Just got off the phone with my brother and he said hunting was the worst he's ever seen it in 20 years, real bad! He said,"the biggest buck he saw was 25 inches and he let it go hoping he would connect on something bigger". Compared to last year the amount of deer was cut in halve and they didn't see any older bucks. He mentioned it also rained most the days they were there which I'm sure didn't help their trip. This year didn't look good for Wyoming.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-20-11 AT 09:47PM (MST)[p]ITs only going to get worse. The herds will not rebound atleast not like we hope they will the Game and fish will make sure of it. They knew we lost most of our deer back in may thats almost 5 months before the gun season opens 5 months to change atleast something that might help the deer out a little. But we still have full length hunting season same amount of tags as always. I just dont understand there thinking its almost like they dont care

I was just in WY a few weeks ago on the archery hunt and we saw close to 75 deer everyday. About half were bucks, but we didn't see any monsters. The biggest was about a 25-26" 4 point. I will be heading back up in a few weeks to see if my step dad can get one with his rifle.

I also hunted H 2 years ago and it wasn't that great. We saw a decent amount of deer, but most the bucks were in the 17-20" range. The biggest ones we saw were ones that people had already killed.

When are we all going to finally get it that G and H are not great "slammer" units. Sure every year a few great bucks are taken and the trophy quality is ok but far from great. If anyone is surprised to find alot of hunters and a handful of 20" bucks then they have not been paying attention for the last 15 years. They were great units 20 years ago but those days are gone.

I will continue to hunt these regions because I love the area, I love to hunt and I still have a chance at a great trophy. However, I am not surprised when I see an overabundance of hunters and fewer bucks.

Bonepicker,

Thanks, my mistake. I take it all back, G and H are great units with no hunters and huge bucks in every basin. LOL

The story is still the same. Expect lots of other hunters at the opening and lower deer numbers.

Still a fun place to hunt and there is always a chance.

Not to stir the pot or make it sound like the herd/buck age class is great or anything but I personally witnessed to 30 inch bucks that ended up hitting the dirt the first couple days. I have video of one that is featured on the main page. Nothing monsterous but both bucks were 170-175 animals. I wasn't hunting, I was just along to help/ spot for a friend.

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

Every year there is going to be a few guys that kill deer and are going to be generally happy with the way the hunt went. However, I have hunted from South Wyoming to the North Western part of the state to Area 87 to help a buddy out, which hasn't opened yet but been scouting......all I can say is WOW!! We saw some bucks...nothing worth a darn. One thing we didn't see was number of deer. I don't have the answers but one thing is certain something needs to be done, its alarming the lack of deer in this state, almost scary. I lived in the Jackson Hole area for 7 years and went back up to the Greys River area with two buddies and did a 7 day pack hunt and saw maybe a total of 20 deer, two being pretty good bucks. In the southern area I went for four days and saw maybe 15 deer with the best being a forkie. If anyone claims that there is nothing wrong with the deer herds, they need to have there head examined or they didn't hunt in wyoming 10-15 years ago. It is certainly not looking good for the years to come, espically when the G and F continue to issue unlimited general tags. I went to the taxidermist yesterday, which is also the meat processor in Rawlins and all a guy has to do is look at the lack of animals in his shop. The local meat processor has already layed 75% of his meat cutters off due to lack of business. I love to hunt mule deer just as much as the next guy, big deer are my passion, but I will be doing my part the next few seasons. I will not be purchasing a deer tag until something changes. Earlier in the year I posted a link to a article that ran in the local newspaper in Rawlins about the mule deer and antelope herds, a couple weeks later the G and F ran another article claiming that they miss-counted the winter range deer and stated that the mule deer herd was in fact suffering and yet they did nothing "business as usual". I guess in the next three to five years we will all be paying for the over-hunting of wyoming's mule deer. I hope to god I am wrong but based on not only what I am seeing but 95% of everyone else is seeing the same thing. Please Wyoming G and F for the love of god...do something, try something at least. Like everyone else, just being out in the mountains is what its all about, and I have no problem not tagging a deer, but to me another big part of it is at least having the opportunity to see a good deer. Regardless of harvesting, shooting, or anything else I just want to see some bucks...... Its only going to get worse!!!! As long as WE stay "business as usual"!!!!!!!!
