Fawn Survival

At what age is a fawn capable of being self sustaining? I see early doe/fawn hunts in various states and some of these take place rather early like August and September. If the doe is harvested will the fawn survive? Or have we now just killed 2 animals due to the inmaturity of the fawn?

They can survive on their own at a very young age. We had a doe get hit by a car near our house once and the fawn stayed there until fall. It was born around the 1st of June and the doe was killed around the 4th of July. It was growing and normal till it left.

Deer and elk wean their little ones at about 8 weeks of age and after that they can pretty well get along by themsleves if the have to.

Seems awful quick but I couldn't image the state wildlife agencies being so stupid by offering a season which might jeopardize the fawns. Thanks.

Nevada's cow elk archery hunts start on August 1st every year. I have been told by biologists that once an animal looses its spots, it is essentially weaned. For birds, "if they fly they can die."
