of expo tags, I don't think even the great Don could keep it going. UDWR gets a big chunk of cash for nothing when it comes to conservation tag money.

Yes, I do think SFW (Don) plays a big role. Without conservation tags and expo tags, SFW might exist, but not at the level they're at....not even close. But, it's not just them who benefit. Some of the others aren't as vocal as SFW, but they sure the heck are taking advantage of the tags as much as the others. But remember, all those organizations are businesses trying to pay salaries, bills and grow. Those that the general public need to ultimately hold responsible are the folks who are supposed to work for the tax payers of Utah, and that's the UDWR.

I too am interested in what Bart has as a plan with the new UWC.
Specifically, what kind of plans will it have in regards to habitat work, predator control, highway fencing and wildlife overpasses/underpasses. UDOT is going to have to put more emphasis on highway safety in regards to wildlife/vehicle collision problems. The state of Arizona has already been sued for not addressing the problem because of the danger to human life that could result in wildlife collision. It may end up alot cheaper to put more money into keeping elk and deer off highways and at the same time providing a means for them to follow their historical migration routes. It seems like a win/win situation.
I believe that the SFW promotes what they see as the best way to help our deer herds. They may be tilted towards having more mature bucks right now, but I believe that they also are in the trenches when it comes to put their money where it counts-- habitat improvements. I personally would like to see more of the money put into predator reduction programs.
If any of you on here don't understand the direct correlation between the decline of mule deer numbers across the west and the ban of 1080 poison for predator control, then you simply don't understand what this fight is about. Talk all you want about the other problems like habitat, highway mortality-- until we do a better job at predator reduction, we may all just be spitting in the wind and throwing jabs at each other that in effect will have little to do with increasing herd numbers.
When you hear that there are 2500 to 3000 cougars in the state and they average one deer kill a week-- you better believe it. then on top of that, take into account what coyotes take, especially in regards to fawns-- you can start to get a real picture of the real battle. The pie is only so big, if we want a bigger share of it, we have to reduce the competetion numbers.

We are starting a 501c4 group, so we will NOT be focusing on habitat restoration, highway fencing, or any conservation projects. We are in the early stages, still drafting up our official name,, by-laws, and mission. What happened at the WB was troubling to many people, not just what was passed, but HOW it was passed. I, and many others, are concerned about the process and how the majority of hunters/sportsmen along with the biologists are being left out of the decision making processes. Sure, they hold RAC and WB meetings, but when they WB has a printed response to what was passed BEFORE any public comments were taken, then it takes on the appearance that the decision(s) was made long before the meeting even started.

We will NEVER raise funds by auctioning permits that have been taken from the public, it is our view that this ensures skewed priorities for a group. Again, we are NOT a conservation group, we will NOT be getting involved in that end of the spectrum. We will be focusing on the process, the politics involved in the process, and creating avenues for the majority to be heard, as well as having the recommendations of the biologists given greater weight. I was, for some reason, contacted by Brett Prettyman for an article he was writing. He asked questions and I answered them as I saw them. There are some great people involved in this upstart group, I am a small fry that just happened to be the most vocal one. This group was the brain child of others, I just jumped on board when I saw where they were headed.

We will be focusing on the process and on given hunters resources to become more educated on issues/policies/biology. The Utah Wildlife Cooperative is nothing more than a facebook group, we haven't even settled on a name for our 501c4 group, but I will post up more info as it becomes available.

Thank you!

NO! Like I said, I am just a small fry on this. I don't think anyone will be getting a salary, but for sure NOT me. I have plenty of issues to deal with at home, so I have neither the time nor the desire to be anything but someone offering up his opinion from time to time.

Why do you ask such a question, RUS?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-21-10 AT 04:21AM (MST)[p]Will your "COOP" allow for representatives from all sporting groups in utah to sit in?

As seems we would support reform in this broken, money driven process. It gets old driving the miles to represent views and not even a spoken word during the closed forum, yet no other group speaks.

UTAH HOUNDSMEN ASSN.

sportsmen vs sportsmen
We all lose!

Anytime I see "non-profit" it raises an eye brow. How many groups start with good intentions and then the administrative costs out weigh the benefits?

No offense intended.

Way, way, WAY too much special interest groups in ya'lls state with not near enough representation for the people. Maybe its time for a march on the state house, letters, phone calls, emails. I thinks its unreal seeing how Utah operates their game system with repect to the special interest folks.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-21-10 AT 08:24AM (MST)[p]In Utah it's the SFW, in Colorado it's LO vouchers being sold by 'facilitators'.

There, I was polite, I didn't use the P word.

Brian,
Just curious what is the number of tags the division should issue? How do you come up with a number? Buck to Doe ratio's don't work? The division say's it's impossible to have accurate count on deer numbers. I think the 29 units and limiting permits is best for the number of deer we currently have. I hunt in the northern region specifically the cache. and I hope that all 13,000 tags cut come from my region. I'd be willing to bet that that there arn't 3000 total deer on the cache with a buck to doe ratio that warranted a 3 day hunt. Something drastic needs to be done if my kids are going to be able to hunt 10 years from now.

That's the problem no-one has the time to donate all. Therefore some people would need to paid. When people are paid they have to show results that the people paying want or they get fired. It's that simple!

How many new Orgs and groups do we need?

They all need money to function, they all say they can make things better, they all say they will be responsible with our money, they all say they won't take a big salary, they all say we will have more game and our live will be full of bliss!

Our strength will be diluted and our money will be misused, all in the name of conservation and representation.

To how many causes are we able to contribute?

NO THANKS, I'll dance with the one who brought me!

Don't ask for more money, the well is dry!

Respectfully, Zeke
