I have 9 points for Mule Deer in Colorado. I am a Non-Resident. What do you think I should apply for this year for 180+ bucks? Thanks in advance for all replies.

Perhaps a little more information?

Other then "180+ bucks" what do you look for in a hunt? 180 bucks can be found in almost all units in Colorado. From 6000-14000 feet in elevation. From August until mid/late November. And that is only in the western part of the state. Go east and you could be hunting the plains for monster bucks on private ground. Give us something to work with and you may get a suggestion that actually means something.

Thanks for the suggestion 'velvetmonster'. Sometimes you can't get what you want but here is the list:

I want a self-guided hunt with Lower tag numbers available in the unit.
Public Ground
3rd or 4th season Rifle
I like to walk and glass. Using a quad or truck is optional but not as challenging to me as hiking and glassing, but I would use the vehicles if need be to help get me where I need to be to walk-in.

I archery and muzzleloader hunt too however I would prefer Rifle in Colorado.

180+ Typical and 200+ Non-Typical Mule Deer

Make sure you consider the OTC elk hunters in your unit not just the deer tag numbers. We hunted a unit that only had 100 buck tags last year but 5 times that in elk hunters at least. Something to consider, sorry I have no advice on a unit for 9 points unless you could draw 63 4th season thatwould be a good one I think. nwhunter

9 points will get you 3rd season on most of the Gunnison units. The herd hasn't bounced back yet but there are still some mature bucks. I think 180 is doable but it will require some work. You can also get a 70 4th or a 68 4th with those points. The more people I talk to about CO the more varied the responses. I know a couple guys that did great in 70 and 54, a bunch of ohter guys that just plain never saw a decent buck in the same units.

Any of the fourth season hunts will have extemely limited tag numbers and most will have no coinciding elk hunt. Be aware that these 4th season hunts in many instances also come with private issues down low. The suggestion for 61 3rd isn't a bad thought. I have another suggestion but will send via pm.

Northwest makes a good point. I would worry a LOT more about the elk hunters than the deer hunters. They made things really tough on me on my 62 muzz hunt. Either hunt a unit that is a draw for elk too, or one that has some good deer country far from the road. Most otc elk hunters dont get too far from the truck in my experience.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-26-11 AT 05:26PM (MST)[p]Don't waste your points on 21, unless you're willing to lower your standards by 30"-40".

GrizlyHunter: I take it you hunted 21 with higher expectations? I scouted it once and didn't bring up any big bucks, but that is not to say they aren't there.

doesnt unit 21 take 16 or 17 points to draw as anon-res? I have heard that 21 is the best mule deer hunt in state, is there really no big bucks there?

Ive heard unit 66 3rd season was good.
