Sacrifice Buck

This hunt was a blast, and had a very gut wrenching outcome. We had spotted a buck friday mornig that I decided to go after. Sat morning came and we were heading to the canyon he was in, to hike and sit on some water he was going to. We were about a half mile from where we were going to hike from and we saw some does, continued around the corner and there he was, 25yrds of the road looking at me. After looking him over for some time and watching him walk to about a hundred yards away, me and my 10 year old son decided he was worthy. We got back to 80yrds away and I had to glass him again, guessing the size would be 24-25 wide maybe 20 tall, a good buck I thought. Just as I decided to take him I pulled my rifle off my shoulder and loaded it, went to aim and they bolted. After working our way a mile down the ridges and draws, I jumped them again, seeing a deer going through the trees and stopped at a hundred, I could see it was him, but no good shot. He worked his way over the ridge and we went running, got to the other ridge and nothing. Slowly we made our way through the thick cedars and heard him take off again. thinking he would run through the sagebrush opening, we ran straight to the opening and looked, 200 yrds out we saw the deer or so we thought, he was moving into the trees and was tall and big through the backs. Right as his head went in the trees I took a quarting away shot. We went quickly over to where we shot at him, and nothing, no blood anywhere.
My father in-law got up to where I was and said it looked like I didn't hit him, I said how did you see him from where you were, he said he ran past me at 25 yrds and was bounding like he wasn't hurt. Not thinking anything of it I said we need to search the area for blood or sign. Me and my son went down one ridge and my brother went down the bottom. A half hour of looking and we came over the ridgetop and looked and saw a buck, it started to walk and I new it was hurt, I had hit him so I put him Down this time right through the lungs, down instantly.
As I am waking toward him I put the binos up and say hes a three point, keeping the choice words inside, because of my 10 year old. I kept composure and finished getting to him.
I had shot the wrong deer, the big one had met up with another buck and in my opinion sacrificed his buddy to save himself. AKA"THE SACRIFICE BUCK" all in all after my emotions were back in check I grabbed my son and said we got him and we were way excited because he saw the whole hunt and hiked with me no problems. It is still my biggest buck to date and am very happy with him. will make a great european mount.
Thanks for this forum, it gives me a place to share a passion for hunting. And to get ideas for bringing my kids up in the sport. Nothing better!!!

That a heck of a three point though. You still did great. Nice mass on him. Good job!

I love big three points. You didn't happen to bring that buck through heber city yesterday did you? I saw a real similar big 3 in the back of a truck headed east. Usually all the big bucks are in trucks headed the other way (west) back from Colorado and the book cliffs. Anyways, congrats.

A really nice tall heavy deer your son will always remember it. To me it would be as good as a 200+ deer, because your son was involved. The memories you created for him will keep him close to you. My son 32 Saturday will be transfering from Berkley to Denver simply to get back into hunting with me. Memories of youth hunts that took a while to be important but ultimately are very important. Nice Job!

Thats the best that your boy could be with you. Much better than shooting the bigger buck with him not there .

Nice buck . I am cunfused though. Did you actually hit the 1st buck and shot this one by accident when you through the scope up?

prism:no this is a book cliffs buck, got him in wood canyon. If anyone is looking for a nice buck that 4X5 was stall there saturday night. about 3 miles from seep ridge road, and south of the road 1/2 mile.

old moss back: When i shot my buck the bigger one ran out past my father in-law, that is why I call it the sacrifice buck, because the bigger one convinced him to run out as a decoy. HaHaHa!!!

I agree guys, as a parent who could ask for more than a child growing up and deciding hunting with dad for a lifetime is awsome!!!

Well done!

My son shot a much smaller buck this year, than he would have otherwise, since his 5 year old daughter was with him.

The kids need to see some success and they care nothing about the size or score.

Again, well done on a great hunt. Congrats

Zeke
