Death on Santa Rosa

I am really curious to know who is aware and what your thoughts are on the final extermination of all the GREAT muleys and elk on Santa Rosa Island which is to be completed by the end of this year?

I would hope that someone is doing an expose' on this to show everyone in the country just what is going on there. It's a real ethical travesty IMO.I guarantee you those behind this are way more concerned about stopping hunting there than they are about returning the island to it's original state before muleys and elk were introduced.

I dont believe anyone is doing an expose' on this travesty nor do I belive many people are really aware of what our government is doing with our wildlife there. What the nature conservancy really has in mind is beyond me but I cant believe any visitors to the island would not want to see these animals alive. To a hunter it is a wealth of two hundred inch bucks and to the average public it is natures beauty in wildlife! Dont know if there is but I wish there was a way to stop this slaughter-does the public know that they shoot and let lay? Where is the Fish and Game on the waste of meat law?

Very sad deal and I hate to see it but it's a done deal I think.

They missed an opportunity IMO as they might have been able to capture and transfer these studs to some areas of need. And before all the negative comments of cost effectiveness and lack of success roll in I already know those opinions and offer this. In some areas of almost every western state we cannot afford NOT to start re-introduction IMO and as for success well it worked pretty good in putting them out there. JMHO

The other thing they may have considered is selling tags to disabled hunters or youth hunters and let them finish the herds and get something out of it other than the cleansing the island of these non-native devils.

Look out Forkie, FTW is watching us!

An inexcusable destruction and wanton waste of a precious natural resource that defies reason and logic. What a crying shame.

Appleman,

Have you hunted on the island? The deer and elk are privately owned, much like game ranches for elk in the U.S. and Canada.
The animals are not of the "we" and "our". They are PRIVATE PROPERTY. The hunts do not require a hunting license or deer tag from California and the herd is not subject to any F&G regulations. This has been an upcoming tragedy in the making for YEARS. Everyone involved has known the consequences for YEARS.

My question to any F&G departments around the country is this, you come up with all kinds of excuses not to accept or transfer these deer and elk to your states. Would you also refuse say desert sheep from Tibiron Island? Carmen Island? Elk transplants from Arizona or British Columbia, Utah or Nevada?

My question to the elk and mule deer property owners of Santa Rosa Island, why slaughter them? Sell them, let others hunt them, donate hunts to armed service members, junior hunts, disabled hunts??

All involved are at fault, some though, have been compensated quite nicely for the outcome.

They also have "slaughtered" mule deer does every year after the paid buck hunts so this is nothing new.

Those deer are from the kaibab, its all B,S where are all the big Dollar boys, you know the guys that buy those hunts from Moss and the like's and those strip tags for $100,000.00 and more why don't you really do something with your $$$,$$$.$$...

in this era of low deer #'s just about in every state, what a travesty need I say more....BS

If this extermination actually happens, and it looks like it will, then the only good thing that is going to come out of it is setting the precedent about exterminating NON-native wildlife from their historic range, like wild horses and burros from much of the west where they've gone unmanaged for many decades. I'm NOT at all in favor of extermination, but wholeheartedly support scientific management, not bleeding heart liberal NON-management. Also, extermination of these deer and elk will set a precedent as relates to NON-native wolves across the west. That will be a very tough row to hoe, but a logical arguement will be able to be made, and advocates can point to Santa Rosa and how Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer were a driving force behind the extermination of these majestic animals.

Good points, but I doubt it, you know how hypocritical the lefties are

The hunting program ends mid-October at which time the Park Service's agreement with an extermination company from the east coast will be in force and the deer and elk on Santa Rosa will be a thing of the past shortly thereafter. Thanks Boxer and Feinstein!

This is the first I have heard of this and smoke started coming from my ears as I read the link that was posted. I live in southern utah where we have thousands upon thousands of acres set aside for the non-native desert tortoise. I'm certainly no game manager but these kinds of things make me crazy.

It is a sad situation indeed. I live very close to Santa Rosa and have seen many pics of the deer and elk. A few buddies are scheduled to hunt the island this year and its sad it wont be around anymore. What really doesn't make sense is why hire a private contractor and spend thousands of dollars. Why not make it a special draw and let hunters do their part. They could make money instead of wasting more of it. Another thing I don't understand is the island of Catalina had a hunt to remove deer because they were non native. Although they are leaving all the Buffalo.

Well as it was said above, when does the wild horse and donky season open up here in Oregon and Nevada for non-indiginouse wildlife. A damn shame if they go through with it. JB

I know a guy that is going on a hunt at Santa Rosa Island in August, he said the price is $10,000 for an unlimited deer and elk hunt.

With all the extra money California has floating around, they can for sure afford to do this in these wonderful financial times. No wonder they are in the situation they are in.

I have been on two hunts on the island, including one hunt last November. The land and therefore animals are private property of the National Park Service and have been for 25 years when the NPS forced the family to sell the island or eminent domain would take it away. The contract clause was that hunting could continue and be managed by the family until December 31st 2011 when all must be gone to restore the island to its natural ways. The Nose will not change and will not modernize. Sadly sight. What a beauty it was.
