For a last minute deer hunt for this year I picked up two Colorado 41,42,421 3rd season Landowner Tags/Voucher, last night.

A little internet research last night looks like these units are managed for a lot of hunters and have a lot of deer. That is if a 56% +/- hunter harvest ratio means that 56 out of 100 hunters killed a buck.

I've seen other requests here on the MM forum for information on 41,42,421 which I would appreciate too. Any general information would be most helpful and just by chance if you know of any land owners that have more deer than they want and are inclined to allow hunters access, that would also be worthwhile. I recognize that finding landowners that are asking for hunters is rare now days but I does happen on occasion and if you don't inquire you never know.

My son and I will be hunting, a 13 year old grandson and his mother will be along for the fun but will not be hunting.

We've killed a lot of deer over the years and will be quite selective even thought it might mean coming home with nothing more than good memories of a "Colorado Deer Hunt" to look back on.

Also, any recommendations for a nice clean motel in the area would also be helpful along with your recommendations for a good restaurant as well.

Thanks in advance. Looking forward to seeing the country.

I had that tag last year. What town you going into? Or what unit you going to start in? I was mostly hunting on landowner property. But maybe I can help with some info. I'll check back tomorrow see if you have respond

Had the tag last year. Let me know which way your going see if I can help

Thanks Muley_legend. Actually, we don't have a town or area picked out yet so we are about as flexible as it gets. I figured we'd get some direction, if we could, before we settled on an area. We will try to book a motel where ever we decide go, if everything isn't already sold out. Driving a hour or so from a motel to a hunting area is not unreasonable, closer would be better but we won't let a longer drive keep us from hunting a better area. We could bring a travel trailer to stay in but we'll only going that route if we can't find a room somewhere. We've done the tent thing many times but with moms and youngsters coming along we're thinking the tent camp might not float their boat this time of year.

Thank you for what ever you might suggest.

my brother and i hunted it in 2008. it was a fun hunt and we could have killed some small bucks if we wanted. we did find a pair of good bucks but in our limited hunting time we could not get it together on either of them. they were a good four point about 165-170 and an awesome big 3 that was real wide. we went out of silt if i remember right, camped about 5 miles out of town and saw the best bucks on the border of private and public land. sorry i cant be of more help but i really dont remember the details. ill get ahold of my brother and see if he has our maps. it was fun and we are planning a return trip. i remember it being cold cold cold and vowing to never camp in the horse trailer again

LAST EDITED ON Nov-02-11 AT 00:50AM (MST)[p]Thanks desertdeer. Thats kind of what I'm hoping we can get to as well, a fun hunt and an opportunity at an older class of buck some where during the hunt.

I've already done the horse trailer camp deal, won't make that mistake in the fall/winter again. A tent, with a bail of straw and a foam pad works better than an uninsulated trainer, IMO. Not much meaner than a breezy bed in November. We'll go a little easier on our bones for this one.

If you locate your maps and can give me the name of the road, that would be very helpful, if not, we'll just start out throwing darts and try to get better as she goes.

I appreciate your help.

When we went we hunted in the town colbran, like I say we hunted the landowner property 90% of the time, with how weird the weather was last year it's was a harder hunt. We got snow early on in the hunt and by the last day we was seeing three times the deer and the bucks were getting better. With the two tags we had we both got 165 bucks nothing huge but one of the funest hunts. I'll look for my maps see if i can relocate which road we was on

Hunted 41 and 421 a few times for deer. Not what it was a few years ago. You will see 150 to 160 inch bucks on the private. The high country deer are not there like they used to be. You should see deer.... Just not good ones. If thats what you want it is a good hunt. Private land is the key.

A huge bear would work too. Never killed a bear but I'd do my part to preserve a few deer and elk. Where'd you hunt coyote?

Thanks

i talked to my bro today. he wasnt near the maps but he told me we hunted on the garfield management unit. i believe it is southeast of silt. hope this helps. i remember we hunted the west side of the road north of a ranch that allows access to hunters. we climbed a hill we named mt. sonofabitch and the private land boundary was at the top of that hill. sorry i cant help more. my brain has been filled lately with chemistry equations and it seems i am losing vital information daily.

Thanks desertdeer. We had a fun hunt yesterday and this morning. Lots of rain, snow and mud. Saw a good number of yearling deer, one nice buck but figured we'd let him go and see what might show up next weekend as the rut gets more fired up. Some bucks were rutting most didn't seem to be.

Hope everything hasn't move on to the private property by next weekend.

I thought I knew what thick scrub oak looked like, I've never seen oak like the White River Forest area, great cover for deer.

mt sonofabitch is right. I hate that climb

Had a good time learning the area on Sat. and Sun. Wet and muddy..........wahoo! Deer were generally hunkered down waiting on some sun-shine which didn't come to any degree. Found a few deer, good percentage were bucks, about 30/40% but mostly yearlings, as expected from the pre hunt info. we got.

Passed on a couple of better bucks, one may have been 27" +/- but not really long tines/heavy horn so he got to walk.

We're headed back on Weds afternoon to hunt Thursday thru the end of the season. Hopefully we'll find a few older bucks beginning to rut as the week ends.

Of course the bulk of the deer are stacking up on private property but we knew that would be the case going in as well so we're just enjoying seeing them even though we can't kill any of them.

All in all, we had a fun weekend and are looking forward to heading back over to celebrate another four days of our amazing outdoor lifestyle. Long live mule deer and mule deer hunting!!

Thanks for checking in LB, JC and Bean, we'll keep you posted. Bean that was a good looking buck you got, congratulations and you've most likely sparked a new hunter and hunting companion in your nephew. LB, thanks for the picture of your buck. Good for you, a true management buck and a good looker at the same time. Great use of the tag and the intent of the tag. Your little bride is still throwing you curve balls, good for her.
