LAST EDITED ON Oct-18-11 AT 09:35PM (MST)[p]My brother Chad has been in a wheel chair since he was the age of 4. He has a disease called distonia that has caused him to be in a wheel chair. Despite this, he has the greatest attitude of anyone I have ever met. Two of his favorite things in life are Sports and Hunting.

We decided to try our luck up in the Raft River Mountains in Northern Utah. I had been there several years ago with a buddy on the general rifle hunt. There was a zoo of people, but because he is disabled, the DWR gives him the opportunity to hunt before the general public.

4:00 AM the alarm sounded, it was game time. We drove 2 1/2 hours north towards Park Valley. When we got to the parking lot it was a cool 32 degrees and windy. A cold front had rolled through the night before and the mountain tops were dusted with snow. We got Chad loaded into the Ranger and we were on our way.

Within the first 20 minutes of day light we had seen about 15 does and a small 2 point funnel up and over the top of the mountain. We crested the top of the mountain and head down the back where all the deer were heading for their beds. 150 yards below the road was a 3 point with 5 does. He was sniffing the does with his head cocked back like he was in the rutt (which we thought was a little strange). We decided to pass on him to see if we could find a bigger deer. We knew we may have made a mistake on passing on him because this area gets a lot of hunting pressure and there are very few deer that get to be larger than a 2 point.

By the time the morning was done we had seen about 40 does and two 2 points. We decided to start a fire and heat some soup up for lunch. Chad decided this was his chance to get a nap in, so he fell asleep for 2 hours. We took a couple shots with the rifle to make sure it was still dialed in and we were on the trail again.

We drove to another area that we hadn't been before that looked like prime deer country. We bumped a group of 5 does out of there bed but no bucks. We went to the top of the canyon and found another 10 does and another 2 point buck. Chad said if we see that three point again I want to shoot him. So we started to head back towards our truck and trailer.

On our way back we were seeing deer everywhere but no decent bucks. We pulled up above the sage brush flat where we had seen the 3 point earlier that morning to find him with the same 5 does. We moved slowly to the edge of the cliff looking down on the sage brush flat and got chad in position. We got the scope zoomed in on the buck. Clicked the saftey off and booooooooom!!! followed shortly with a whack. We knew the buck was hit hard. He ran down the hill and piled up about 70 yards from where he was shot. We all started yelling and giving high fives. We went down the hill and pulled him back up.

We arived home 22 hours after we begin with a buck in the bed and smile on our faces.

There have been several people in the past that have reached out to help Chad like Mike from www.ireviewgear.com, if you haven't checked out this website you need to when you are looking to buy some new hunting gear. They do a great job on breaking down outdoor gear. Mike is one of the most genuine guys I have ever met.

Curtis from Monarch Taxidermy helped Chad out a few years ago with donating a elk mount for him. Curtis is a phenominal taxidermist and even a better guy. If you hunt in Utah you need to need to check him out when you are looking to mount your next animal.

There were several others that offered to help Chad on this hunt like one_dryboot and legacy. It goes to show there are a lot of great people out there that are looking to make a difference.

For all of you that have helped, thank you very much. Chad doesn't take this for granted as hunting it is one of the few things that he gets to enjoy. Chad is already looking forward to next years hunt.

Good luck to all the hunters going into the field this weekend.

Awesome...now if the cougars could play half as good as Chad hunts then everything would be good.
You guys are animals. I feel fortunate to know you.
Great job Chad. I am proud of you. I wish I was half the man you are.
You are a good brother Ky.

Best story of the year. What an awesome accomplishment. Chad sounds like a great guy from what my dad has told me. What a stud.

Wow! Awesome story! Just when I start getting antsy about finding a big buck u help me to remember to enjoy the family and friends while being grateful that I can get out and hunt. Great buck.

From one former Viewmont Viking to another - GREAT BUCK CHAD!

I remember your brother from Viewmont. Good to see he is still out doing what he loves all these years later.

Great story, great outcome - THANK YOU for sharing.

Awesome buck and hunt. Congrats to both of you and thanks for sharing the adventure with all of us. Glad to see there are still people in this world that care about others and are willing to help anytime.

Great story....made me feel real good. You should be proud of that buck, and to your brother Chad and all the people that help you out, AWESOME JOB !!! Its nice to see that people care about others in need of some help. If I was invited along, I would be first in line !!

Next time your trying to be slick....Try
being slicker than a 6 year old.

The hunt is something that just happens to be going on while you are out in nature spending time with the ones that mean the most to you. Great story......next time I'm feeling tired and sore and cold I'll remember just how blessed I am. Great job Chad....you're an inspiration to us all.

Thank you all for your nice comments. Chad is still grinning ear to ear. www.deadeyeoutfitters.com has offered to send him a T Shirt of his choice off of their website. They have some really good looking stuff on their site.
We had a nice guy that let us use his brand new Polaris Ranger for this trip, and it worked out really well for Chad because he can't sit on a ATV very well.

This was one of those opportunities that makes you feel really blessed to be able to help someone else out. If any of you would like to go out with us in the next couple of years, please let me know.

I am going to try to start saving some money to take him on a guided hunt in the next few years were he would have a chance at a really nice buck to hang in his room. I'd like to see if we could get it filmed and maybe put on Roughing It Outdoors or one of the hunting shows. If any of you have any of you have any outfitters that you would reccommend, let me know.

Life's a little better for all who read about your great adventure.
Congrats of a great deer! That's a worthy accomplishment.

What a great brother you are to him. It is inspiring to read about you two. Nicely done.....

If only I had resources and connections to hook you guys up with! These pictures are w/ question the best I have ever seen on this site. I cant wait to share this with friends and family!

That is one great hunting story that epitomizes what hunting should be about. I'd much rather read about that than about some fat rich guy that paid a zillion dollars to go "hunt" for the biggest animal in the state.

You guys are inspirational - good job men!

Congrats to you both on a great buck and a nice story behind it....

Very inspirational story. Thank you both for the reality check.

It ought to keep some of the snivelers and whiners around here, in the background for a few days.........

I keep on thinking about this story and believe it is one of the best (if not the best), stories written this year on MM.

With all the bickering about "Game Management", and other things on here, this story brings out what a true hunt should be about. Go out, spend some time with family, and truly enjoy a hunt.

As Nick said, its a great "reality check". I killed my biggest buck this year on a LE deer hunt and had a good time. However, my kids didn't make the hunt. I took all my kids on the Utah General this weekend and didn't see a buck...nothing but hunters. I believe this hunt was as much, or more worthwhile than my LE hunt..

Sometimes its really good to take a few minutes and realize what this sport is really about!!!

Truley an outstanding and heart touching story!!!!!! Chad you are the man sir wtg on a fine buck!!!!

The more people read this the better!!! Still my #1 vote for Story of the year on here...

I missed this post somehow...

Awesome hunt and story, Congrats to both of you!
