BBD! Opening Morning.

Well i took two days off work to take my buddy out on the opening of the muzzy hunt. I got a muzzleloader last year for christmas and decided to give it a shot.

We hiked in 2 hours to get into position before like, and as we were hiking up the ridge we jumped a buck about twenty yards away and he snorted and took off. It wasn't quite light enough to take a shot so we got settled down in some pushes and i pulled out my scope to get a better look. Right away i could tell there was three buck and i picked out the best on a 2x3 and told him which one it was. He steady himself on the packs for a good rest and waited for better light. As it got lighter i realized that there was another deer down below them and to the left i moved my scope and about ##### when i seen the rack.

You know how it is when you see a rack at first your start saying holy ##### it's a big buck even when your not to sure or at least it do. So he started getting buck fever really bad and i'm yelling at him get that buck in your scope and shot whenever you can and that i was on him. It took him for what seemed like forever to get it in the scope. When he finally got a shot the buck was skylined and i told him to put it over his back and shot. 180 yard shot and placed right in the boiler makers. The buck jumped up in my scope turned back are way and come running are way about 30 yards front flipped and died. First shot on the mountain baby! BBD!

No he isn't the biggest on the mountain but we couldn't be any happier he's a trophy to us and an awesome DIY public buck.

Now we got back to the archery hunt. Two of the guys I work with were fortunate enough to draw Bookcliffs archery takes. These guys put in their times more than most people i know. They were down scouting four weekends in a row before the hunt start. They placed trail cams, glass canyon after canyon, continued to see the same bucks and made a hit list of bucks they wanted. The non-typical being one and the "big 4" being another. I was fortune to make it down on two scouting trips and the opening weekend of the hunt.

Opening morning came and we decided to hunt the trail cam canyon and this is what we seen first light.

An hour later and a couple scares i had both of them within the killing zone. One coming from above and the other from the side both of them had what seemed to be a perfect shot as i found out it was thicker than it looked Boddy closed the distance to within 15 yards and Navada was pinned at 30 yards what ended up blowing the stalk was another shooter 4 point was bedded 10 yards from Boddy but i just couldn't keep track of him when he went in the brush. So the other buck busted and they both took off.

For those of you who haven't been a spotter on a hunt like this, it's like watching the hunting channel live. I damn near had a heart attack every stalk i sent them on. I have never seen anyone get as close as these guys had the first three days of hunting. They had some of the best stalks i had every seen in my life and got with in 40-10 yards of almost every deer but never had an ethical shot so they held off.

Tuesday morning came around and they both were feeling a little discouraged due to many blown stalks and a miss or two. We were walking up to the road after a blown stalk and Boddy say "damn it, i just want a good close broad side shot and i know i can hit it" well literally two minutes later i hear something bust twenty yards away from me. So i wave for boddy to come over, we go around a bush and 20 yards aways down hill was a 24 in. 4 point broad side. He shots and misses by an inch over the back. It was steep and he aimed for thirty.

Things weren't working out the way we had hoped in that canyon so we headed east to the canyon were his dad had killed a buck last year. We saw nothing so turned around and head back to camp.
As we were driving back on the wheelers Boddy spotted a buck of the side of the road in the trees. Buck fever set in on everyone. He saw horns, i saw horns, navada saw horns, hell we all got excited. He asked if it was a shooter and i said yes. I ranged it for him 45 yards down hill arc rang. He shots and shots right over the back, well not one second after that i hear another arrow and a crash Navada had smoked the deer in the kill zone and the deer went down in site. We got the buck caped and back up the hill to the wheelers with just a couple more minutes of light to spear.

We headed back to camp and i road on the back of Boddy's wheeler and i notice he doesn't have his release on. I said dude you better put that thing on it's perfect light and they always are up top. Well we got around that bend and 40 yards off the road i spot three bucks feeding in the open. I pulled up my binos and tell him to shot the left buck 40 yards as soon as he was about to shot i realize my dumbass was about to tell him to shot a huge two point and i said don't shot don't shot i meant the right buck 45 yards, i about made the biggest mistake of my life. So he puts his pin on the right "right buck" and releases and me and navada hear a thwack and watch the buck rare up and takes off. So we gave it a half hour and went to were he had shot. And Navada found pulls but it was dark by this time so we backed out.

We headed out to Boddy's buck in morning and couldn't find to much blood. We spit up and searched for the deer, when we hear a "hell ya baby dead deer" from Navada. Me and boddy went running over to him to see his buck piled up. He had made a perfect quartering aways shot and the arrow was poking out the other side.

Two nice bucks in two days and their biggest to date. They both wanted to get a wall hanger and that's what they got.

People don't realize how hard it is being a spotter! I mean i damn near had a heart attack watching all those big bucks and seeing them die.

I also went out on the opener of the Wasatch Elk hunt with my uncle Steve. He did all the scouting and put in his time and closed the deal 1 minute into legal shooting light. I was just fortunate enough to tag along.
