LAST EDITED ON Feb-12-11 AT 03:39PM (MST)[p]The night before opening day, My wife and I drove for over 500 miles to get to eastern Montana. Once there, we met up with my father in law, who had the hotel room all checked in, and cat fish set lines out. After checking the set lines we talked to some ranchers and got on some good looking hunting grounds. My father in law goes to that particular ranch during the off season and helps out on the ranch so we can hunt the grounds come hunting season Even while hunting, we still find ourselves stopping at all the watering holes making sure that there is enough water pumping into the tanks.
Opening day found us about a half mile from the truck walking along some bluffs to get into prime position for when the deer start heading back to the bluffs from the farm land down below. The plan was to get my wife a nice buck and video it, and then she would video us hunting.
As soon as it started to get light. We settled in on a small knoll where we could scan the "bad lands" of eastern Montana. It only took me about 5 minutes to spot the first movement of the morning. I could just make out the out line of several deer piling over a ridge about 500 yards away. I could tell that 3 of them were good looking bucks. I pointed out the deer to my wife and father in law, and grabbed the video camera and started filming the deer. They were getting close fast, when they disappeared over a ridge that we didn't even know was there. But when the popped back out at only 250 yards I fumbled to get the camera on the bucks.
The first buck looked good, but we wanted to see the other two. Shortly after the first one appeared out popped the second. A heavy, 25 in 5 by 5. Definitely a shooter I our book. We still had a couple minutes until legal shooting light, so we held off. Thats when the third buck came into view. A wide 4 point, (3 point with eye guards) My wife liked the looks of that buck, so she settled in for a shot. Instead of setting the video camera up, and trying to shoot the other 5 point, I held tight to the video camera. Her dad gripped his binoculars to see where she hit.
BOOM! she had missed. Confused the back ran towards us and disappeared in a gully. Everything was silent for a split second suddenly he appeared only about 75 yards away. He spotted us and made a hard left and started out fast across a flat. My wife ran up the hill to get a better shot and with one more shot, she put the buck down for good.
It was cold out, so we gutted him, took pictures, and headed out again. The three of us walked together for awhile. I decided to keep going solo, and let my wife go with her dad to video. I went for a long loop without seeing anything that I was interested in shooting. Meanwhile, My wife and dad looped around a corner and had a buck jump up in front of them. "My wife yelled, SHOOT UM DAD" Given the circumstances her dad fired a true bullet and piled up the first buck that we seen earlier in the morning. For the next 4 or so hours we ended up clearing out some of the does on the ranch. Each of us filled one of our doe tags. At around 3:30ish we decided to take a ride down by the river, where all the deer feed at night and also where there is a reputation to hold some whiteys. As we neared the field we could see that a lot of deer had stayed in the alfalfa field and apparently were not planning on leaving anytime soon. There was a dike that ran parallel right through the center of the field, and right on the other side of it stood two nice bucks.
I was the only one left with a buck tag, so we decided that I would shoot a buck and then everyone else could try and fill some doe tags. We finally crept to the dike and peeked up over the top. There they were about 200 yards out. My wife had the video camera out, but unfortunately she had the camera on a group of whitetails that where to the right of my buck. (which held a big buck, that I would have shot over the muley, had I seen it before) I got into position and steadied my 300 Winny over the bank. While looking at the bucks, I figured they were very close to the same size, but the one on the left looked to have a couple inch kicker. With that I settled the crossairs on the feeding buck and pulled the trigger. Nothing happened.... Earlier, while shooting at a doe, this same thing happened, I looked at my safety and it was half way on, when i took it the rest of the way the gun shot straight up in the air. This time was different although, my safety was completely off, but I didn't want to touch it at all and have my gun go off and scare the deer.
Finally I worked my bolt, only to find out that I hadn't put a shell in the chamber! lol whoops.... Even though the deer were not going nowhere I started to get nervous, and my father in law is in my ear saying "shoot,,, come on shoot... shooot" My scope was going in circles around the bucks. Finally I let go of the gun and put my head down to calm my nerves. It worked. I was able to put him in the scope once again, settle the crossairs just behind his last rib because he was quartering away and let fly. He didn't know what hit him. Dumped him in his tracks.
Deer are now scattering everywhere. We jumped off the dike and ran along the side of it, popped up on it once again and hammered 3 more does. It was an end to fantastic day of hunting. We spent the rest of the night gathering up deer and hanging deer. The next day we loaded um up in the horse trailer and started the long voyage back home.
Oh,,, and that couple inch kicker that i seen on my buck... disappeared once i walked up to the buck...must have seen a branch or something in the back ground...
