LAST EDITED ON Feb-01-11 AT 12:46PM (MST)[p]I have followed MM for a couple years now and appreciate all the advice and knowledge that gets passed around. For my first post, I would like your opinions on this very general situation.

I am planning to start applying for muley tags in other states. I would like to both get to hunt every year or two and accumulate points toward a real trophy (180+) hunt. My question is, if you had to choose between Colorado and Wyoming, which would you hunt frequently and which would you accumulate points for and why?

Thanks for the replies!

My recommendation, If you are in decent shape and willing to hunt hard, look into the Regulations of what's required in a muzzle loader, get one of those like that, and be able to hunt most years in the high country of South West Colo.

You are not going to get much better advice than that right there!!!

You could get as good or a better buck there doing that as any unit or area that takes a lot of points in either state.

Does it have to be sw colorado? You can draw great units almost every year with archery or muzz. The best advise I can give is find a unit you can draw often and get to know it. you will kill more and bigger deer by hunting the same area year after year when you know the area. Hunt hard and you will have that 180 or 200 inch deer on your wall after a few years. And it doesn't have to be unit 61 or 21 or any of the top for that matter.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-02-11 AT 09:08AM (MST)[p]2nd colorado. You can hunt 2nd, 3rd choice units every year with the oppurtunity to shoot a big (180+) buck every time, while you are still collecting points for a special unit.

Also it doesn't have to be archery or muzzleloader either, plenty of rifle 2nd choice tags out there.

Yep, I'd 3rd Colorado, and I live in Wyoming. More big deer and better management, with a much better chance of taking a big buck in Colorado. But you ought to also get points in Utah and Nevada, and if you are young, maybe Arizona.

Good hunting; we'll look for those big buck pictures in a year or two.

Its simple, build points in both states. Wyoming is easy and inexpensive to do this being that you dont have to purchase a license to do so. Way to go Wyoming!!!! In the mean time apply for Colorado and if you dont draw at least you can acquire a point.

Nice job, BFM! You just jinxed us. WY will now implement a new policy requiring us to buy a license for a point. Just watch....:)

I got put in time out for a bad signature! Sorry Founder...

LAST EDITED ON Feb-02-11 AT 08:38PM (MST)[p]So if colorado is the place to be, any recommendations on 2nd choice units to explore while i build points? I would prefer the western half of the state if possible.

Points in the states you can't hunt this year if you're young and if your old just try and draw anything.

Why do you have to choose?

By the numbers Colorado has better deer, but you can buy points in WY and put in CO, then when you get drawn in CO, put in the next year in WY and you can draw there too and have 2 great mulie hunts back to back!
