Colorado 2nd Choice

Does the Colorado 2nd choice work like Wyoming's, where you can only draw your 2nd choice if it is underdrawn by 1st choice applicants?

Any suggestions on decent 2nd choice areas?? Not asking for any honey holes, just like to hunt deer; I am looking for an area where a 22 inch 4-point would be a good possibility, with a chance for better. PM if you'd like.

Thanks,

I think you could close your eyes and point at a map of CO and find a 24 inch buck!

2nd choice does not use nor generate preference pts. In English after all 1st choice apps with or w/o pts are taken care of it's first come first served till the tags are gone, second choice then 3rd choice etc. OTC if still left over after the draw. 24" bucks are a dimadozen. pick a unit and work harder than the other guy.

Thanks guys! Do the bonus points have any weight after the 1st choice draw?

Any more suggestions on second choice units?

There aren't any 2nd choice tags in 70, 71, or 711, but you can draw some hunts in those units with 0-1 preference point.

Preference points, which are different than bonus points that other states use, only count for 1st choice.

Preference points in colorado are only for your 1st choice. See if this makes since to you. 1st choice draw looks at everyones 1st choice on their app and awards them their 1st choice if they had enough points to draw it. Then for the 2nd choice it looks at what everyone put down as their 2nd choice. if there are any tags left after the 1st go around it will award then to youth who put them as their 2nd choice 1st then move to adults who put that unit as their 2nd choice, and so on down the choices line. Prefernece points dont mean anything after the 1st go around, However if you dont draw your 1st choice you will get a point.
I have saved up 10 resident points by applying for preference points only as my 1st choice and then putting in for a unit that has tags left after the 1st go around and drawing it on my 2nd choice. That way I get a point and I still get to hunt every year. Sure the hunts are not that great but you get to weed out the bad spots while saving points for a trophy.

Last year my son put a point on his 1st choice and because he is a youth he drew his 2nd choice when I did not. I called and asked DOW how is that and that is when they told me that youth have preference in the 2nd choice drawings. There were enough tags left after the 1st go around for the unit we applied for on our 2nd choice for some youth to draw but I did not as I am a adult. Make any since to you? kinda hard to explain in writing.
My advice though. never play the points game again. find a decent unit that you can hunt every year or every other and just hunt, I would love to just get my points overwith and hunt with my kids every year in a medeokore unit. We have found a few units that take 1 or 2 points and are really good but they are going fast. 2 years ago they could be drawn with 0 points. good luck

Yes, this makes perfect sense Oldmoss. That is how I assumed it worked. Check your PM.
