I drew this tag and was wondering if anyone could comment about the unit and hunt. Is a 180 class buck a reasonable goal? This is my first chance at a rifle hunt for a velvet buck.

Don't care if they are in the velvet or hard horned, I'll be on 43 with a smoke pole, and one's goin down in the high country. The kid is headed to Colorado once again.

I hunted Colorado muzzy last year on a different unit, but I would say they were half velvet and half hard horn. We saw a half dozen strip in the four days we were there.

180 inch buck is doable. See bucks in there of that caliber year in and year out. Its half/half on velvet bucks typically. Most of them are running around with shredded velvet hanging off their antlers come the early part of september. Can be a super hunt, and have seen lots of good bucks get taken out of there on that tag. Guys whom go the extra mile and are willing to get up into the nasty steep country are the ones who kill the big bucks in 43. One of the most physically demanding places to hunt I've found. Lots of vertical elevation to cover and the deer live like goats up there.

Big Gog, Well we didn't get drawn, 20 pts and a NO NO. Guess we'll hope for next year. Thanks again for any help in advance....Tom

You have a great tag! From what I hear, a 180 is doable if you have some luck and lots of leg and lung. Either way, one of the most beautiful places on earth.
