I helped my cousin on a deer hunt in Utah this last season, and my buddy just finished mounting it for him. He told me to post it up, so we could see what everybody thought.

Yeah the tear ducts are a little off but I think overall if this guy is new to taxidermy its not a bad job. I would hang that deer on my wall and be proud of it.

jmo.

sweet buck, and i have seen far worse mounts out their that guys have paid BIG money to have done. tell your buddy good job. every deer he does he will only get better

After reading what was said about this deers tear ducts, I got to thinking about what they actually looked like in the field photos. So I pulled up some of them, and I dont think the mount looks much different than the field photo, maybe the coloring is a little off. Any other comments would be appreciated, I am sure he would appreciate the constructive critasizm, as it can only make him better at what he does.

addicthunter,

I would say from the photo's that the tear ducts may just be a little bit too dark, in the kill shot they look more chocolate brown, and the mount they look more black.

But as I said above I personally think its a pretty damn good job for a new taxidermist. I think as he tweaks some small details hell be producing great mounts.

I think the mount looks a helluva lot better then the taxidermist I recently used that claims to have been doing it, for like 20 years. New to Southern Idaho, I tried a fella in Burley Idaho. Detail looked good, but he used a form the size of a pencil (or smaller) and when he stretched the cape on, the ears on the mount are now somewhere mid neck. Its Hilarious. Good thing tho....2 guys that relocated with me that also shot good bucks that year, got the same type mount back. So atleast he is consistant. Well one guys, his ears were placed up inside the frame of the antlers, so he kinda looks like a you just got the attention of a mule with his ears up and forward looking at you......freakin hilarious.

It a nice job for being a starter, He has the skills to get better and become a good taxi IMO. Like the Buck.

Actually, there should be no color around the tear ducts, because it should be hair to hair. The transition going into it, yes.

It looks nice but I think the forehead is too flat and wide?? It's more the issue of the mold then the actual taxidermy work.
Just my 2 cents....

Looks great! Congrats on a nice buck and a sweet mount.
I have over 40 animals mounted in my house and I'm still not skilled enough to give an opinion.

I think your buddy did a great job.
Compared to the picture it looks pretty close to the same coloring.

Thanks for all the opinions. I can pick out several things that I need to improve on. I've only done maybe 5or 6 mounts so there is a ton of room for improvement, I guess there always will be. Please continue to let me know what you think so I can improve.
