LAST EDITED ON Dec-22-10 AT 11:21AM (MST)[p]Here's the new survey I made. I added a few questions. Please copy the link to an email and pass it on. I'm hoping to get a broader view than just monster muley posters. Email it to everyone you know who hunts Utah's General season. I'm also looking for other websites to post it on, let me know if you know of any good ones.

Also let me know what you think of the survey. I tried to be as non-biased as possible. Let me know if some of the questions are hard to understand.

UTAH GENERAL SEASON DEER SURVEY (25 Questions)
I have created this survey to present to the Utah DWR if we get enough responses. Please fill it out truthfully if you are a Utah resident or hunt Utah's General hunts on a regular basis. You may only fill it out once, but i encourage you to have family and friends fill it out as well. It is confidential. please keep in mind these questions are for the General season deer hunts in Utah. Thanks.

Way to step up Rydub. I think this info will be far more valuable way a finding public opinion than a few meetings that not everyone can attend. We have the technology now. Glad to see we are using it. Love the manadatory reporting question.

Thanks for the time you put into this.

Half decent survey....

the pertinent questions really suprised me.
Q 10 Are hunters happy with G.S. hunts 65% are 35% aren't.

Q13 basically asks if you are willing to give up opportunity
for bigger deer. 59% want to hunt 39% want to give up opportunity.

Q 15 will cutting permits improve quality 61% said no 39% said yes.

Q 16 will 29 units work. 55% no 35% yes.

Even in this forum the answers are coming back that people want to hunt.

2010 TOTALS
P.E.T.A. = 0 HUNTERS GONE
UTAH WILDLIFE BOARD = 13,000 HUNTERS GONE

Hey guys the results so far show the upper end of successful hunters. Lets all make an effort to email this survey to everyone that hunts in Utah. Many old timers are not going to fill this out, and we all no how age affects our answers. Maybe take the time to help someone fill it out who is computer el iterate. Call your father, sons, and daughters and tell them about the survey. Even read them the questions and take the time to fill it out with them. Maybe post it on a facebook page or other sites Utah hunters will see. If we could get enough hunters to fill out this survey maybe it will have some power and do some good.

We all get on this site and throw out ideas but nothing ever gets done. I don't no if this survey will truely help, but Rydub and I are really trying to make things happen and give we the people a voice.

You can't kill them on the couch!

Is there a way to make it so you can only do the survey once? I filled it our from the link above and then a friend emailed me a link and it let me go back in. A coworker has joked that he has filled it out four times now.

Mark

I wish there was. i was hoping that making it longer would prevent people from doing that. i think if this survey got a couple thousand responses that it would out weigh the obsessed people who fill it out multiple times.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-22-10 AT 03:36PM (MST)[p]Interesting survey, here are some problems I see.

1?it's not random
2?it's obvious you can take it more than once
3?it's not clear if many of the questions are just specific to Utah, some are implied but none of them state that this is just a survey for directed for UT deer hunters.
4-question #10 one of the 'big' questions is really a neutral question. It doesn't clarify what you are trying to ask.

Here are some preliminary results of the data, which BTW are different than others interpretation of the data posted a few hours ago.

General assumptions (assuming random?which we know its not)
Question #1
The majority of people that took this survey are over 30 years of age.

Question #2
The majority of people that took this survey prefer to hunt with primitive weapons

Question #3
The majority of people that took this survey have harvested less than 5 deer in the past 10 years

Question #4
The majority of people that took this survey are shooting deer that are 3pt or better

Question #5
The majority of people that took this survey take more than 20 days to ?prepare? for their hunt.

Question #6
The majority of people that took this survey are into spot and stalk type of hunting. I guess that makes sense given #2

Question #7
The majority of people that took this survey take more than 5 days off of work to go hunting.

Question #8
The majority of people that took this survey don't like to shoot bambi?s.

Question #9
The majority of people that took this survey hunt some region in the state.

Question #10
The majority of people that took this survey although NOT statistically significant are not content with their hunting opportunity.

Question #11
The majority of people that took this survey believe the deer population in the state is decreasing.

Question #12
The majority of people that took this survey travel more than 50 miles to hunt.

Question #13
The majority of people that took this survey but again NOT statistically significant, would like to see ?better quality? general season hunts.

Question #14
The majority of people that took this survey support mandatory harvest reporting for general season deer hunts.

Question #15
The majority of people that took this survey but again NOT statistically significant, feel that decreasing tags will improve quality.

Question #16
The majority of people that took this survey but again NOT statistically significant, approve the 29 units for 2012

Question #17
The majority of people that took this survey are for testing rules and limitations.

Question #18
See no. 2

Question #19
The majority of people that took this survey support auction tags.

Question #20
The majority of people that took this survey like CWMUs. Yeah!

Question #21
The majority of people that took this survey will hunt predators or at least ?shoot? them.

Question #22
The majority of people that took this survey want a bounty on coyotes

Question#23
The majority of people that took this survey believe predators and bad management are the cause of declining deer herds

Question #24
The majority of people that took this survey think we should be required to take surveys while applying for big game tags.

Question #25
The majority of people that took this survey want to keep LE units and GS units separated.

