LAST EDITED ON Oct-10-11 AT 08:50PM (MST)[p]In June the draw results came out and my friends and I were excited to see we drew deer tags for our home state of NV. My Dad drew a great bull tag also so most of my time was spent looking for bulls in his area.
We did make 2 scouting trips between the 3 of us and came home each time without seeing a single buck. We were bummed out and went into the hunt with out high expectations.
Opening day we hiked 2 miles into a wilderness area only to have snow, fog and strong winds force us back down the mountian.
My Dad and a friend had to leave for home so I would be hunting by myself for a few days until another friend came to hunt on Friday. Thursday morning I woke up early to clear skies and I was stoked. I drove up to a high basin my wife and I hunted 4 years ago when she had the tag. I spent the first 4 hours behind my binos and spotting scope glassing up every canyon. One canyon was full of elk and they were going crazy. I finally got a good look at the herd bull and he was a dandy 350-360 bull. I continued to glass and started seeing a good number of deer. Most of them were smaller bucks and a one decent 23" 4 point. I was restless from sitting in the same spot for so long so I decide to make my way to a different vantage point. I was almost to the top of the next ridge when I looked down in the bottom and seen the outline a what looked to be a good buck. I put the spotter on him and could see he was narrow but very tall. I decide to pass and just as I was getting one last look he turned his head slightly and I could see his forks and they were deep. My goal on this hunt was to take a buck better than my last and he surely was. I ranged him at 371 yards and settled the crosshairs on his shoulder and he dropped like a rock. Do to the steep down hill angle my shot was a little high so I put one more through his shoulders and he was down for good. I made my way down to him and he actually grew a little which is a good thing
It took about 5 hours to get him broke down and back to the truck but it was worth it. I nicknamed him the bobtail buck because his tail was missing and all he had was a little stump.
My buck is 22" wide and he has 18" G 2's and 13" G 4's. My buddy ended up killed a heavy 27" 4 point 2 days later. He will post pics soon.
