I must attract the goofy bucks. I was a little disappointed when I walked up to him, but he is growing on me. I shot him last night just before dark. I spotted him running through the burned trees. I knew he was a big mature buck and had something funny about his one side. He gave me walking 300 yard shot through a small opening right at edge of the burn. 165gr Accubond at 3500 fps did a number on his chest cavity.

Wow! He is goofy but pretty cool. Not many bucks are so unique, good job.

Really cool buck nevertheless!!!! And on a side note.....looks like somebody really did a number on the cedar tree in the background!!!!

Nothin like a 30" 4x1 cool buck chad, and what are you shootin that a 165 accubond is going 3500 fps thats cookin?

That's exactly why I love mule deer. You never know what they look like. I like your buck. You'll look at a thousand mule deer and never see another like it. Not a 30" typical but a great buck all the same.

That is bad A! That buck looks like he shoulda been hanging aroud Kenicott! There is a couple of big spike weirdos out there

Big Moosie you are correct on the gun. 300 RUM. I just starting reloading and playing with a few loads. I actually had the 165gr bullets approaching 3800fps. I had to back them off to match the speed my turret is set up for. That speed may be a little to fast for the Accubond. It pretty well blew apart without hitting any bones other than ribs. 4 inch wound channel, with only small part of bullet going clear through.

Love that Goofy Buck, that will be a conversation piece on your wall.

That looks like a Book Cliffs buck and country.

We have one like that although not as wide on one of the ranches I hunt. We're going to take him out this year. They are starting to rut he is a really agressive deer as I have observed bow hunting. He is the king with that one side his right long and sharp, he wins every sparring match even if the other buck is bigger. I wish the one we'll take out was as wide as that. Yours and the one I have both appear to have long noses. I wonder if that is related to the spike on one side.

Very cool Brag a bit. Didn't you post a pic of a 6x1 bull elk a while back? My brother took a 4x1 on a muzzy hunt. No where near as big as yours but it's a cool conversation buck. I boiled the skull for him and did a diorama. Here it is.

What are you doing to get 3800 fps out of a stock 300 rum ? I shoot a modifed 300 rum (300 tejas) and we have back it off to 3600 fps with a 165 grain bullet

Big John,
I am kind of shocked myself. I have a custom rifle with a 27 inch lapped barrel 1 in 11 twist. I loaded 3 shells with 100gr of Retumbo, Federal Match primers. Average 3 shots was 3780. I had 3 shells loaded with 101, 102, 103 grains each. I shot 1 of the 101 at 3808. It showed some signs of pressure so I just pulled the rest of the loaded rounds. The hodgden manual shows 103.5 as max. I had to back it off to 93.2gr to get it down to 3500 to match my turret. I verified this speed through two chronographs.

You must be using RL 25 ? I have been loading RL 22 96 grains w/ a 165 grain bullet getting 3540 fps at temp above 40. If it drops bellow forty I load 97 grains. My gun has a 26 inch barrel not including the muzzle break of course. But your gun does smoke them out there. The maxs load on a 300 rum 165 grain bullet in the Barnes manual shows RL 22 91.5 and RL25 94.5. But it does show RL 25 w/ 130 grain bullet at 104.5 grain pushing 3722 fps

I personally really like those "Freaks & Geeks" and your buck is one I'd drop in a second...Good job!

bragabit,
I heard about another buck with a spike on one side and a good bit of antler on the other that was seen in Southern Utah this fall. Wondered if your buck came out of So. Utah too, if you're comfortable with sharing. If not, that's okay too.
