Antelope Island or Henries??

So what does a person with max points do who wants to kill a 200" buck. I have been to the Henries and seen the deer but I have never been to the Island. I hear about all the big deer there is it really true? If anyone has pics of the Island deer please post them.

The island is the easier choice for a guarenteed 200 inch buck, if you could have your choice, but you'd be nuts to put in for the island with max points, because there is only one tag. The Henrys has multiple tags for max point holders.

antleope island is full of big bucks and an almost guarteed 200" or bigger buck. but dont forget you would be on a island with very few trees and little cover and lots of tourists you couldnt ask for a more canned hunt. i live 15 mins from the island and love to go out and see 5 or 6 bucks all over 200 inches in one group. however i wouldnt feel like much of a sportsman killing one. Although i would love to see the tag go to a disabled vet or someone who otherwise are mobily challenged.

It sounds like they're not going to allow any special off trail scouting for the hunter, only the 7 days for the hunt, so that should play into a person choice.
I think I would rather have a Henry's tag. In my opinion, the scouting is a very big part of it for me. I think even if I could scout the island, I'd still rather do the Henry Mtns.

Of course, hunting the island with a muzzleloader or bow could be awfully fun!! And fairly challenging if one were trying to get one of the best bucks.

Hunting the Island for deer will be the equivalent of hunting Yellowstone for elk 15 years ago.

Tame deer that won't go very far if spooked.

Henries would be my choice even though that is not much of a hunt either.

Both are more of a KILL than a hunt.

How is the heries not much of a hunt either? Have you been on the henries? Ya they're big bucks around every tree. But the terrain is pretty dang rugged.

I have to disagree on the Henries being a hunt like the island would be. If you were satisfied with a 170" buck than yes you will kill in the first 5 mins. of the hunt from the road. But most people that draw the Henries are looking for something better than that. That is RUGGED country. I have been sheep hunting in Alaska and I can honestly say that getting to where I could get a shot at my buck this past year was every bit as difficult as the Alaska rock and shale, straight up mountians those sheep were hanging in. I don't know the numbers for sure but from what I could tell as far as the average buck killed on the Henries would probably be somewhere in the 180 class. Those 200+ bucks, although there are quite a few of them, are not stupid. And those 220+ bucks didn't go from 180 to 220 in one year. So they have evaded hunters for quite a few years. I respect your opinion but my experience is much different.

I also want to disagree with you that the Henries is not a hunt. It's rugged as hell, and yeah, you'll see tons of bucks, and I would say it's a guarantee to kill one, but I wouldn't dare say that it's even close to the same guarantee as the island. The island is steep too, but wide open! From probably 5 or 6 different locations on the island, with a spotting scope you could see the majority of it, and locating bucks wouldn't be that hard. I would say that 185-195" bucks can easily be taken from the road on the Henries, but bigger 210+ bucks are smart as hell, and not easily killed. (Ask everyone down there this year about that Bruno buck)

It's funny that back when it was a general unit you call it a "REAL HUNT"! But now it is not a "REAL HUNT" because it is a premium LE unit. WAFJ!!!

Hey littlebuck2
Back to what you started this Discussion Topic about
I,m preety sure I would take eather one being I don't have max points
But if I had to choose one I would say Henries
A lot more room to run around which would make for a better experience

OK TONY AND WAYNE YOU CAN GO BACK TO WHO'S IS BIGGER

ITS ALL ABOUT MEAT-IN WITH THE TAXIDERMIST

LAST EDITED ON Jan-09-11 AT 08:07PM (MST)[p]Their are 45 bucks per 100 doe's. There are bucks that die of old age. There are few hunters and few competition. That in my opinion is not as much of a hunt as tougher circumstances.

Yes killing a giant buck down there is still tough and takes skill and effort, but killing a good buck is not anything that takes much skill. That is what they manage the unit for.

It was much harder to kill a great buck back when it was general season and not bucks on every ridge.

I would still draw a tag and kill a Buck on the Henry Mountains but I would not on Antelope Island. That is my opinion.

I found out the hunt was going to happen in 2011 last summer. At that time, I had said; there's no way I would put in for the island hunt because of all the baggage that would come with it.

Ok well where are the pics? It seems like you always see sheds and deer pics of deer on the Henries where are they from the Island?

I think either hunt would make memories for a lifetime. Personally I would choose the Henries. It will be an actual hunt with scouting and obstacles to over come. Heck just getting around on the unit can be a very big challenge at times.

For anybody to say it is not much of a hunt would be laughable. It will be what YOU make of it. Good luck and go create a life long memory!!!

littlebuck2, there have been lots of threads about island bucks and sheds with pics in the past. Ya might hace to do a search. Just last week dleanard was nice enough to share pics of some biggies, but he forgot to get Doyles permission to post them, so they got nuked. :)

I would take the island hunt. There are bucks on that mountain ive seen in videos that are better then anything Ive seen on the henry mountains.

The harder you work the luckier you get!!

Other than a High Fence hunt is privately owned land and privately owned animals that was created for the purpose of raising animals and hunting them...... Nothing!

I've been one of the lucky ones. I've hunted the Henries a ton, (back in the day) buffalo too, a couple times, with friends.

It's a special place for sure and still a real hunt.

I will never be able to hunt it again thanks to removing the 3pt or better rule and encouraging a killing-fest of all the young bucks! Subsequently it was closed and re-opened as ...well...Limited Entry! (sour grapes)

The Island? I have been there and seen deer but it's not my cup-of-tea. But,I'm all for having a hunt there. After all, I'm PRO-HUNTING!

The reason you don't see many of the sheds from Antelope Island,
is because they usually go to people of privilege, like Tony/Fishon, same guy who comes on here & sells his gospel of no hunter should have an advantage over another fellow hunter.

Is that the same Tony/Fishon that got the Island open to shed hunting for the public and has never stepped back on the island since?

I would probably be grateful for that deed instead of ignorant. But I think you would rather be ignorant.

+1 fishon,

Sometimes we should over look the perks if the greater cause out weighs the perk.

This is kind of how I feel about the conservation tags. Not totally happy about the whole process, but the dollars rised that do actually benifit our wildlife are worth the "evil".

I think that is what you are talking about on a bigger scale?

i dont know why i would have had to ask doyles permission to post my pics that i took with my camera through my spotting scope unless doyle owns the deer on the island. i was wondering where my pics kept going here they are again maybe the third time is a charm. ive got a ton of pics that i took with my phone through my scope. i hope to transfer to my computer soon one of wich is of a buck bigger than anyone of these posted.

dleonard,
No offense to you, I just remember somebody saying they had to ask Doyle before they posted pic of a buck. Just making a smart A remark. I like Doyle, so don't think I'm bashing him.
By the way, nice pics. Those are toads.

i assumed it was a joke. i know doyle had nothing to do with my posts being nuked. i figured someone just said somthing that someone didnt like so they deleted the whole thread ohwell.
