Book Cliffs vs Vernon

I've hunted the Books with family so I know what to expect there, but not Vernon. Concerned only with a future archery hunt. Compare the two if you could please as far as quality and quantity of bucks is concerned. Also, how is the terrain different? Not sure if I want to keep waiting for the Books, or if I should just cash in and hunt Vernon.

I don't know either unit, but I personally am more interested in Vernon than Book Cliffs because of the number of other hunter on the mountain bowhunting. It seems like the archers with Vernon tags post bigger bucks on MM. I am sure there are more deer on the Book Cliffs, but quality I don't know past what I see online.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-24-11 AT 06:14PM (MST)[p]I drew vernon in 2010, turned in the tag, and then drew the bookies this year. In my opinion the Vernon may have slightly better potential for a big buck (190+), but, you really need to know the Vernon to find and kill this class of buck.

The vernon will make you work harder then the books. There are a ton of roads down low but not many up high (some canyons have roads up the bottom for a ways). The vernon also is generally more open and may require a longer shot.

If you are happy with a 23-26 inch tall 4x4 then the bookies is the place to be. I passed on so many good four points this year I can't even remember them all when I review my video.

The reality is that both are very good units.

Hope this helps some..

I would pick the Books I have hunted both areas there are some great deer in both areas but I would give the books a slight edge.

For the archery hunt I would much rather have the Vernon hunt. My wife had the tag and several friends have had it and they all have done well.

I hunted the Vernon this August...spent a lot of time out there over the summer and hunted for nine days. I ended up killing a decent buck, one that I was happy with...but definitely not the biggest buck I was hunting. There are good deer roaming the Vernon, no question.

No personal experience with the Books.

If you want a 20-22" wide 140-150 B&C 4 point look no further than the Book Cliffs. Vernon has some real high country and bigger top end bucks.

BigM That is a little unfair. If you hunt the Books you can take a 20-22" buck every day, 10 times a day with out getting 30 yards from your truck. Bigger bucks are taken every year. Some are 30+. I'm sure Vernon has great bucks. If given the choice, I will put in for the Books.

I had a MZ tag for the books in 2009 and my dad had a MZ tag for vernon in 2010, we saw one buck bigger than any at the book cliffs on vernon, but other than that go for the books. Way more deer, alot more area to hunt, easier terrain. Personally even with more tags at the books, we were more secluded from people out there. Just get of the roads which is where 90% of the hunters out there hunt.

I like seeing more deer, so I would go with the books. Although, the top end seems to be slightly better on the Vernon.

When faced with the same decision, I chose Vernon. Turned out it was a good choice. Worked hard to find and kill this buck, but that's what makes it fun. Nine days hunting, ten or so scouting. He's 183" gross. 2011 Archery

Just got back from the books hunting the muzzleloader. Killed my buck on the second morning of the hunt. Scored 180-185 was 28.5" wide and 30" with a kicker. And between scouting trips and hunting I saw at least 5 other bucks that were at least as big if not bigger. I hunted Vernon a few times but it's been a long time. But from what I saw, the books are better. Just my two cents.
