I thought I'd place this story under the mule deer section since it does have to do w/ mule deer . In the general hunting section I have been asking for some help/advise pertaining too getting a fishing license for my 98 yr old grandpa who is one of only a couple people alive today who survived the sinking of the Indianapolis . Back in the mid 50's , my grandpa had taken a trip back East going coming from Oregon to do some business . After his business trip he was driving back to Oregon and was going through some pass on the borders of Idaho and wyoming when suddenly his truck broke down in the middle of a snow storm . After a little bit of work he gave up on trying to fix his truck, it just never wanted to work for him . Long story short , he was stranded there for 9 days, no water . He had survived this incident in sub zero weather by shooting a 38" in giant mule deer through his truck window w/ his 30-30 . A Ranger had found my grandpa there stranded after 9 days . Even back then wildlife officers did not even recognize great mule deer antlers as trophy's .

Cool story, thanks for sharing.
The last buck I shot was 38" also..... from nose to tail! LOL

Thanks, Zeke

My grandpa did not keep the rack or did the wild life officer .... it just amazes me on how many phenomenal deer antlers may have been just thrown aside back in those days .... back in those days it was just a means of survival and living by shooting deer . Most did not look at antlers as a trophy or prized possession as we do now !!!

50 bucks says it was walking with a 2 point and he elected to let the 38 incher save his life!

I wonder if over the years the width of that rack has stretched a little.

(Just having a little fun! No offense intended.)

Crazy story

If what you say were true , I would do the same , shoot the 38 incher over a 2 pointer . LOL . Though I am not in needing to survive at the moment and I sure as hell would be keeping the rack .

Yeah, I think it is crazy how many giant racks were just tossed in the garbage way back in the day. I have heard lots of stories from my dad about some of the monsters that my grandfather shot way back when, and they don't have any of the racks. Im sure if every old timer held on to his antlers back then we would have some pretty crazy world records.

+1 sticknastring3,
my dad was one of those guys that killed some monster muleys and just dumped the racks, he was also one of those fortunate ones to hunt Colorado in the fifty's and sixty's and take some of those impressive bucks...what were these guys thinking? lol

Just like this buck. Probably 25 years ago was sitting in a relatives garbage can on the side of the street. Luckily my mom saved it from its bleak demise and thanks to her hangs in my house.

I think the big racks were a bit more common back then. My dad said his attitude was "I'll just get another one next year".

The old timers appreciated big antlers but they didn't use them like the "golden calf" like we do today.

Oh, the stories my dad would tell of big mule deer bucks.
