Bucks in Syracuse Utah

Sorry to start a new thread, I will get the hang of this. For those that care, I just wanted to clarify something. I have done a ton of research the last few days regarding hunting boundries and figured out the field where the big 9x10 buck is hiding out- I went there last night- I did not see him but I saw several other deer and a few nice bucks- These deer are not hanging out in Syracuse, they are actually in West Point, or at least the field they were in last night is in West Point. So unless West Point has changed their laws about hunting I think whoever is hunting them is perfectly legal if they have permission from the landowner. These bucks are really cool and as long as they are hunting legally, more power to them. If you get chance to see an urban buck like this one it is awesome. Hopefully they don't get him and he will be back next year even bigger and better. Sorry I don't have a pic, but I will be down there the next week or so with my camera and will post some when I see him. Thanks

I think the west point border is the field behind the hunters, and the field the bucks in the video clip were in was Syracuse.

Not jealous at all. Cool to see bucks like this living close to home. I have no problem with guys hunting bucks in the corn fields as long as its legal. If its not legal, then they are poaching, and poaching is not cool at all.

Yelum

He was there last night I watched him come out of the corn at about 7:50!! He is truly a great buck!! Would you just quit hunting if your first deer was that monster???

Actually, i looked up the field he was in, in the video that was posted and that field is in west point. It is actually the border. Acording to the city maps, everything west of 4000 and north of 1200 is not in syracuse city. syracuse actualy goes all the way to 4500 if you are south of 1200 north if that makes sense. I will shoot you a pm. I would like take my 3 year old out there tonight to show him what to start dreaming about.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-07-11 AT 02:59PM (MST)[p] LOL- and here I shot Muley77 a PM with what I found about that half-mile block so that I didn't put exact addresses out on the main thread... LOL...

As far as I'm concerned, Muley77 has put all the same info I found out here on the thread, so I don't need to elaborate anymore. He is right, it is a West Point buck most of the time. The only portion of that block that is in Syracuse is marked as "Unincorporated Lands" just like all of that west of 4500 West... Either way, he is legal to hunt.

I believe the young hunter is legal, and I know he has permission. Though, based on their hunting method, I don't see them getting this buck... I'd offer to help, but I kinda wanna see this buck for the next couple years if I can...

Maybe I'll see you guys down there this evening... I haven't gone in 5 days... Later

"Therefore, wo be unto him that is at ease in Zion!" 2 Ne. 28: 24

I'll be down there too..... I'm gonna invite everyone I know also. We'll just make it a MM party while someone is trying to hunt this "secret" spot. --y'all don't tell anyone though.....PM!

Thanks Browning Rage- I hope i didn't post too much info so as to bother those guys while they hunt- That would suck- I'll be out there tonight with my little boy-

Later

bamacpl,

Its no ''secret''hunting spot!! That little dirt road has been damn near a freeway since that deer showed up 8 or 10 weeks ago. Browning rage I am thinking you will be seeing that deer next year.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-07-11 AT 03:39PM (MST)[p]when I get in town ill show you all how a 150 yard shot can kill a buck. lol just kidding id like to get some video of him though!

I live in the neighborhood north of the cornfield. Everyone around here knows about the buck and watches it frequently. Unincorporated or not, I think it's pathetic that anyone is "hunting" this deer. No way Id take this thing even if I had permission to hunt the property. What would you tell people who saw it on your wall? Personally, I'd be more than ashamed telling people I shot it while multiple families watched the hunt from their back porch.

I couldn't agree with you more. It is awesome to see such a buck, and honestly not a challenge at all. I would rather take a great photo of him and have that on my wall and wait till next year and see his growth.

+1 ........ If it floats your boat, fine, but I wouldn't want to "hunt" there. Some guys see a big urban Buck and try to scheme any possible way to kill the thing. Are we really that desperate to kill it just because its big?

