Scope Recommendations

I got a Ruger 7MM mag for Christmas, but it didn't come with a scope. This gun will be used primarily for muley hunting with shots up to 400-500 yards. My price range is probably up to $600. I just wanted to get some recommendations from the "experts", so any advice will be appreciated...

Leupold 3 x 9 is a good all around scope. Depends on what you are planing on doing with the gun. But a 3 x 9 is a good place to start. When you get into the bigger scopes like the 6.5 x 20 x 50 cost starts going up. A 4 x 12 isn't bad if you want a little more magnification.

For that kind of money I would buy a Leupold also.

Maybe look at one of the models with the BC crosshair so you can use the hash marks at the longer ranges you spoke about. Probably a 3.5x10 vxiii with BC would be my 1st choice.

I've used one of the Leupold 2.5x8 BC and they work great. Also using Swarovski 2x12 with TDS and they work like the BC Leupold but they are a ton more money than you want to spend.

Good luck and let us know what you end up with.

Look at a leupold VXIII 4.5-14x40 in the 30mm tube. You could later have a BDC dial put on it for another $150 or so. Great scope.

+1 marley. Get a 4.5-14 and get the cds system. I think they still have the buy one dial get one free deal. Not sure though.

Take a look at Vortex. I bought a Vortex Viper 4-12x40 with the BDC reticle for my .270 WSM and have loved the scope. It is very clear and bright and I have been very impressed with it. It is definitely in your price range. I have also shot Leupold scopes and like them as well. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

Look at the Zeiss Conquest with rapid Z 600 reticle.
My wife has one on a 270 and I'm putting one on
a 270wsm. Excellent glass. Vortex is good too and
might save you a few bucks. Both ate within your price
range.

I'd buy a JUNKIE Leupold!:D

Look at the Leupold Boone & Crocket 4.5x14x50!

It ain't a real long range Scope but it does have some Yardage crosses!

Leupold 3.5 to 10 vari X III. Light weight, versatile, high quality. I've tried many and keep coming back to that one. HAPPY NEW YEAR. Chip

All sell you a goood scope for $75 truglo trubrite 3x9-44 BDC mounted on gun but never used the cross hairs light up red or green

+1 marley

I have one with the VH Reticle on my 7 mag. I Zero at 200 or 300 and on 14x it's dead on with the holdover crossbars every 100 yards up thru 600 or 700 with a 139 gr. Hornady SST or Interbond doing 3250 out of my Model 700 7MM Rem Mag. It is absolute death on Muleys & Whitetails.
The same reticle in a VX3 LR 6.5 - 20 x 40 gives me basically the same results in my Rem 300RUM Sendero, depending on the load, of course. You can fine tune the system depending on your load of choice.

The B&C is fine too, and was actually designed for big game hunting, where as the VH reticle was meant for varmits. I have a couple of scopes set up with each, and with a little time and good light, I like the VH for extended range shooting with flat shooting rifles. I did get in a bind once with a deer on the move during low light... the thin wire in the VH can be harder to find in this situation compared to the B&C's heavier reticle.

I am thinkering with a Leupold VX3 LR 6.5 - 20 x 50 with the VH reticle AND custom elevation dial for a 7MM RUM. Yeahboy!

+1 Cahunter805

I just put one on a Rem LSS in 300RUM and I'm still in the process of setting up the dial in between working away from home. The scope does come with a MOA dial, and you get one free dial from Leupold. There is a promo free 2nd dial offer going on but you must purchase the scope and get your details in to Leupold before Jan. 1, 2011. You still have one day.

I am a Leupold guy, but the Zeiss Conquest has also served me well recently. I have a couple in 4.5 x 14 x 44, one with the Rapid Z 800 reticle, and I it's good glass in a neat package. I did find out the hard way that they WILL NOT modify a reticle for you in your existing scope. Chalk another one up for Leupold, they'll do just about anything you can dream up!

Look into Vortex! I put the 3.5-10x50 on my 300 mag and love the scope! draws in light great! Clear and very reasonably priced. Cameraland has some screaming deals from time to time I paid $250 for mine.

I would go Leupold also. I just got a 4.5X14X40 WITH TWO FREE CDS IF YOU BUY BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR. wAITING FOR MY TWO DIALS TO SHOW UP. tHE SCOPE WAS $90 OFF AT CABELAS ALSO.

my favorite scope is a vortex viper 6.5-20x44 with the bdc reticle. i love that one and bought another after using it. i think you can get them for around 400

Go with a Leupold variable like the guys are mentioning with their dual dovetail rings/bases and screwin scope caps. You can't go wrong with Leupold!!!

The Leupold 4.5-14 VX-3 CDS riflescope it comes with a custom bullet drop-compensation dial system just turn the dial to the yards you want to shoot I have mind set at 200 yards drop a mule deer at 400 yards just turn the dial too 4 and that it good luck

I have a Leupold Var X-III 4.5x14x40 on my Ackley 280, and it is nice! I really prefer my Nikon Monarch 4.5x16x44. Nice scope, and fairly priced!

Guess I'll go against the grain here and recommend........LEUPOLD!

I've got em on a few rifles including a VX-II on my 7mag. Absolutely no complaints.

Leupold-awesome, but check out the Nikon Monarch series scopes too really bright and clear.

Leupold makes a great scope I have 5 of them myself
With that being said it's not the best scope I've found
3 years ago I tried the Nikon buckmaster 6-18x40 with the BDC reticle and will never buy another Leupold
I do a lot of shooting on the range out to 700 yard and this scope is absolutely perfect
It's extremely clear and has had 100's of rounds fired thru my 300 WSM with no problims at all
Combined that with one of the best warranty on the market and being cheaper than leupold V-11 It's what I would recommend
