Nevada PIW Deer Tage

My buddy drew the Nevada PIW mule deer tag which allows him to hunt almost any open deer season in Nevada. This is the first trophy tag he has ever had. Any recommendations which units he should focus on?

LAST EDITED ON May-28-11 AT 03:38PM (MST)[p]Start doing some research by talking to guides in the different trophy areas .As well ,game biologist throughout the state are a wealth of info .

Where does he live? How much time does he have? How much can he afford to spend (and I don't mean on a guide)? What are his expectations? A tag like that could weigh on a guy if he takes it too serious. He could spend a lot of time and money chasing rumors. If I drew it I'd probably hunt two or three areas I've always wanted to hunt rather than running all over. I'd also try to set realistic expectations and shoot when I saw that kind of buck and not be second guessing on the rumors. Just my 2 cents.

I'll be damned. NVB actually gave some decent advice in response to a hunter's question. Thought i'd never see the day. lol

I'd find out where Randy Ulmer has been getting his! Couldn't be too far wrong unless he has only hunting private land.

Here's a PIW buck from last year that a couple of non residents brought back home. Best advice......get away from the roads on foot and set up a base camp to hunt from. We had a base camp 1.5 miles in and killed this buck another 2 miles past our camp. This was not in a wilderness area. The walk from the truck to where this buck was killed would have taken over 3 hours each way due to how rough and steep it was. Because of this distance and roughness we never saw another hunter and ended up taking with this guy at 35 yards with a muzzle loader.

If you're looking for specific units, look at the ones with the longest draw odds.

If it was my tag, I would hunt every season I could, as much as i could. If I didn't get it done I'd be on the Kali border come Xmas.

Thanks for the replys and advice. We both live in Idaho in the Boise area. We are trying to get an idea what units guys would hunt if they drew this tag. Getting away from people is the norm for us up here so we would expect the same down there. Have looked at the draw odds and have some units in mind but always open to other areas to take a look at.

NVB has the best advice here.

My dad had this tag a few years ago and we hunted 6,22 and the late hunt in 194,196 (which we hated just a personal preference).

Hunt hard and as much as you can but be realistic and don't forget to have fun. The pressure of a tag like this will have you chasing your tail if you don't trust your research.

Look out Forkie, FTW is watching us!

I had this tag in 2008, and my best advise is stick to an area and find one that is a trophy in your eyes. Eveyone you tell you have this tag will tell you where the monsters are, haha. Have fun, awesome tag to have!
