I "got him". Not a monster but a real nice buck. Looks a lot like the robo deer in the KSL article about poaching (little wider, not quite so high but similar shape): 26" wide, fairly high, good mass and eye guards. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd say 7.

Do you hunt for the meat? I enjoy it but a couple of steaks is NOT why I get up early, climb mountains, spend a fortune on "toys" & gas and fantasize all year.

At the shot, it was almost dark. SO, boned him, packed the meat, cut the antlers off and got back to the road (in the dark). THEN DISCOVERED THE ANTLERS HAD FALLEN OFF during the pack out.

I spent ALL DAY yesterday hiking, re-hiking and re-hiking again; cross-country through the sage and buck brush.

Meat is in the freezer and the antlers are on the hill...not even a picture (too dark and no one to snap it)!!

Now that truly is a sad tale. Had that exact thing happen to me on an elk hunt only I was able to find my antlers! What a sad story

Congrats on getting a buck, sorry about the antlers. If you had your gps turned on, you could just back track your trail on it...good luck.

Careful! Heck if you live in UT there's probably a law against loosing the antlers like that. You better leave proof of sex attached to one of your steaks just in case! :)

Idaho has the "evidence of sex naturally attached" rule. I've boned enough to have THAT aspect covered. I did ALL the work. I just screwed up the part where I get to show off to my friends & family.

How sensitive are the new GPS units? Finding the "almost" path was easy...but was I 10 feet or 10 yards to the right or left? WOULD a GPS make it possible to retrace the path within 3 feet?

depends on what type of cover you are hiking in. If there are trees or other obstructions above you the accuracy can suffer. If you are in the open then is can be fairly accurate.

Sad to say but you may never find them. Some critter could have very well took off with them. And by critter I mean the four legged kind. I had a neighbors dog steal a fresh 6x4 rack off my back porch one time. Not very big but I like to keep all my antlers for memory sake.

Grant,
Being the friend that I am I will help you out. Please stop by my office and you can circle the area on the map where you killed the buck and the trail to get there. I will then spend the last 3 days of deer season scouring the hill for your antlers!

In all seriousness that really sucks!

Talked to John C the other day, he said you had found the fish this summer.

Glad to hear you got some meat, sorry about the rack.

Stop by and visit if you get a minute.
