Here is a short little story of the buck we called PEE WEE.
Lots of scouting time was spent and we thought it was time to get serious.
So the season finally comes around. We knew there would be a lot of people, so opening morning we set out hiking at 3:30 am to get to the ground blind that we had made. We got there by 5:15. The 3 of us spread out to a few different spots and sat and waited which seemed like for ever. FINALLY the sun comes up and Pee Wee and the other buck that he was always with was a no show. The other buck we call Old Crapper. He has a GIANT body with TONS of Mass but only a 3 point. His body is bigger that Pee Wee.
So with a no show for the 1st time out of 15-20 scouting trips, we got a little nervous. We headed out and hit another area that we had seen some deer in.
Well, fast forward to Monday morning. Hawkeye and I headed out again to Pee Wee ?play house?. Dryflyelk had a migraine and was unable to join us. Well, we get to our spot by 6:15 and don't see any of the deer we wanted to go after. By 8 am we packed up and just started to leave when Hawkeye hits me in the chest and says ?there he is, SIT DOWN?. So we did. We glassed him for a few minutes and watched Old Crapper and Pee Wee bed down at 8:20. I tell Hawkeye to do the stalk since he is the one that spotted him. So he takes off. Well, 1.5 hrs later, he is in position. Step by step, I was watching from 350 yards away as he crept in. From where I was it looked to be 30 yards. All at once, they jumped and bolted running right at me. I grabbed the old Hoyt Katera, knocked an arrow and waited. I had been on the phone with Dryflyelk giving him play by play. I forgot to hang up with him and had the phone in the pocket. Hawkeye?s watching and I am waiting to see where they are. I look over at Hawkeye and he is going crazy pointing down and to the other side. I look over and over the hump comes Old Crapper. I did not have time to range since I was now standing in the wide open. I drew back and waited for a few seconds and I see antlers coming over the hump. He was walking up and to my left. I put the 50 yard pin on him and let it fly. WHACK!! Drilled him. I am jumping up and down binos hitting me in the face. What took Hawkeye 1.5 hours to get over there took him 10 minutes to get back. We sat down and drank some water, Talked with Dryflyelk, (which dropped everything and came to help) and started after eternity, but was only about 40 minutes.
No blood for a bit, finally, blood, more blood, then no blood, then more blood. I thought that he was going to be there any second piled up. He is going down hill. After 1.5 hous, Dryfly shows up with food and beverage. We partook, regrouped and followed some more. 6 hours later we have little blood after pools of blood here and there. Dryfly?s migraine had come back, heat exaution has now set in on all of us. No water, 85 degrees. So we head out, marked our last spot and headed home.
Talk about an extreme HIGH to LOW. I had to work Tuesday but was like a Zombie. No concentration what so ever. I tried to round up some troops to head out, but with short notice and all had lot of obligations, I felt like I had to get out there. So I loaded up and started at it again by 5 pm. Got to the last area I remember and found my last mark. Started off again and with in minutes and 50 yards, THERE HE WAS. Under a tree on his side. Hawkeye was in meetings and Dryfly was working. They bother dropped everything and skipped the rest of their obligations and came running. I caped him out, since he was bloated and the meet was bad. STUNK to HI HELL. Put him in my pack and headed down the mountain. Somehow Dryfly and Hawkeye were there in NO TIME. They met me down the hill a ways and the excitement started (again for me). They helped me the rest of the way down.
I have to GIVE A HUGE THANKS TO HAWKEYE (Jason) and DRYFLYELK (Ben) for all their help and time scouting and packing and glassing and tracking and everything else they did. Words don't say enough. And a thanks to my wife and kids for letting me follow my passion of hunting. My kids and I are very sad that there will be no jerky, but I still have an antelope tag and an elk tag.
He scores 175 with only 3 inches of deductions to score 172 net. He has an inside spread of 19 inches. His teeth were completely gone. It's my 1st bow kill and biggest buck ever. 33 years old and LOTS of hunting and I finally get a big buck!!!
PICS COMING SOON!!!
