Hi Guys,

My old man and I are both Utah residents who have never hunted out of state. Neither of us have any points outside of Utah. Both of us are wanting a good chance at a 170+ deer and are willing to wait several years. Im 34 and my dad is 60. We are interested in hunting either Montana, Wyoming, or Colorado. For those of you are are pretty well informed about out of state hunts, will any of you be willing to share some information about what units we should apply for in each state and how long we are likely to wait for a tag? Id love to start hunting more, but really have no idea what units are good outside of Utah.

Thanks!

For a $100 the huntin fool will give you a wealth of information. Lists the western states and the hunts are ranked in order of big buck quality and ease of hunt. Draw odds are given, and drawing deadlines, and amount of points needed are given as well.

Some on here don't like the service, but it's a good deal in my book.

I would have to say colorado. You can draw a good unit in 3-4 years. There are units that you can draw as a second choice and can take a 170+ buck. But you gotta remember, no matter what unit you hunt, its still hunting. You still have to get lucky.

Travis you will have to wait 10 to 20 years for a good hunt.
do your home work on the state you and your dad pick, and go
general season and enjoy many out of state hunts together,
170+ bucks are not easy to get unless you are willing to hire a
outfitter or pay a trespass fee. I bet you and your dad will
have more memories on all the general season tags than the one
tag you may or may not draw.

I think if you picked a unit in CO that doesn't take many pts. to draw and just hunt it every year and really get to know the area you will eventually (in a couple of years) be bagging 160-180 type bucks close to every year. Every unit in CO has them, just need to get to know the area. My friend, his 16 year old daughter and I have been hunting the same unit now for 4 years, it can be drawn as a second choice tag and we have killed 8 bucks between 161 and 184 between us three. We just know the unit REALLY well.

Try Montana and the Walk-in Access areas around Billings.

The season is a month and right during the rut.

We killed two 160 class bucks in two mornings of hunting, and passed another buck about the same size.

Marley is right on. 170+ bucks can be found in all of colorados units. Pick one that can be drawn second choice. Apply, gain a bonus point and still hunt every year.
Also Az. has some great coues deer hunting and some units can be drawn almost every year. Az. coues are one of my favorite hunts!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-29-10 AT 11:28AM (MST)[p]Cross reference the Colo. Leftover tag list for some dang good 2nd choice units.

I think Montana did away with the Guide/Outfitter 100% draw tags for 2011 but you have great oods at the elk/deer Combo tag in the general draw.

Wyoming has alot of good area's 1 pt will draw most years 'cheapie fee' in the Region option--plus 25% of the region tags go into the Random draw for all that do not draw in the 75% draw.

If you guys archery hunt----Arizona has bow hunting that starts in January and you can 'come back' for the fall hunts if you do not harvest in January.....some of those south Az. units hold both Coues and Muley bucks.

Save your money and use the M&M Oods link for double checking units of interest in all the western states.

Nothing beats hunting with your dad so go and enjoy!

Thanks for the info guys. We have lots of great memories hunting general units and LE's in Utah, but just want to add to fun by going to another state.

For those of you suggesting Colorado, can anyone give me a list of their preferred units, preferably on the western side of the state?

I would second Colorado. Also Wyoming H & G is coming back some and can be drawn in one to three years.

The western border units in Colo are tough draws that take many P-points.

201, 1, 10, 21, 31, 40, 61.......and so forth.....

Ya may catch a break on 11 but I have never looked into 11 for deer -----just Antelope.