And I'm not all talk either.....I had a request from a family member this year to come shoot a nice 4 point with two other bucks that are eating his haystack. It is a legal area to hunt, but there are other houses around and I would have had to put a blind in his barn basically.... not for me, I love hunting, killing is a bonus.

I ended up shooting a smaller Buck, but worked hard and got more satisfaction than I would have if I was pulling a dead deer out from under a swing set...

Again, if it's legal, go for it. I just don't want to shoot a pet deer, no matter how big......

If he in a legal area, Enough said.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

The ethics police are at it again. Should I feel bad when I shoot this mulie I've been watching in the hills for two years and they start putting up ensalge and I arrow him on the way out of the hills? I'm sure he'll do it he has walked the same trail out of the hills for 2 years and they'll be cutting and piling in 3 weeks.

Bit different here. Substitute the words "neighborhood" and "sidewalk" for "hills" and "trail" in your story and we are talking the same thing.

I hunt private farmland once in a while, but not backyards.

Again, if it's legal and you like it, good for you. Hell, I'll grab my kid's radio flyer wagon and help you pack it down the sidewalk to your truck.

No ethics police here

Never hunter whitetails huh? Silly "holier than thou" boys.

I shot a deer while a chit-load of people were watching from across the canyon. Should I have been embarrassed for my kill?

You guys all have pix and pet names for your, soon to be dead, animals, but yet it's not alright for a kid to kill a deer in a cornfield?

Holy crap, I'd shoot him IF LEGAL.

Zeke

NO it is more ethical to shoot a deer with a beer in your hand on a trail on a fourwheeler lol. Wow let the kid hunt! I grew up on 4500 dont know the kid and dont care he is legal let him hunt and stop b!@##'n about it it is his right!

It sounds like this buck is certainly not an easy one to kill.
I tried to shoot 2 different bucks that lived near my home, and an elk...I could never connect on those wiley, live near people, sneaky things.

I hope that kid gets him.

But, NO ONE better shoot the buck I have on my trail camera for the last 3 years. I just love watching him. :)

It doesn't matter because it won't be long until West point changes their laws anyways- Besides today FREAKING UDOT posted their three alternatives of the Legacy Highway and if the idiot environmentalists and UDOT have their way the new highway will completely destroy 90 percent of all the agriculturally protected areas out there and then someone can shoot him while hundreds of people watch as they drive by on the freakin highway.

I just realized I misspoke. Not that anyone cares, but I live south of the field, not north. Ive sat on my neighbors deck before and watched him at length.

I love how people use the phrase "ethics police" as though that would hurt my feelings. Every single person on the planet polices ethics on a daily basis. Flipping someone off for cutting you off, griping about a brown noser at work, and getting pissed when someone saves a seat at a movie theater or being upset when someone cuts in a line are all examples of policing or criticizing an individuals ethics.

Your situation is far different than the one being spoken of here. I think it's pretty amazing when hunters take the time and effort to pattern an animal well enough to put yourself in a position to take it on opening day or some other time during the hunt. I wish I had the time and ability to do that. This situation is hardly patterning or scouting an animal.

As far as someone else asking about shooting an animal while other hunters are watching from the top of the canyon. . . should you feel bad about that? It depends, does the canyon you are hunting share a border with a neighborhood that has an HOA and a community pool? If not, then I suppose you are fine.

the funny thing about this whole thread is that everybody and their dog knows where this buck is now and guaranteed that this deer will be dead wether legal or illegal so good job guys why dont you try to keep some secrets to yoursel then you dont have to worry about others talking trash. i hope you get the buck if its legal and you did your homework good for you. but next time even if you know its legal keep it to yourself that way you dont have to deal with all this crap. SHOOT STRAIGHT and SMOKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you kidding me! This buck is no secret- There are tons of people that knew about him and watch him from their porches and cars every night before this thread began. I started this thread in hopes that people would go see him and also to make people aware that people are out trying to hunt him. It is really sketchy as to if it is legal or not to hunt in the area simply because of confusion surrounding the boundries of the cities out here. I have researched it a ton and wouldn't hunt him simply because I couldn't tell you which city it is in. If that deer gets shot and it was done illegally I sure as heck want watchful eyes out there so they can report it. This buck deserves as much protection as the ones up in the hills. If it is legal and they succeed they have nothing to worry about and more power to them. You better believe that every time I see a deer that big in an urban area I am calling my friends and telling them so they can go see him too. What is wrong with that? People with their cameras and binos have as much a right to be there and see him as do the hunters- It is not like they are hunting in an area where they can get away from it all and enjoy the peace and quiet of the mountains.