Conclusions?
The majority of people that took this survey like to hunt and believe we have decreasing deer herds in the state. But most like the CWMU program:)

You can take it more than once???!!!!! Therefore it has 0 meaning. The numbers dont mean anything when somebody can manipulate them by taking it 10,20, or if your really bored 50 times. I would suggest being able to only take it once per URL.

People are too ignorant/passionate to be honest about how they personally feel about this issue to take it just once.

Still a good idea! Just needs to be thought out a little more as to regulating it. It appears to have solid interest if people for the most part are only taking it once.

******I just clicked on the setting that allows you to only take it once. not sure how it stops someone from taking it more that once but its worth a try.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-22-10 AT 04:23PM (MST)[p]Copy that you fixed it!! I just tried to take it again and it gave me the boot. Still skued the info. Better hope for 10000 replies to gain the info needed. I dont think the majority of Utahn's out there hunts with a bow as the survey so far convey's.

See if there is a way you can find what computer URL addresses posted multiples and dropem back to one there has to be a way.

I agree LOWCOUNTRY. I also noticed that from the first 100 post to the next 200 post things swayed heavily on some questions. hopefully i get enough responses over the next few weeks to get good numbers.

I can look at the URL code on who has taken the survey and i dont see many who have re-taken it multiple times. i will sort through them and delete then if they abuse the survey.

Great survey, but needs to be tweeked so no multiple users keep taking it .Also results on # 4 dont jive with results on # 8 other than that i love the concept.

Sweet survey! Thanks for getting something going, so we all have a chance at being heard. I hope the info you get will help with the dwr's decisions.

Isn't it funny how something is not "statistically significant" with a 2 to 1 margin???

I could care less about who what where and when with the surveys. But I do find it funny that every time one is taken IN WHATEVER TYPE OF AUDIENCE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HUNT WINS BY HUGE MARGINS OVER THE SIZE OF DEER...

This survey is pretty good . But what are the furture plans for the information that you will aquire . I have passed it on to those that i know that are in the category of the average general season rifle hunters.

It's weird how 60% are satisfied with the genaral season but almost 60% say the deer herd were they hunt is declining?

That implies to me that 60% of people are content with herds continuing to decline. WTF!!!

Maybe people are acknowledging the FACT that buck numbers are a minute piece of the puzzle????? Seems fairly transparent.

From the "Comment Section" PURE COMEDY GOLD!!! Whoever added this thanks!!!

What percentage of tags should go to the youth. What is the number the deer count should fall to before you would support tag cuts? If SFW did not support 29 units would you be more like to support it? Is wiley wapiti really that angry all the time? How many MM members think Elitehornhunter is a clown?

This poses several valid Questions.
1 Youth Tags should be over 10% guaranteed

2 15 - 100 buck to doe... Then a unit should go in to a LE Status, with no questions asked.

3 SFW support doesn't matter to me one way or the other.

4 Hardly ever angry. Just sick of one mentality that has been proven in multiple states, in Utah since 1994, trying to get different results by doing exactly the same thing.

5 EHH ain't a clown

Good survey, thanks. I like the fact question 9 shows pretty good distrubution of hunters throught the different regions.

Great idea with the survey! I think qustion #10 should be more clear in regards to what general season your referring to, 2010 3 day hunt, 2011 9 day hunt, or the newly appointed option 2 B.S.?

almost 500 responses. thanks for the compliments. hopefully we can keep it going. to be honest the reason i made the survey wasn't to prove any points or anything, but to hopefully show the DWR how easy it would be to implement there own surveys online. there free to do and dont take long to create. i think they could be very beneficial to all hunting especially with the new 29 units. if they made them mandatory for those who draw tags they could use the hunters input to help benefit us all.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-23-10 AT 11:05PM (MST)[p]Dub I actually had this idea a few weeks back.

It would work like this.

During the online application process AFTER you purchase your Combo or Small Game license you MUST take a survey and provide input. The Division can ask questions pertinent to pending topics such as the new deer plan. Like opinion on statewide archery or cutting 13,000 permits with no biologic payoff.

The system could be hijacked but would cost $26.00 per vote to do so. This would greatly reduce the impact of special interest groups, checks being handed out in the middle of WB meetings and most importantly end hunter apathy.

To go along with this, if a subject gets enough support or opposition it is out of the WB hands... They cant go out on their own and create B.S. like they just did.

True good old American Democracy

I just had my daughter take the survey. She has hunted 3 seasons now. She made an interseting comment, "it sure does seem that most people taking the survey are hardcore hunters". She felt like most of the survey was answred by archers and smokepolers.

She was confused by the question about opportunity. She wanted to know if this was in regards to the size of deer we saw, or the fact that she has drawn a NE tag every year.

Looks like the responses slowed down around 500. thanks for all the responses. i know some of the questions could have used more details or options and that there are a million other questions to be asked but to me it wasn't so much about the survey as it was the support. Hopefully we can push to get surveys like this made mandatory for the new 29 units. if there having a hard time managing the 5 regions now im sure 29 units isn't going to be any easier without extra input from us hunters. i figure the more info we can give them the better decisions they can make. thanks again and keep spreading the survey.
