My dad put in for a muzzle loader tag in unit 67 this year. Im not looking for peoples honey holes in unit (unless you want to share), just wondering if any one has hunted it in the last couple of years for deer, and if you saw many deer? Also what size deer would you think would be a reasonable to try and hold out for? Any other info on unit would be great, thanks!

I shot this buck around 8:00 am on opening day of 3rd season. It was the 2nd buck I saw. I blew 7 points on the tag. I went out one other day during the season just to look around and didn't see much. We've had a typical winter and the deer herd should fair well.

If you dont mind, what part of 67 did you shoot that great buck? I understand that the deer probly wont be in the same area during muzzy season, just wondering if you hunted lower areas to the south or if you were up high? Thanks for your post and the pic, getting pumped to go hunting! September is to far away!!!!

Hunted there 5 years ago before the big winter kill.
Tons of bucks, No problem to glass up 50 bucks a day. 3rd season.
Most went 22-25" Very few hunters, that was nice. deer were down low, and the elk hunters were up high.
Fun hunt,

sounds like you had a great hunt! Ive heard that the deer population has still not recovered from that bad winter? The last few year they havent been giving out many tags, so hopefully its getting better?

The herds are slowly making a recovery, but I doubt we'll ever see deer numbers like we had prior to 2007/2008. I can remember seeing hundreds of deer each day while out elk hunting for a late season cow. I don't think we'll ever have 4th season tags in the Gunnison units again. The Governor's tag holder shot a buck in one these units, so there are still some monsters out there. I think the points to draw will continue to rise. It might be a good time to draw a tag if you can.

Hey Adam, I am not much on typing but I could probably be some help to your dad. I muz hunted there one year and rifle hunted there a few years before and after the bad winter kill. If you would PM me with your tel # (or i could PM you with my #) I would be glad to share a few things with both of you.

Population isn't near what it was prior to that 07-08 winter. The days of going and picking a handful of bucks out of several hundred just isn't there. Now you may see over several weeks of scouting (and season) what you would have normally seen in a day. As far as what to hold out for, we are headed back 2nd season with 2 tags and I'm going to try to hold out for something over 190 since we'll have 6 extra sets of eyes helping out while they're elk hunting.

I have hunted 67 in the past and if you are planning on hunting South from Powderhorn then you are going to have some problems getting East into public land due to private land along the road 3036 to Los Pinos Pass. There is one route called Huntsman road but other than that I only know of one other route that can give you access - If you go North East on Los Pinos Pass you will have alot of public land. Best to purhase a map of the Gunnison National Forest - I am not sure where all of the bucks are that others are posting they may have hunted from the Blue Mesa Reservoir. I saw good bucks but not in that number although I did take a good buck. Oh well good luck -

What bucks we saw were scattered all across the unit last season, but the majority were young. Up high just seemed to have higher concentrations of deer with bucks coming and going from private. We saw 3 decent bucks (one 30" deer on his last leg, his 4 was a 10" spur point) coming out of private to feed late evenings while scouting toward the south end, but before season someone set up their camper right where they were crossing fence and they quit showing up.
