Looks like i was hit for $40 more then I was expecting for a deer tag. Any advice on where to start scouting this unit would be greatly appreciated. I've never been down there, I put in with 2 points thinking it was a long shot, but I might as well put in for a tag worth having. Its the archery tag by the way. Thanks in advance for any pm's on where to start looking.

Clear out on top! Get off the main roads and spend some time behind some good optics. You'll find a wallhanger. Pm me I can give you some more info if you want.

LAST EDITED ON May-24-11 AT 09:13PM (MST)[p]Woody,

I also am the lucky recipient of an archery books tag. I would be happy to share info as the summer goes on and I get some time to head up there. I grew up hunting the books archery and have hunted there once since it changed to LE. We're in for a fun hunt with a ton of bucks...we just need to set our standards and stick to our guns.

Previous advice is golden...start high on the divide road and branch out from there. 30+ miles along that divide and hundreds of baby bucks to pass up. I spoke to a CO and was told the winter was just fine with little to no winter kill and the moisture this spring should mean great antler growth.

Me too, me too..

but it took 11 years as a non-res to get it...ouch!!!!

We got any weapon with 12. i haven't hunted the books since it was over the counter and 3 pt. or better. Me and my Dad will be down there for the rifle hunt. good luck archery guys!

Archery here for me as well guys. Burned 7 to get it. We need to keep in touch and share some info. My neighbor was a Fish Cop in Vernal for the last 20 or so years and said he was willing to go over some maps with me. I also have not hunted it since way back when it was three point or better.

I was hit for the $463.00 non resident muzzleloader tag on the 17th. You should have a credit card hit by now. Good luck!

YD, what weapon will you be using?
From I80, head south to Roosevelt ut, from there go to Ouray, follow that to seep ridge road..... and poof you are there. The area is Huge, it will be a great hunt. I just looked, my points are still growing so I wont be hunting down there.

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

WANT TO ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE, SEE THE SUNSETS, LOOK AT A LOT OF DEER, & ENJOY THE CAMPFIRE, & PARTAKE IN A BREWSKI OR TWO. THANKS FOR THE HELP......HOPE YOU DRAW......YD.

KAWBOY.......WOOOOOPS, I MEANT TO SAY FROM I-70 OUT OF THE GREEN RIVER AREA.......MY BAD.....THANKS AGAIN.......YD.

Here's a couple Book Cliffs deer to get you a bit excited:

Here's a 2009 Rifle buck. This buck was kind of an accident. My uncle spotted him layin up under a cedar. The deer had his head up in the cedar and all that was visible were his fronts, heavy bases and eye guards. As they had seen a great 4-point not 10 minutes earlier, he thought this must be him. He's still a mature deer, and looks great, though he was not the anticipated buck.

The 2nd one here is a 2010 Muzzy buck. He was a last day buck as they had been chasing a couple other slightly better bucks. But when this guy showed up their last day hunting, there was no passing him up.

These pics are obviously in the taxi's home... The muzzy buck is now hanging next to his 'twin brother' from a 2004 Book Cliffs hunt... Seriously, shot in the same canyon even...

I have not spent much time down from the south side. Sorry I am not much help that way. But if you decide to attack it from the north I might be able to help you out a little. here is a pic of the buck I helped my father in law get down there in 2009.
He is 29 7/8 wide. Almost made it to 30. But when he shot him I was only thinking 26. Just a cool buck.

THANKS.....KAWBOY,JUSTR86, & BROWNINGRAGE FOR THE DIRECTIONS & BUCK PICS.....I DO APPRECIATE THE HELP. SEEMS LIKE THE BEST WAY TO GET IN THERE IS THE SEEP R. ROAD FROM THE NORTH.....HOPE YOU ALL GET DRAWN...............THANKS AGAIN.........YD.

Yukon.... The sunsets are great in the Books, but the night sky is amazing. This year there will be very little moonlight while you are there. Be sure to go out after dark and check out the star show. Years ago (long time ago) we actually saw the northern lights about 3am when were out there.

TRIX......THANKS, I WILL BE SURE TO DO THAT.....SOUNDS PRETTY COOL & SOMETHING TO DO WHILE DRINKIN A BREWSKI. I ENJOY A GOOD CAMP ALL MOST AS MUCH AS A GOOD BUCK HUNT, THROW IN A CAMP FIRE & WE GOT IT MADE.......THANKS AGAIN.........YD.

This is the best video of a Book Cliffs hunt I have seen- and it's archery...
