I know this buck doesn't even compare in size to many posted on here but he's my best buck to date and sealed the deal with a bow to make it that much better!
I found him, along with seven other bucks, bedded in a safflower field at about 8:30 yesterday morning. I watched them for awhile and saw the direction they were moving as they slowly fed towards the sagebrush hills. To make a long story short I took off running around the edge of the field and then belly crawled into the sage until I got to where I thought they would come out of the field. When I poked my head up and looked to see where they were everything was perfect. All 8 of them were feeding right towards me. The only problem was the 4-point (my buck) was furthest in the back so I knew that they would all have to pass me before I would have a chance at the bigger buck.
I slowly backed away from the edge and tucked myself up under a large sagebrush bush. I waited for about 10 minutes not being able to see the deer because of the angle I was at. All of a sudden I heard a sound to my right and there were two of the 2-points. I held still and watched as they came closer and closer...if they didn't stop they were going to run me over. I kid you not, the first two point actually came and started eating the sagebrush that I was hiding behind!! I could have reached 2 feet through the brush and grabbed him by the horns. After a few seconds he caught wind of me and took of running from my right to left. The other two point followed right behind him.
I hoped that somehow the rest of the bucks would follow the same path possibly giving me a shot. After a few seconds I looked back to my right and the 4-point was coming up out of the field. He started walking quickly and as I drew my bow he started to bound off. I stood up and whistled and he came to a dead stop. He was behind a bush that I had previously ranged at 55 yards so I knew about where he was yardage wise. I put my 60 yard pin where I wanted it and let it fly. I watched as the arrow smacked him. He jumped and bucked like a bull and then took off. I ran to my arrow and saw that it had blood on it but not as much as I'd hoped. The ground where he was standing had green, nasty smelling grass that I figured must have come from the guts...I had gut shot the deer! How could that have happened? I Thought the shot looked perfect. I looked for blood and nothing.
I sat down thinking about what to do next. I called a buddy and he ran out to help me track him. After about an hour we started moving in the direction of the buck. We finally saw him as he tried to slowly walk away from us. We could tell he was hit hard. After trying to catch up with him a couple times we decided it was best to leave him and let him bed down and die. When we came back later he wasn't 75 yards from where we left him. After inspection we saw that my arrow had hit right behind his front shoulder but was only about 3 inches up into the body. My arrow had barely cut one and maybe both of the lungs. Even in his death bed he didnt bleed at all.
Anyway sorry to ramble...I'm still pretty excited about it if you can't tell! So far this year I've taken a nice Tom and now this 4-point with my bow. If I can just seal the deal on a nice bull this weekend it will be an incredible archery year!
