Anyone else draw this for this year? I'm startin' up the research/scouting process, makin' some calls, and would like to compare notes if anyone is inclined- I'm gonna try and get up there later this month to meet some of the landowners and see some of that country.

Thx,

Doug

LAST EDITED ON Apr-30-12 AT 07:43PM (MST)[p]DougW---Do you realize that you are asking a question that only three other people in the entire country that drew that tag with you can answer? Good luck as from what I understand the public land in that small unit is real tough country and that most of the elk are on private property. The sooner you start looking over the country and preferably finding a private place you can hunt, the better off you will be, so good luck in finding what you need to have a good hunt.

Actually there are dozens of WY residents who drew. I look at limited access as a challenge: if you get on the right place the bulls are bigger. And not necessarily a fully-guided-or-nothing situation. It helps to live nearby......and Wyoming is always a great place to hunt. You don't have to wait 10 years between elk hunts to have a great one, IMHO.

LAST EDITED ON May-02-12 AT 12:59PM (MST)[p]Best way to meet landowners up that way is to bring yer check book. You'll have all the friends you want...

"Actually there are dozens of WY residents who drew."

***I don't know how you couod make that statement when the resident application period just opened yesterday and the draw for them isn't until the latter part of June. There were 33 resident tags issued for unit 2 last year, so the "dozens" of tags you mention would be less than 3, when talking about last year. Have fun and I hope you find a good place and get a good bull!

TG is retired and has nothing better to do than get on the web and b%tch about most everyone elses opinons and thoughts. Thats OK though he has hunted the west side of the Bighorns for the last 10 years and also has the Wyoming CD to arm himself with everything he needs to know about the states hunting. Just ask and he'll be there to let you know!

Hate to disappoint you guys but there are plenty of nice folks up in that area, including landowners.

My cousins wife's grandparents got 60,000 acres in the unit. they let imiediate family only inn, and their nighbors have the largest ranch in the area and charge an arm and a leg to hunt. great area for big muleys and elk if you have deep enough pockets. or own a chute plane

LAST EDITED ON May-02-12 AT 08:35PM (MST)[p]Mulecreek---Let what go! All I stated was a couple facts and there was no arguing whatsoever. See the other post by a Wyoming resident about when the resident draw is held!

270WE---Bite me, as I haven't seen you put up one helpful post anywhere, but you're real good at putting me down! Nothing I said above is any different than comments made by other members, so why not make some smartazz comments to them too? PS: How many animals have you been involved in taking the last 10 or 15 years? Sorry, but I won't apologize for being retired and having the time to be on the web this time of the year or for taking that 11 week, 4 state hunting trip like I did last year!

DougW--- I don't think any of us said that people aren't friendly up there. Maybe you will be able to find some good spots and for little or no money out of your pocket. I hope so and good luck to you!

The Floyd's and Hayden's let folks on Fort creek via their property.....for free I've heard....but only after the 1st few days/week of elk season are complete. Also talk to Heather from WYF&G....she knows that area like the back of her hand. She flys that unit doing elk counts during the winter. She also knows the Rochelle's real well too, but I think she just transfered to another region recently.

All in all, not many elk, and tough country to access. I have to believe there's a 350" bull in that steep country somewhere...especially after the rut winds down, and they seek little hiding spots. Also, I think some of that gas country is now considered a wilderness, so double check the rules associated with that.

It will be a fun hunt if you get way back into Fort creek, and some of the other drainages, spike out, live back there for a week straight, get up early, watch the elk, and try and find a big one. Heather says the biggest bulls dig into the thickest/steepest slopes and when she's flying that country with her radio collar tracking system, she can identify where the animals are at, but can never see them. Sounds like a fun wilderness style backpack hunt to me. But a 6 miles pack out.

When I hunted it the access was controled by the area landowners and they didn't allow any pre season scouting and hunters don't get in the hills until opening day. The landowners were nice folks but I suspect they get tired of all the tag holders trying to go in early and out compete others, and Im sure they hear the same questions over and over again.

Hey crcountry- just following up to say thanks for the advice, and there was a 350 bull up there and yes, Heather was right, he was in the thick cedars.

A fun hunt-

Hope things are going well in your hunts this year-

Doug

sure did and it was the hunt of a lifetime.

HOpe your hunts are going well ETaken-

Hey Doug-
So what happened? There's not many secrets to Fort creek from what I gather, it has an easy NR tag draw, decent private land access, so lets hear it!! Did you end up staying in there and camping for a few days? Everyone says it's steep/rough country, but I dont buy that theory one bit...6-7k' with rolling hills?!?...It doesn't look bad on google earth either, and the elevation changes don;t look bad at all. I'm dying to hear about this hunt. I'm personally waiting on other WY opportunities with our max points, but this place has always intrigued me.

Give me a ring, cause I have a question/theory for you. I've never stepped foot in that unit, but I'm hearing intel about the mule deer living in there. We went to Unit 52/NM this year for a MZ elk hunt and had a whopper of a good time. I took my best ever and my buddy took a respectable 5x5.
Thxs-

Mike

Mike-yep. Chk ur email later. No mt for me,how 'bout u? I may get a day
Or 2 for deer down here if it snows. Keep me updated and thx

So DougW, why not post up? You were on here begging for info. Imagine you got a bunch of pm's which is what I usually get. Funny how no one ever wants to post up how they did or add a photo. Its like some of these areas are top secret or something...

Yep, I agree, everyone is eager for info but not quite so eager to share. Congrats Doug. Sounds like you must have had a good hunt.

TripleBB - The only begging going on is you asking for a pic.

If you've got a few minutes give me a call, we can chat...

Doug beat the odds and trust me he nailed a great bull.
Could not have happend to a nicer guy in my opinion.
Congrats again Doug on a bruiser bull.
Best,
Jerry

That is one dandy bull ya got Doug!

I don't have a problem with ya being tight lipped about your hunt at all.

I have been on 2-3 hunt sites for years and never posted a photo----

No problem with sending them out via Email though.

Robb

Robb- thx man, my thoughts exactly. Anyone who wants to call or email one-on-one....fine let's do it. That sifts through about 90% of the BS. Funny how that works.

Jerry- thx but you busted your a%$#s a LOT harder than I did. Years of work in your case....it gives all of us incentive. A classic elk story.
