You pop over a ridge during hunting season and you are busted by this guy.....do you fiddle around and get your spotting scope out or wait for a broadside view of the headgear or do you fill your tag immediately.....

LAST EDITED ON Dec-27-10 AT 05:41AM (MST)[p]For most places that i travel to and make the time for a good hunt, I'd have to get a little better look. He does have possibilities...:)

The body on this buck really looks unreal, almost too unreal!

Personally I'da dropped him....he's 300 lbs field dressed and 30 inches...He's an old War Horse..closer pic..

BOOM and BOOM, He looks good don't care what he scores or how wide he is. I like him and that would be enough for me to pull the trigger.

DRT!......That's dead right there, for me anyway.

That guy is a horse!

"....you'll shoot your eye out kid!"

LAST EDITED ON Dec-27-10 AT 09:53AM (MST)[p]Colorado, I always pull out the spotting scope, and I'd let him walk. Utah, most likely I would kill him. especially on pubic land.

I'd let him walk......as long as he was walking toward my truck. He's too big to pack very far!

Eel

it's not a 40 incher but it's closer than the last 40 incher you posted....

Im havin a tough time puttin him at 30 inch. I dont think he is that big. Lots of height to him and i hate the crab forks. Dont get me wrong helluva buck i just dont see the 30 and with the forks it depends on the day and where im hunting. But most likely i would end up pulling the trigger

Depends on where you are hunting, what you've passed up already and what you've got on the wall at home. I'd run an arrow through him no questions asked.

Week forked, not 30" wide and a little bit of trash.Maybe on the last day but not before that.

I'd Hammer Him!(on any genral hunt)

Mature buck with out a doubt. I wouln't care one bit what he scored. Age to me is as much of a throphy as the horns.

Boom, . . . . Whack. . . . . Big buck down, no ground shrinkage because I never sized him out.

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

I'd shoot on most hunts. Lots of character throughout that buck and he is darn near pushin' 30"... that monstrous body, neck, and head size kinda makes his antlers loot a bit smaller than they are.

He really only looks to be 25"-26" wide to me. That being said, any general unit here in Utah I'm lettin the lead fly without lookin... If I'm on an LE- like the Books- I'm lookin at him closer. Probably takin him there too though.

Of course- the snow behind him makes him look huge, so chances are I'd get the fever and miss him anyway... LOL Nice pic

As i mentioned above in the early posts with the farther away pic, i'd want a better look. It doesn't take but a moment to use your binos to see what he is. The body on this buck is probably at least 20-30 lbs heavier than any buck that i've ever taken...but i don't hunt for body size.

I've already got higher, wider, heavier, more points, just all around better bucks. That's why i answered as i did! Generally, i have to go outa state on expensive DIY trips to be able to hunt big bucks like this guy. When i do, i want to at least give it a good go to get a buck better than any i've gotten so far. I don't mind passing bucks up like this guy and have passed up many, some larger, in my day. I also don't mind coming home empty as i did this year.

Now, a week or more into a 10 day hunt, is another story entirely. This would be the type of buck i'd love to bring home and be very pleased with in the hunt. Seems many here would love to kill a big ol monster buck but they will not hold off the trigger on nice 150-155 class ones like this guy is. You want a Dandy, you got to check them out with the glass and hold off that trigger until you find him! just saying!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-28-10 AT 03:51PM (MST)[p]Any general unit - no question, no hesitation at all.

Bookcliffs - no hesitation whatsoever.

Paunsaugunt - would let him turn sideways and get at least one better look but would probably not let him walk.

Henry's - He would go on the list, but wouldn't drill him on sight. I would definitely GPS this location and try and find him later if something bigger didn't come my way.

UNC summed it up pretty good.

Roy said, "UNC summed it up pretty good."

UNC had said, "weak forks and willow racked pass on him"

Roy said, "Paunsaugunt - would let him turn sideways and get at least one better look but would probably not let him walk."

HuH? lol

In the "what pistol for Bears" thread in the Campfire, Roy said, "If you are worried about black bears then your concern is a little misplaced, if it is grizzlies then..."

HuH?

Me thinks Roy had a bit too much Christmas cheer! :)

There is only a few tags where I wouldn't shoot him on sight! He is an old timer and that is a trophy quality in and of itself.

I'd be checking him out through my scope. Most places....BANG!....but not a mounter for me. Great buck though.

Every hunting season you miss is one you can not make up

Heavy bases, HUGE body. Not much for forks, but I would shoot almost anywhere. I guess that is why I probably won't ever kill a 200 incher. I just like a big mature bucks so much I am not that picky. I would pass on the Henry's or Strip, but I will probably never have a tag either of those units.

There is no such thing as a sure thing in trophy mule deer hunting.

I'd have to look through the binos once, but when I see that kicker and and know hes nothing to be ashamed of on a general season.. hes comin down! That is if i could hit him.

nice buck.

I would be more proud of that buck than some of the 4 1/2 year old 170-180 class bucks I see posted. Any time you can kill an old buck like that its a trophy.
