LAST EDITED ON Sep-12-11 AT 08:12AM (MST)[p]Hey guys, I am headed up to Wyoming the first week of October with a mule deer tag. It will be myself and three buddies all who have never been to Wyoming and we will be hunting Region D. I know there are some other threads about this but I wanted to see if anyone had any good information about the area, what to expect and basically any suggestions for some first time hunters to this area. We were thinking about camping around Saratoga or Encampment. Anything help would be greatly appreciated!

Keep a clean camp, don't act like a bunch of jerks out on their own for the first time, and be respectful of that which is not yours and you should be OK.

Hopefully all your firearms are freshly sighted in and your group has adequate shooting abilities. Don't expect to see monster Wy muley bucks everywhere you look because you won't. Pay the most attention to where you are seeing deer. Sounds silly but a lot of hunters will drive right thru a concentration of animals only to hunt mostly barren country.

Lastly, put a very high priority of taking well care of any animals taken. Meat facilities are recommended if you plan to stay past a few days of a kill or the temps are abnormally warm. The rest is mostly just hunting and you'll find plenty of room to do that. Good luck!

I'd try to find a good vantage point. One that already isn't covered with orange and wait for something to come yer way. Last time I hunted down there 4 years ago, you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting another hunter...

Thanks Joey. We are always respectful to the land and definitely plan to keep a clean camp. We hope to have a great hunt and plan on making it a yearly trip. Thanks for all the great information!

Thanks. We sure hope it isn't that covered up...we are going to be there 10 days so we hope to find some good areas. Our plan is to get in further where hopefully there will be less orange.

We hunted it last year. We were south of encampment about 10-15 miles up the forest service road that meets the highway just west of town past the river. (can't remember the name of it off the top of my head. Beautiful country. Steep, by the way. This is what we learned:

Early October is awfully early for deer in there. Most likely you'll be hunting local deer. They are very scattered, but there are a few there. Some were in the lower, more open BLM country, saw some on the NF. Not sure one was better than the other as we saw deer in both areas. Big bucks were scarce. My guess is the ones that were there were holed up in the timber since it wasn't real cold.

Be careful of the bears. We had one in camp trying to get into our cooler when we came back one night. Luckily the cooler was bear proof. But it made sleeping a little more interesting knowing that there was a bear around that knew we had food. Take the necessary precautions. As the week went on, we found that the deer on the NF were traveling most just inside the aspens and timber near the tops of the fingers and ridges. We did catch a few out browsing early and late, but not a lot. The locals told us that that deer heard summers west of there over towards Baggs, and moves through when the snow starts flying. Maybe you guys will hit the weather right.

We never did go all the way to the lookout at the very top. If I went back, I would definitely check that area out, since the bucks weren't with the does at that time. Hopefully you guys have a great hunt. If you want specifics, send me a pm and I can try to give you the exact areas we were in. I know south of where we camped was the encampment wilderness study area.

BTW- we hunted the second week and did not see a ton of other hunters. Maybe that should've told us something ;-)

Best of Luck,

WH
