I have not hunted montana for 9 years. We currently have some deer points and are thinking about applying this year. I was wondering if anyone had information on unit 7 and custer national forest. I am basically looking for info. on amount of deer, quality of deer, and the number of hunters. like I said we have not been there for a while so any help would be appreciated.

It has changed a ton in that area in the last ten years. If you are talking about Ashland, Broadus, Colstrip. The deer numbers are down significantly as far as I can tell. I know a few people that hunted in the northern end of 7 and told me that deer numbers were better. It does not seem to be as crowded as it was in years past, but I always go near thanksgiving. Seems there has been a couple of bad winters in a row and I saw it was way below zero this week in Broadus. There is still deer around but don't expect it to be like it used to be,

Just call the fish and game or look online at at the F&G website for flying counts, or winter range counts. Thats a very good way to determine how many deer are there. not sure if they count there but do in other parts of the state. Also if its a permit area look in last years regulations and see how many permits they gave out last year. I don't know if the area your talking about is getting hit hard but there is alot of places in Eastside MT that are getting hit extremly hard by snow and a good die off is expected. Find the horn Goose!

Didn't see much this past year. Probably less next year based on the winter so far. I hear for $10 you can hunt nonya's place :]. He has his own outfitters license and was waaaaay against 161 passing :].
