Rutting hard

Greetings all... I am a LONG time lurker, but due to school commitments the last few years, I haven't really had any good hunting stories to share. But, I have a great story from last week's muzzie deer hunt.

My dad and I had scouted a little, but Tuesday before the hunt we decided to saddle the horses and go for a ride to have a look around. As hot as it was, we really didn't expect to see many game, but we like to ride and check out the scenery nonetheless.

We decided to take a loop through a few canyons. About half way through, the trail crosses the road. As we neared the trailhead, my horse had lagged behind a little bit. Just at the edge of a stand of pines, my dad stopped. He looked back at me, so I just assumed he was waiting for me to catch up a bit. When I got up close, I could see why he had stopped. I crested the small hill and rounded the bend just in time to see a guy and a girl scrambling to get their clothes on about 30 yards ahead in the trees. They were right in the trail; he was getting his belt buckled, and she was frantically pulling her shirt down over her bra and buttoning her shorts.

It was all I could do to hold the laughter in. Once I caught up, we proceeded down the trail. We didn't really know what to say, so we said nothing. When we got up to them, each was waiting patiently on either side of the trail. The girl asked, "Have you guys seen any moose? We are looking for moose."

We answered no, and just proceeded down the trail. The guy was carrying a pack with a small AR-type gun. Not sure what he was planning on doing with it if he found a moose, but who knows. Oddly enough, I don't think it is a legal moose area anyway, and in the 45 years my dad has hunted that area, he has never seen a moose.

However, two days later, we had been watching a few little bucks and heard a couple grunts and commotion in the brush across the canyon. There were tons of cattle, and lots of bear sign around, so we just assumed it was a cow or bear. But, sure enough, out walks a small bull moose. Interesting turn of events.

All in all, we got some laughs and made some snide comments to each other regarding our inadvertent interruption of some unsuspecting couple's afternoon delight in the woods. Despite the heat, they were rutting hard last week!
