Rattling ruttin' muleys?

I posted the following in the CO forum. Please respond if you have ideas about the following:
Heading out for 4th season next week for muleys. I hunt in an area that does not allow rifle hunters but does allow archery in various parts of the unit so my questions are, what is going on with the rut, and have any of you rattled in muleys before? Let's expand this a little further, what about decoys and using scents for muleys during the rut--remember I will be bow hunting in an area that no rifle hunters can legally hunt. I will have my rifle along for other parts that are open to rifle.
Thanks!

I have tried rattling, mule deer doe scent and decoys during the rut in Utah with very little success. We have called in a few smaller bucks but most of the time it simply scares the larger bucks away--particulary if they are already tending a group of does.

I have never rattled but I will say if you use sent be patient. I've used sent before. Once I set up waited then started walking crossed paths unexpectedly with a buck headed for my setup. I back tracked his tracks and he had been pacing a ridge looking for does. I tracked him for a while then set up with some sent again. Once again I got impatient and started off. Came back through my second set up on the way out a short time later and found a big set of buck tracks on top of my boot tracks. I think if you can find a roaming buck with no doe sent and decoys should be a good tool. Not a guarantee but a tool. Had no results plenty of times also. Good luck. Post if you have success

Thank you sir for the response. I'll give a shot on a few set ups and see if these old CO deer are any different than their cousins over in Utah...

I called in the biggest muley I've taken with a combination of a muley deer talk and a grunt tube. My call sequence started with a fawn distress call followed by a couple short doe bleets then fineshed with several deep grunts. This buck first stood up about 400 yard away and came running in to about 18 yards.
I also have tried rattling bucks and had success rattling with thinner sheds.I only had success rattling in an area that had allot of younger bucks and does but again I was also calling at the same time.

I was wondering about calling too. I'll be dropping some cash to get a grunt tube, and some scents this weekend in anticipation of next week. Thanks for the info and I'll give it a try.

I was surprised that muley bucks responded to a grunt tube myself but, now I dont leave home with out it. As for scents, I would only use them as a drag that coveres a a small area. The best scent i've used is urine i've collected from prior bucks and their scent glands. Now that you KILL YOUR GIANT this year freeze the urine in Mason jars and do your best to preserve the glands as well. Sounds gross but, ITS FREE and it does not confuse your prey with scents from too many other sources.

Tink's 69 works great on muleys, especially in funnels they are bird dogging in.
