Antelope Island

no word yet.... i wish the fg would move a few of them bucks around the state and spread out them great genetics.... or even catch em and pull cemen from them and then catch some does around and inpregnate them with the seeds of those huge deer on the island. but we all know utah will just sell them to the highest bidders...

LAST EDITED ON Oct-24-11 AT 03:53PM (MST)[p]If you ask me, which you didn't but i'm gonna lend my opinion anyway.....I don't think that Island has that great of genetics. The deer have been free to grow old out there and that is the main reason you have 200 inch bucks roaming around. Make Logan canyon or the Wellsville mountains off limits to hunting for 10 years or even 5 and see what happens. Heck do that to any unit in the state and see what happens!

look at the sheds that come of every yr.... not great gens??? none typical gens. but i agree with close the whole damn state for 5 yrs at least. im a lifetime license holder in utah. get a tag every yr with no draw crap. i have burned about the last 15 or so with out even going deer hunting... so i think im doing my part. i save 1 2 point per yr. if i give the tag back mr dwr sells it off again and a 2 point dies.

Look at the sheds that come off about anywhere that is a retirement home for mule deer. ATK, Town bucks, the Zoo..........etc

No doubt that the bucks there are given the chance to put a few years behind them, but the genes are there as well. Lots of 190 inch 3 year old bucks that blossom at 4.

But I agree that being closed would help a lot of areas.

I would so love to see logan canyon and the wellsville go to LE..they could still issue a lot of tags, but cut the hunters down some..those area's could produce some giants.

At least bring back the LE high country hunt, that used to be a great hunt.

I agree, Utah needs to be more creative with LE hunts. I was thinking it would be cool if they did a general statewide hunt for cap and ball muzzys only in November. Think of creative ways to offer good hunts and move people through the point system. Every other state does it but us!

Does anyone know if they will have the island closed to the public during the hunt or not

The Island will not be closed. One reason the hunt is in Nov. is because visitation is low during Nov. Another requirement is that the successful hunters must cover the deer when taking them from the Island.

It won't help to just close the state you would also have to do something with all the predators also that is your #1 reason we have no deer not cause of the hunters it is the hunter that is hunting 365 days a year that is really hurting us.

Than why is it the island riddled with more coyotes and bobcats per square mile than any where else in the state and yet still bosts probably the highest concentration of big bucks over 200'' per square mile in the state?. Also lion numbers are extremely low in general across the state. in my opinion there are to many guys shooting 2 and 3 year old deer than complain theres no more big bucks around well I cant imagin why. Cut the tags and close some units and watch.

I'm talking about the whole rest of the state. The lion numbers are down wow I don't know where u hunt but the southern, central, and south east are crawling with lions everywhere there is a deer there is a lion track. Yes let's close the unit's and give the predators free rain that will work. (Let's see)

I agree we need to control predators as well as reduce the number of small bucks being killed in order to have big bucks. If you hunt for meat great buy a depredation cow elk tag.
