I have 15 pp for deer in Colorado and wanted to pick brains of some of the experience here..Topgun sent me..I am 55 years young and think it is time in 2011 to cash in for a good buck.I hunt archery, muzzy,or rifle..prefer muzzy. Also have 17 for elk,can do one or the other first then do the other..it is time if you know what I mean.Am in good shape and will give a season full of time trying as I know how important this Is.What are good units as far as hunt and horn quality to best use these points? How is 61 shaking out this year..I am considering that for elk then deer or vice a versa.Any other units???Any help apreciated as this will be a solo affair and a one time forever deal..JAC

my dad hunted 61 elk muzzle loader in 2009 and shot a 330 class elk. he had awsome hunt, saw lots of elk in the 300 to 320 range every day! He was 50 when he hunted 61. Good access and said he would reccomend it for muzzy or bow. With 17 points not sure if you will be able to draw 61 muzzy, but bow you would have no problem. Im asuming you are a non-resident? For deer Ive heard unit 21 3rd season is great.

4th season unit 10 deer/3rd season 21. My specialty is elk in areas 2/10. I'd really advise you too cash your hard in points into a unit 2 or 10 muzzy tag. I know these areas extremely well and would be willing to help. I've helped with multiple hunts now and the smallest bull we've taken has been a 327 and the largest has been a 372. I honestly believe that you will not have the chance at that caliber of bull in area 61. PM if you're interested. I also spend alot of time in 10/21 chasing deer and can help you there too.

Didn't catch if you were a Co res or nonres... With 17 PP you are a shoe in for a 2/10 muzzy tag. As a non res you're looking at another 3 plus years to draw

trying to find out about the deer in 61 as I may give it a shot at muzzy..Are there anyone with photos dead or alive of some..I looked at some outfitters sights but I would prefer some regular guys that did well..Are there quite a few deer to pick over if I am patient ..Are the deer in 61 with good genetics? Any help apreciated with this...thanks JAC

The genetics in 61 for deer are excellent. The success rate is high and the deer numbers are high. It can be an easy hunt in the late season as the deer move down into the cedars, but there are a few private issues down lower. 61 has produced some absolute monsters recently, but it's also been hyped up by the fools which has caused substantial point creep. Jason Carter and Adam Bronsen both killed toads in there a few years back and, after the hard winter of 07/08, it became one of their top picks. With a muzzleloader you will be hunting the higher country (up to about 9000 ft at the divide) in some thick cover. The deer are a little harder to locate but the hunt will still be great if you get out and glass.

You have a ton of points there, in my opinion I hope you are not trying to use them in the same year??? Maybe circumstances are dictating that but I hope not. Use the deer points this year and then wait till next year to start trying for the NW corner.
To me that would be a lot of STRESS to give enough credit for both of those tags in one fall/season.

Mtnmn--The more I delve into this stuff. taht advice is what I am looking at..Deer this year only and to find out an elk area later year...I hope i last as well (knees hurt).I am sure I will be fine and I think I might try bow...any thoughts?? thanks JAC

Used my 15 points in Eastern CO last year on a guided hunt and it was amazing. If you want to go guided I can give you some contact info. Flat land, easier hunt, tons of deer. Shot a buck that broken up scored 205 7/8 would have been around 217 unbroken.

JAC,

Have you considered thinking outside of the box (oh wait.....I mean hype)? There is a whole wide world out there.

What size of buck are you looking for? What are your expectations of your hunt? Do you enjoy hunting the fairly open lower PJ/sagebrush/rimrock country? Care to be away from other hunters?

Answer these....and I may throw you a suggestion according to your goals.

+1

Go hunt Private Ground with a guide, the best guided hunts are better than most public land free for alls. If you've waited that long for a deer tag make the most of it.
