Just returned from an awesome hunt out on the Vernon. Hunted nine days, scouted ten days, set a goal for myself of 180? plus. On day nine I spotted this buck bedded at about 10:00 am. I had seen this buck a number of times and knew instantly it was him. I had actually passed on a stalking opportunity for him on the second day, electing to keep looking. I wasn?t quite sure he'd make 180? then, but on day nine, still not sure he was quite 180?, I was ready to find out using a tape measure. Ha, ha.
At 11:15 I had stalked to within 35 yards of the bedded buck and was getting as comfy as possible on a rock in the 90 degree heat and blazing sun. I planned to wait him out no matter what. Luckily he only made me wait 45 minutes before the sun got to him as well. He stood up broadside and cleared the brush. I turned the arrow loose and 15 seconds later watched him do the wobbly dance and tip over. I was a picture perfect stalk, just like they write ?em in the magazines. And, for those of you wondering, turns out he does reach my goal after all. 183? gross, my best scoring archery buck to date.
Thanks to my wife for dealing with the kids on her own for the last...long time. Thanks to Austin for all the luck and help spotting and packing. Thanks to Taylor for helping me get the tag, and thanks to all the guys in camp (Kody, Amy, Mike, Melissa, Shaun, Jake) for a great summer of scouting and hunting. What a blast.