I live within a few hundred yards of where this buck is hanging out and last night I counted over 30 trucks/cars/SUV's between 7:30 and 8:30. Last summer we would rarely see anybody drive down that dirt road. Even a few months ago we would see only 2 or 3 vehicles a night drive down that road.

I now know where he is and could care less. Now it would be a different story if I had a friggin tag for that area. Do you think I could/should use my California tag on him.LO

If he don't get taken by a hunter would it be better for him to get hit by a car, Either way I say he's a dead deer.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

There was only 4 cars full time and 4 drive by's, not counting the police car.

30 is a bit of an exaggeration.

I'll admit- I feel some regret about even posting the video of this guy... Just wanted to share him with y'all, and let a few locals know where he was. Now everyone is getting worked up on here, when we should all just be appreciating the animal...

Maybe next year he'll be gone, and I'll be glad I got video of him. Whether it's a hunter, a car, a columbine, or old age- this deer will die in the next few years... just glad I got to see him...

It's sad we can't just appreciate the video, and the fact that this deer has lived in the area for so long... He's the biggest deer i've ever seen on the hoof, and the only one I've ever got on video that was anywhere near this big.

I hope when the archery season ends, everyone will simmer down. He'll still be there. They'll cut the corn, and he'll be gone. Then we'll all head to the hills for the muzzy and rifle hunts... The same cycle and situation plays out ALL OVER this state every year...

Anyway, just feelin disappointed in a few fellow MMers I guess... Hope y'all have good luck on your hunts. Hope all of you get a chance to see a deer like this, anywhere...

I thought your video was awesome, glad you shared it, this is my first time actually posting anything, i read all the time. I think your last post was right on, i probably got worked up a bit about some of the comments and over reacted a bit. I appreciate what you had to say. Thanks

I think a lot of it is perspective. When I was 16, 17, 18, I just wanted to kill a buck. I found a group of bucks living in a patch of oaks below some houses. The fact that it was hunting season is the only thing I considered. So As far as these kids are concerned, I know where their coming from.

Now at 50, I am past the need to kill, but still injoy the hunt. I love seeing big bucks and Its cool as heck when you have a buck of this calibar living close to home. An experienced bow hunter would have no problem killing this buck. He's easy to pattern. I get excited to see peoples success, thats why I come to this site.

If this kid or any other legally kills this buck, Good for him. But if the buck lives another year, then good for him too. Back East people hunt in their back yards all the time, we're just not use to to it here. But its coming. The deer here in these areas are growing and will cause problems, then the dwr will shoot them anyway.

This bickering and and words of jealousy on this thread would probably be alot different if someone posted pictures of a smaller buck they saw in city limits being hunted by someone. The conversations would probably go, "more power to them" "good luck to the hunter" "hope they get him". Instead the majority display jealousy in their words as they talk about a monster buck that should not be hunted. I don't agree with the hunting in city limits thing but if its leagal, who cares, let someone claim their "inches" prize and move on with life.

I agree, these kids are living the dream, leave them alone. Not everyone has the access or funds to a guide and outfiiter, or even have dads with unlimited time off. If anyone is going to kill him i hope it is a kid. It will mean more to him to kill this deer than the dude that "hunts" antelope island this year

When they came for the road hunters I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for the oppurtunists I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for the public land hunters I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for me there was no one left to say anything!
