Deer Patterns

What are your guys' thoughts on deer patterns early October on the North Slope? What are the patterns of the bucks during this time of year?
Going back in my mind I think I can account for just about every scenario possible, except full blown rut activity.

Early Oct huh?
Well, their antlers are hard, the feed in the open is either dried or frozen, they are preserving energy for the upcoming rut and the weather is usually still a bit warm.
Hunt early morning and late evening. I doubt you'll see much mid-day movement. Hunt the edges since the deer don't need to or want to stay in the openings for long. Unless you get big weather the deer will move very little.

As for the N slopes, I has never hunted deer there so I'm not your expert. I suspect they will respond to conditions like they do in other areas in UT.

Good luck, Zeke

It's a tough time to hunt the N. Slope. Have hunted the muzzy hunt over there in both northern and northeastern regions for a long time. It's the most beautiful country there is that time of year. There are few deer though. Zeke's assessment would appear to be very accurate from what I've experienced.

It will also depend on which area you are hunting. There are different patterns between hunting the Bear River, or Henry's Fork, or Spirit lake, or Long's Park Dam, or going over by Red Canyon and Flaming Gorge, all the way around to Red Cloud Loop... The terrain changes and so do the deer's habits... Plus you're talking about a N. Slope that is some 80 miles long...

But like I said, we usually hunt it more for the love of the country rather than for trophy deer...
